  1. Yup, sorry
  2. The 'official' Timeline is here: https://coppermind.net/wiki/Cosmere#Chronological_Order There are more elaborate versions out there that try to plot out major/ancient events as well, but this one will line up the book events.
  3. We have the math on a lot of it. Rosharan years are 1.1 earth years, for example, so everyone is a little older by our scale than the numbers they cite in the text. Im pretty sure we have the math for Scadrial too but I cant seem to find it right now. We have the stats on Sel's overall size and gravity, but as far as I know nothing about it's wider solar system or its relative Year length. EDIT: I take it back. This says in most cases there's not significant time dilation between worlds because the Spritual realm sort of standardizes it. Buuut, there will be if there is a lot of Investiture in the Cognitive and/or Physical Realms. Like the Dor, so Sel is going to be weird...
  4. Found this (really old) WOB that implies it will affect people and object inside the bubble only, and in qualitatively different ways that how physics and logic would treat such a boundary where the side does not matter. But it's also before he just handwaved away the redshift issue, so it's preliminary in that sense.
  5. No, the amount of power in a Shard far exceeds how much can be physically crammed into mundane metal of practical size. And while compounders can get Savant warped from over-use, Allomancy doesnt actually let the person hold a lot of Investiture at once; they are limited to what they can do with Flaring and Duralumin. They are a firehose but not necessarily a water tower. And they couldnt fit a whole Shard in a metalmind to be able to flush it out all at once. The closest possibility that I see is that the God-king Breath horde could someday (millennia down the line) become so big it collapses in on itself and becomes a Sliver-Mantle. But even then it would provide a Connection to pick up an unattended shard but it would probably still need to keep growing a huge amount before you could wrestle control of the full shard from the current Endowment.
  6. I really enjoyed the novels once upon a time. I was disappointed in the movie adaptation and so never picked up the TV show. But if they ever make it to the Amber Spyglass content (Book 3 for those that arent familiar) I will 100% be there. How far into the story has the HBO series gotten? Because there are some pretty big spoilers that came in Book 2 and even more in Book 3 if they are pacing the seasons to books. I dont want to assume something is known only to ruin it for you.
  7. I'm not entirely sure that's true since WOB also calls elsecalling a process of making a mini perpendicularaity, and (so far at least) it seems to just pierce that boundary between the Physical and Cognitive. A science aware lightweaver can create high energy lasers, microwave radiation, etc. A Cosmere aware one can directly manipulate Investiture and convert one type to another. Dalinar is not Unchained, the Stormfather does that. The Stormfather merged with Honors Ghost which changed him and per WoB is giving Dalinar potential and abilities that the Stormfather and other godspren couldn't previously grant.
  8. I dont think this Mercy is going to be that benevolent at all, from what little we know of their actions. I think Mercy is the Anti-Honor. Were (per this WOB) Honor is about being Bound by the fabricated rules of people and Society, Mercy is all about disregarding those same rules. And just like Honor can become pretty awful if it isnt restrained by empathy, Mercy is supposed to be a rare exception to the norm for benevolent and/or Greater Good purposes, but can very easily slip into "Watch the World Burn" Agent of Chaos territory when done purely for it's own sake.
  9. Devil's Advocate question because I cant actually remember, and because we know Light at least is bend to narrative. Has there been an instance of somebody from outside the sphere observing the happenings inside? In most cases it's a flicker change and it's done or else it goes unobserved entirely. Has maybe somebody with superspeed* been able to see into a sphere? (*but for the sake of science not using All Powers subconsciously with the Bands, which broke all kinds of rules) Per THIS WOB, whenever magics (and speed bubbles specifically) break physics, the answer will be that it spills over into Spiritual Realm Wonkiness. By that, using Time Bubbles in conjunction with particle acceleration to Break the Light Barrier will pop the border into the Spiritual Realm and balance the system with the Realm of Infinite Stuff. As for in-world Arcanist theories, I have a couple different ideas, but Ill need your help to figure out which fits the evidence better because it's been a while since I've read through mistborn. Also allowing that this hypothetical is taking about a lot of energy so it might be playing in the Possible But Not Practical stuff he's always lamenting in WOBs. So: Elsecalling Theory: The imbalanced equation Spills into the Spiritual Realm, which sounds a little like a mechanically created perpendicularity. So I suspect it could resemble Realmic Elscalling and allow for some rudimentary Oathgate travel (probably without any built-in navigation method). The Flash does it all the time... Shared Cognitive Theory: Because all sentient beings are Connected at a cognitive level and their Perceptions get blended to make the local Cognitive Realm which is itself a foundation of the Physical Realm, it's literally not possible for the Inside Observer to Perceive any difference in the Speed of Light. At a Reality's "Objective" Perception level it is held constant, and the Bubble boundary Investiture buffers the difference as it crosses. I think instead of getting a compressed analog signal (that would result in red-rust) it's more of a weird cosmic Framerate stat analogous to how Age is an Objective "Connection" to the Spiritual making it independent of Health. Investiture Resistance Theory: Speed Bubble's exclude Light from their effects because Light (and Color) innately carry more Investiture in the Cosmere, through mechanism that are being hinted at but unexplained. Which means it's a practical issue that advanced Realmic Science (and the color-draining ability of Awakening) can probably overcome by the time railguns and FTL's wouldnt be narrative-breaking.
  10. I think you wildly underestimate how much the Spren's own personality and the restriction of those Ideals themselves are restraining the use of the Surges. It's not about Stormlight efficiency, or the perks of Plate and Squires, it's the fact that the full power of the Surges can be bought, sold, and stolen by anyone of any personality type, competance level, or conviction to any Ideal at all. Imagine the most sinister person you can think of in the cosmere, now give them all the powers and potential world-ending dangers of a Bondsmith. Now imagine the most stupid and reckless person in the cosmere, and given them the same thing. Ditto with Ash's Sword, since the potential of Lightweaving with an understanding of Radiation was stupid even before we knew Lightweaving could mean direct Investiture-manipulation, and we all know how broken Soulcasting can probably become in sci-fi hands.
  11. It did start that way, but Im trying to figure out a mechanical work-around for the 1:1 nature of spanreeds so they can get boradcast capability (as well as a more automated network of them).
  12. I think you are asking the right questions. Is this conceptually similar to the Alcubierre drive (See Below)? FTL Clues: "It involves where the lost energy from thermodynamic issues goes in certain Allomantic interactions" We should ""Watch for what happens when something leaves a bendalloy bubble." "There's an issue with conservation of momentum with speed bubbles." Adding a Nicroburst to the two Bubble types is getting closer but still missing pieces "It involves Allomantic [and/or Ferucehmical?] abilities which we don't know about" as of 2014, so after Alloy of Law but before Shadows of Self. The Narrative Out is that any time it would break Physics too bad he'll point at the Spiritual Realm for an explanation
  13. Right, I think that's what WOB #3 is saying. It's going to come down to Realmic Cognitive Perception Shenanigans, since the observation of Light (the redshift) is the main thing that he's specifically handwaving away from logic You lost me, how would matter be accelerated to superluminal speeds?
  14. Ooh, gotcha, sorry. WOB #2 above says for both bullets and Light they're calling it a thermodynamic process at the boundary that bleeds energy out to explain why there's no problematic radiation or object acceleration when things leave the boundary (and I think is why there's a shimmer but no actual Doppler shift). WOB #4 elaborates that the problems were interconnected, were consider from both the inside-out and outside-in perspective, and ultimately handwaved to say the boundary bleeds out any problematic kinetic energy but chaotically enough that Wayne cant just sniper from inside his bubble. EDIT: Also, I think they are mostly discarding the real wave behavior and just calling it the Light-as-a-Particle side to say it behaves the same for visible light and thrown/flying objects.
  15. That could probably work. If it's all about not letting the half-spren escape so doing the whole experiment inside a vacuum chamber to cut off escape (and/or maybe even just an aluminum box?). As a side note, Im honestly curious about the future of spanreed tech moving forward since the whole Spren-splitting process seems to be one of the more objectionable practices to the Sibling. But they also say more than once that flamespren dont seem to mind so maybe all it will take is more specific spren restrictions (and spren consent).
  16. You are going to have to disconnect your logical chain here, the 'No Doppler Shift' rule for speed bubbles was a "handwavium" solution to avoid narrative issues and is specifically where he chose to deviate from what logic and science would dictate. I think there probably some reasonable realmic Internal/External theories we could spin like we've been doing forever with storing "weight", but in this case I'd be backing into a justification.
  17. Nice! And thanks for the passage. So I was remembering correctly that you have to split the initial spren/Gem in equal halves but can relocated a half to make the amplifier. The only practical downside is that (for now) it requires the shunting capability of Raysium to recapture and relocate the half-spren.
  18. Does that hold true with Spanreed Gems that are Cut in half after the spren is trapped? It would mean cutting the spren into unequal parts and I dont know if that would still work.
  19. Conventional* by specific Doylistic Choice. Otherwise they'd cause unanticipated radiation, OP railgun coinshots, etc. : *They're going with a turbulent energy transfer at the border to explain it, ditto with bullets being deflected and whatnot.
  20. Yup, that should do it, Cool idea! A Spanreed can essentially become an infinite string in the old two-cup child's "radio", all you need is a functional drum and resonator chamber/cone at each end. Depending on how sensitive the spanreeds can be to vibration-scale motion, you may or may not need to tweak the the mechanical bits you describe to act as an amplifier, but it sounds like it would do the trick if I'm picturing it right. Metal parts might cause some unintended fabrial interference, so organic materials might be better. Now here's where it get's fun: you should be able to then make a purely mechanical "switchboard" that would let you physically couple spanreeds together, and thus bridge one (or more) spanreeds lines to a shared voice chat. If they're lucky and/or clever with some dampers and whatnot it might work with an open line for everyone and a common sound chamber in the middle (probably with some echo problems at least), otherwise they might need a more complex system for each participant to switch from Receive Mode to Transmit mode like with your average handheld radio.
  21. I agree, but as you say it Im trying ot figure out if there is much of a practical difference between that and what Cultivation's been up to. In both cases they are empowering others for their own Goals, as they see it in the Spiritual Relam Infinity.
  22. I love this! I dont know why I need this, but can you make a Darkeyed (and maybe Branded) version?
  23. Odium cannot, specifically, and all evidence suggests that's due to whatever was done to trap him in the Rosharan System. It's very likely that all three were similarly bound against directly harming the mortals.
  24. As a follow-up, I dont think its possible overall, because I dont think the Self Image is supposed to be that mutable; Radiant Healing can change Gender in specific people but that is a far cry from giving Radiants a Gender Switch at will. That being said, if it's possible at all, I think an Elsecaller, specifically a Singer Elsecaller, would have the best shot. Singer's have a different psychology relating to their physical bodies thanks to the Forms, so they might be a little more cognitively fluid overall. Separately, Elsecallers are called out as being like Skybreakers and Lightweavers in that they are extremely personal and varied with their Oaths, only theirs is focused exploring and developing their own personal Potential, which thematically allows for more growth and Change than Truths that act as more of a personal Identity Anchor.
  25. I dont think so, especially in the face of Truths. Even with her extreme fracturing of Self Shallan still needed to exert Lightweaving to change hair colors, rather than the Stormlight healing taking that over. Also at a more fundamental Level, Lightweavers grow in power though Introspection and an Understanding of Who They Are, which I think is there to balance their tendency for Illusion and wouldnt be compatible with that sort disposable revisions of Self.
