  1. Previously, on What Happened in the Dalles: Planeshift (personal spacial dilation), Current Event (water current manipulation), and Memori (memory suppression) came to the Dalles by river, but Current Event was wounded and they now must steal a car. Memori gave them selective amnesia because she is afraid of the telepath Reader. "Hows it going in there, Planeshift?" asked Current Event through the broken window of the car they were trying to hotwire. "Not so well," replied Planeshift, exasperated. He was sitting upside-down in the driver's seat with his head under the steering wheel. He had three wires in each hand. Three! Where did they come from? "I was hoping that I had muscle memory of how to hotwire a car, but apparently I've never done this before." Planeshift touched two wires together and was rewarded with the blaring car alarm. WOOP! WOOP! WOOP! bweeeEEEEP! bweeeEEEEP! BEEDOO! BEEDOO! BEEDOO! "Sparkamity!" yelled Memori. "This isn't going to work. Let's get the heck out of here before we attract any attention. We'll go with Plan B." Planeshift had come up with a few backup plans while they had walked into the Dalles from the river. It seemed prudent to have contingencies when walking blind into what might be the strangest city in northwest Oregon. "Look out," called Current Event, "We're about to be attacked by flying pigs!" Planeshift clambered out of the window of the noisy vehicle. Sure enough, two pigs were diving straight down toward the fugitive epics. Somehow, they even managed to look dangerous despite their pink pudginess. Planeshift reached up toward them and the world changed. It compressed around him until the pigs were within reach. He grabbed a leg of a different pig in each hand, then let the world change back. As the world stretched out again, his feet were lifted off the ground until he was high in the air, hanging from the pigs. To another's eyes, he would have appeared to stretch upward, grab the pigs, then return to a regular size. The pigs struggled, but Planeshift didn't let go. They fell toward the ground together. Before they hit, Planeshift rapidly stretched horizontally. The world shrunk toward him and he held his arms outright. His hands with the pigs in them smashed through the walls of the buildings on the two sides of the street, and the pigs fell limp. Planeshift held that position for a moment and caught his breath. His hands were still stuck through the walls. He was only a few feet off the ground. His hands hurt, his knuckles skinned, but his bones should be splintered. Maybe they were unbreakable. Planeshift dropped the dead pigs and returned to normal size, dropping to the ground in the middle of the street. Current Event stared in awe. "I don't care if you can't hotwire a car. I'm keeping you." *** The fugitive epics were ready to put Plan B into motion. There was some kind of patrol or supply line, because military vans drove down this street every ten minutes. The last one had come nine minutes ago. Memori and Current Event stepped into the street. Like clockwork, a van drove up on the tenth minute, but this time it had to slow to a stop to avoid hitting the two disheveled Epics. The soldier in the van rolled down the window and pointed a megaphone at the epics. "Citizens! Please clear the road!" "Please help my friend," said Memori, "He's been injured." Planeshift sneaked up behind the van and started to crawl under it. He hurried because the soldier seemed to have a short temper. "Clear the road or I will be forced to run you over. Don't you know the Dalles is at war? Get out of the way, now!" Before the van started driving, Planeshift laid flat on the asphalt, then stretched until his back was pressed against the bottom of the van. Then he slowly stretched just a little bit more, so the wheels were lifted slightly off the ground. When the driver hit the gas, the wheels spun freely. It was only a moment until the aggressive soldier got out of the van to try and figure out what was going on. Now it was up to Memori. "Soldier!" yelled Memori, "What are you doing?" "Um, well," stammered the soldier. "Spit it out." said Memori. "I don't remember." "Oh dear. This is worse than I thought." she said. The soldier looked very confused. "Jonah," Memori said, choosing a random name. It's not like the soldier would know the difference. "You were saving a family of five from a collapsing home when a beam hit you in the head. It seems to have given you a serious concussion. Do you remember driving here, to the medical ward?" "No," he said. She sighed. "You'd better get in there right away, captain. It's that one," and she pointed at one of the buildings. The soldier hurried toward it. The three epics quickly piled into the van. Memori had made sure to make 'Jonah' forget that he left his keys in the ignition. They started driving toward the east end of the city. "Family of five?" asked Current Event from the back seat. "Yeah, the disapproving thing wasn't working for me. I had to improvise some flattery in there," Memori said while making a right turn. "I'm just glad it worked," said Planeshift. "Next stop... well actually I still don't remember where our next stop is. But that's ok. At this moment, all I want is to get out of this ridiculous city." Then all hell broke loose.
  2. Don't worry, that's the exact reaction I had, at first. It starts getting good around episode 6. The effects do get better at a slow and steady rate. By series 3 you don't really notice how bad they are anymore. By series 6, they're top notch. But yeah, the Slitheen look pretty terrible.
  3. I wonder if you could awaken a boom mic with the command, "Stay out of frame"
  4. I'd be glad to have this happen. The whole point of the Fugitives is to show minor epics trying to outwit high epics. In this case, I will just end the post with something like, "The eastern wall of the city was in sight. Then all hell broke loose." Then you can describe what your epics do to the van. I'll probably write the post tomorrow, but no promises. I really don't know quite how busy New Year's Eve will be. Memori's limitations: Catching up with the Dalles wasn't very difficult. I still haven't read all the way through the Portland thread. I'm only halfway through that one. Sometimes I get really motivated and I read several pages in a day, and then I go a few days without reading any.
  5. They're in the middle of the city, but when they leave, they'll drive east. They can get past an outpost of soldiers pretty easily. Memori does this thing with soldiers where she erases recent memories, but leaves any boot camp and training, and then yells at them. Works every time. They're wearing rags that used to be servants' clothes. In their current state, the Fugitives don't look very epic at all. Yes, but it required a lot of skimming. I skimmed right through a religious discussion, a prehistoric wombat, and some kind of righteous censorship pony.
  6. Check out the document fragment on the right edge of the screenshot. Luthadel... audience... overturned... were it... Kelsier's... for a... I'll have to pack this away in my "Extremely tenuous evidence that Kelsier is coming back" folder in my brain.
  7. Relatively young by old people's standards? How positively vague. Nice to meet you too, Sarc.
  8. Would they try to block a road?
  9. Hmm... Unless they literally ran into them, I don't think they would stop just because they saw some other epics. Would Reflection, Mistwraith, and BusDriver try to stop the fugitives from driving away with a van that wasn't theirs? I should have thought this out more. Now that I think about it, the Fugitives would probably only stop for somebody who could force them, or for somebody who was in serious danger.
  10. I want to write my second Fugitives post in the Dalles. I plan on it going something like this: They're walking through the city, looking for a car. They encounter some squirrels or pigs, and Planeshift fights them off. They find a couple of soldiers driving a van, and Planeshift stops the van. Memori uses some tricks and the soldiers end up giving them the van. Just as they are getting into the van and are about to drive toward the eastern edge of the city, they encounter some other character(s). Who wants their characters to have a run-in with the Fugitives?
  11. Just take a few days off from WHIO, I thought. It will be easy to catch up, I thought.
  12. Upvote for the xkcd reference!
  13. The Lord Ruler was a sliver, not a shard.
  14. Wouldn't it be cool if there was a cosmere version of Risk? The answer is yes, it would be very cool. The real question is whether it would be feasible. Rather than continents, there would be shardworlds. The Perpindicularities/shardpools could be links between worlds. If you conquer a shardworld, you get a troop bonus. Have any of you played Risk: Godstorm? In that game there are "faith tokens" that you use to summon gods or miracles. In Risk: Cosmere, there could be "investiture tokens". Different magic systems require varying amounts of investiture tokens to use. For example, for some investiture tokens, you make some troops into mistborn. Now they win tie rolls when attacking. Here's something that could be added to that rule: you must own a territory on a shardworld to use it's magic system. Therefore, you would have to own a territory on Roshar before you gave any of your troops shardplate or surges. Roshar would basically be Asia. It would have multiple exits and tons of territories. Some of the countries would have to be combined into larger territories. Scadrial would be more of a problem. I can only think of three territories: Elendel Basin, the Roughs, and the Southern Continent. Hopefully the upcoming mistborn novels will shed some light on the current status of Scadrial. With Nalthis, you could have Hallandren, Idris, Pahn Kahl, Huth, and Kuth. (Yes, I know that Pahn Kahl, Huth, and Kuth aren't currently nations on Nalthis, but neither is Kamchatka, so I don't give a darn.) Sel has tons of countries and magic systems, but there are some interesting possibilities there. Because the magic systems are so localized, maybe they're all much better for defending their territory of origin. Or maybe you can use AonDor only if you have conquered Elantris, forging only if you have conquered MaiPon, et cetera. Maybe they could be extremely powerful, but only work on Sel. There are a lot of possibilities there. Minor shardworlds would be single territories, and they wouldn't give a troop bonus. However, people would still fight over those worlds for the right to a magic system that nobody else could use. It would make sense for the magic systems of minor shardworlds to require less investiture. This game really won't be able to happen for a long time. Four continents is not enough for a game of Risk. It would be much cooler if we could also use Ashyn, Taldain, Braize, and Yolen. Here are some ideas for magic:
  15. You're back! Does this mean that you are going to be able to GM your Elantris and Legion games without having to postpone them? Well, lots of old characters were being revived, and none of Newan's Scadrial characters were as fun as Chid's. Oh yeah, I almost forgot to remind everyone of how much of a threat I'm not! Hey everyone, remember that pirate quick fix where I did so poorly? Yeah. That means you don't have to pay attention to me.
  16. Yay! I really was hoping we could get our hands on the poison so we could win together. I would have killed you if I suspected you would turn on me, but that wasn't going to happen.
  17. Mostly, I'm sad that I never got to be evil. I was killed while I was being altruistic! I hadn't lied to anyone. I had even sent in an order to kill a mutt! Oh, what plans I had. What eeeeeevil plans. But that's what I get for saying "I'm going to go get an item". Woops.
  18. Hey guys! Sorry I'm late. You remember me, right? It's me, Newan! Well I wanted to announce to you all that I've decided to be a HERO. That's right. I'm turning fifteen next week, and because I'm good and old now, I think it's high time I save the world. I forged this sword here, see, and I plan on becoming a mighty warrior. For old times' sake, you see? To those of you who already figured it out, I applaud you. I know, Joe! I already said I was sorry for using your rare metals to make this sword. I promised I would pay you back. You don't have to embarrass me in front of the whole village.
  19. It's possible that in Marsh's (misplaced) guilt after what Ruin forced him to do, he wanted to stay around and help people forever. Sazed could have removed the spikes and turned him into a fullborn, but maybe Marsh viewed his appearance as part of his penance. Another possibility is that Marsh is doing Kelsier's will on Scadrial, and that he needs his powers. If Sazed were to cure Marsh, maybe he wanted to restore Marsh to how he was before the hemalurgy. Marsh wanted to keep his power, and Sazed's beliefs didn't allow him to change Marsh if Marsh didn't want to be changed. Great question, though! I think that this would be a good one to ask Brandon.
  20. WHAT IS THIS PLACE
  21. I'm still active, but I just finished a road trip and I'm to tired to RP right now. As I said before, I will be killing mutts.
  22. Oh my gosh I forgot it was today! changing my name now.
  23. Yeah I'm pretty confident that some kind of greater power was involved in at least two of those. After Shadows for Silence talked so much about the God Beyond, I do think that he helped out. For the Elantris one, in these annotations, Brandon heavily implicates that something is helping out. I don't know whether it's the God Beyond, or some remnant of Aona. zas678 copied down some things that Brandon said at a signing, and this one is relevant: He copied this down from memory, so I would take this information with a grain of salt. However, this is pretty big. It shows that cognitive shadows still have the ability to effect events. I suspect that the voice Raoden heard in the pool was the voice of Aona's cognitive shadow and that she helped him teleport, but if that's true, it is definitely possible that a cognitive shadow helped Silence in her time of need.
  24. That's cool that you also thought of it as multi-denominational church. It's always amazing to me how different groups of people come together during a disaster, so it just makes sense that in a world with constant disasters, the differences between religions wouldn't seem worth fighting over anymore. Thanks, guys! I'm glad you liked it. Also, one of the Chaoses could be glutton. I've been thinking about this one for a while. Now seems as good a time as any to post it. (I do need Kobold's permission for this one, though. It would be in character for this to happen, but I just wanted to ask and make sure.) Chaos Backup Since this Chaos literally does nothing but sit around and eat all day, I thought he fit gluttony pretty well.
