Why does the stormfather pass on the visions?
Kelek's Breath replied to Wax's topic in Stormlight Archive
As for the question in the title of the thread, Stormfather tells Dalinar that Tanavast/Honor/Almighty forced him to send the visions to whomever was a good candidate to do Bondsmithing stuff (he had sent them to Gavilar previously). -
Correct me if I'm wrong but Shinovar has mountains on both sides of it, albeit the ones towards the coast are probably not that tall. I also believe that they have caves where they place their dead (they give them up to the stone, but would they be willing to break that taboo to save themselves? Their biggest problem for the percentage that survives is food. Does the Everstorm rip up all the trees, grass and soil in Shinovar? What will the animal herds feed on? (In an ironic twist, does Rysn's "stupid grass" become the last remnant of the stuff on Roshar, and thus priceless? And is her Babsk somehow collecting items that will become rare and valuable once the Desolation begins? Do the Thaylen passions provide visions of the future?)

Grand Table of Rosharan Associations
Kelek's Breath replied to CuriousWolf's topic in Stormlight Archive
If you are interested in making a column with the curses by the Heralds names, here is a thread that will help: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/13170-swearing-by-the-heralds/ -
In Ch. 88 of WoR, Amaram is writing a letter to Restares, where he mentions some of the Sons of Honor's motives. He says: We at least know that they wanted to intentionally start a crisis/the Desolations, and knew that "very many' would die. Does very many equal 40%, 50% etc? We do not know. But pretending to be a Son of Honor and intentionally starting a Desolation are not compatible. At least Sadeas is only doing as the Sunmaker taught in modern Vorinism/Alethkar, and is consistent. In my opinion, a hypocrite is a lot worse than an honest corrupt person.

Nice find. It may be something or nothing. To note, the female Radiant in the vision calls the Midnight essence, Ten Deaths. So, there may in fact be a correlation to the 10 stances.

Sorry, I didn't explain my thought properly. I was thinking that it could be a book they find in Urithiru named Oathbringer, which is how Dalinar had coincidentally named his Blade. The Blade being a family heirloom, could mean that it was named by someone else Oathbringer. Dalinar is all about traditions so he would have kept the name. I have trouble imagining a Parshman reading let alone be a nurse. They hardly talk when prodded.

Maybe it's a book about Ishi/Ishar and the Heralds. He is the one that brought the Oaths to the Radiants after all. So, it might be a long lost book on the creation of the Knights Radiant, Pre-Recreance, so that our characters get some help on how they functioned and how to get more spren to come from Shadesmar to bond.

A Shard in its Natural Habitat; or, What Can't Shards Do?
Kelek's Breath replied to Oudeis's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I'm wondering if knowing the future is one of those things that is possible for all Shards, but some may not be able to pass on their knowledge due to their Intent which would forbid it, i.e Honor (it isn't honorable to know the outcome of your actions, since it would influence your behaviour, thus altering your actions, so you act with as much honor as you can) Honor, in the visions says that he can see the future if not as well as Cultivation, but he is forbidden about speaking of the future. -
A Shard in its Natural Habitat; or, What Can't Shards Do?
Kelek's Breath replied to Oudeis's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I think part of the inaction might be built in to the power itself as Moogle says above, but it may have to do with rules governing the individual shards. Honor, in one of the visions says to Dalinar: Depending on how you understand "All of us" (either the 3 shards on Roshar or all 16 shards), it could be saying that the shards have some rules they have to follow regarding contacting humans, cannot give outright help. But then I remember Ruin taking control of Marsh and my conclusion seems wrong. -
Small details that may have a huge impact

So, I'm guessing Mr. Sanderson is unwinding from writing before starting SA3, by answering more and more questions. Here are some more. http://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/2ytg2h/im_novelist_brandon_sanderson_ama/crzxi0y?context=3 http://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/2ytg2h/im_novelist_brandon_sanderson_ama/crzxitg?context=3 http://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/2ytg2h/im_novelist_brandon_sanderson_ama/crzxjn0?context=3 http://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/2ytg2h/im_novelist_brandon_sanderson_ama/crzxkjp?context=3 http://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/2ytg2h/im_novelist_brandon_sanderson_ama/crzxlpl?context=3 http://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/2ytg2h/im_novelist_brandon_sanderson_ama/crzxmdl?context=3 http://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/2ytg2h/im_novelist_brandon_sanderson_ama/crzxpfx?context=3

Kaladin's family reunion (Stormlight spoilers)
Kelek's Breath replied to The Honor Spren's topic in Stormlight Archive
To become a radiant, he would have had to break down after Kaladin and Tien left (plausible since he knows that one is dead and the other missing), but as a Stoneward? That's more of a militaristic order, and remember Lirin's motto? "You can't kill to protect" (or something of the sort - don't have my book handy). Maybe as an Edgedancer or a Truthwatcher (both have power of regrowth)? If anything, Roshone will still be alive and kicking to present some form of a character growth for Kaladin. Kalaldin's parents I think will have left Hearthstone to move back with Hesina's parents, who may or may not be lighteyes. I suspect that going back home and not finding his parents there will be Kaladin's growth moment, where he has to decide to either keep looking for his parents, or go to Kholinar and help protect the people there. So, no family re-union, at least in the beginning of the book. -
Well, the answers keep on coming. Not sure how to copy and paste the answers like Argent does, so I'll just provide the links. http://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/2ytg2h/im_novelist_brandon_sanderson_ama/crwabx4?context=3 http://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/2ytg2h/im_novelist_brandon_sanderson_ama/crwaeeh?context=3 http://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/2ytg2h/im_novelist_brandon_sanderson_ama/crwaeso?context=3 http://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/2ytg2h/im_novelist_brandon_sanderson_ama/crwafnh?context=3 http://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/2ytg2h/im_novelist_brandon_sanderson_ama/crwah70?context=3

crowds+spren and seon/spren sleep
Kelek's Breath replied to catrianadavar's topic in Stormlight Archive
Well, during bridge runs we see fear spren pop up among big groups of bridgemen and soldiers, so at least we know large groups of people can attract a single type of emotion spren. -
A couple of more answers by Brandon. And...he has answered more: http://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/2ytg2h/im_novelist_brandon_sanderson_ama/cr1yp2q?context=3 (answers the WoR ending change, and why he had Jasnah go off into Shadesmar) http://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/2ytg2h/im_novelist_brandon_sanderson_ama/cr2g9ed?context=3

He answered another question: http://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/2ytg2h/im_novelist_brandon_sanderson_ama/cq5oxvz?context=3 And this opens up possibilities for one of the protagonists picking up the Shard.

During a re-read. The saved Bridgeman.
Kelek's Breath replied to snote's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Sorry to jump in, but the bridgeman in question is a bridgeman from another crew, Bridge 8, that Kaladin treats in TWoK Ch. 53, "Dunny", after he witnesses Dunny killed by arrows. Without quoting, he is dark skinned, and Kaladin expects him to have an Azish accent, but he does not. Not sure if he remains with the crew after he becomes well. Presumambly, he is one of the bridgemen left behind in the barracks when the Tower incident happens. Aside from the dark skin and no accent, he is described as having long hair, but nothing about being muscular, which Taln is described to be. -
This would be a good question to ask Mr. Sanderson at a signing. Can the Heralds have contact with the "outside" or pass instructions while in the place they are being tortured? Can they at least have contact with spren while there?

I am hesitant to say that they existed pre-K.R., because of what 'vision Nohadon' believes, that even though a Desolation is finished and great catastrophe has befallen on them, he will find it hard to convince other kings not to look to their own advantage (meaning the other kings will go on a conquering spree), If this is the case, without someone policing the gates (K.R.), would any king think it a good idea to allow access to their kingdoms through the Oathgates? Do you think that any human world leader would have said "Hitler/Genghis Khan/Alexander the Great/Xerxes are nice guys. Why not share a gate to our holy city so we can travel quickly between our kingdoms?" Edit: Beaten to the punch by hoser's comment above. Has anyone asked if there is a way that everyone on Roshar knows the Desolation has ended? Something like a cannon going off, a la Hunger games?
-
Upvote for finding the picture. To your point, I guess what we know thus far about Nohadon is that he was the author of the in-world Way of Kings, a book that the Radiants used as their guide book. The visions are given to Dalinar from Honor via the Stormfather; in the visions Tanavast tells Dalinar to read the book, so we can guess that in the vision is the true Nohadon (whose book Tanavast is shamelesly promoting). The various theories pop up depending on which way you explain the possible contradictions between the content of his book and what other sources tell us about the pre-recreance Roshar. I take the stance that the evidence points that Nohadon lived through multiple Desolations and was around when Ishar forced the K.R. to be founded, but this was at a later time than the vision shows.
-
Ok. I am correcting myself, and my belief about the gate situation. Apparently, the Gates of Urithiru, are actually the gates of the Tower of Urithiru. I had been thinking that the Oathgates would have been included inside the complex, because I assumed that Urithiru was the entire complex. I guess Urithiru refers specifically to the Tower and not the surroundings (Oathgate plateau, mountain). It seems Patrick Star's idea that either Nohadon is a Bondsmith and used his suction cup powers (insert picture of Tom Cruise with suction cups on skyscrapper) or he used a horse are correct. Also, there is an issue with the existence of Oathgates before the forming of K.R., and that is that they are all (as far as we can tell)in the capital cities of the Silver Kingdoms, Kingdoms that came into existence (according to lore) after the K.R were formed. Remember in the vision, Nohadon starts naming kingdoms that were destroyed and Dalinar is looking at him dumb, because he doesn't know any of the places? The Silver Kingdoms were all known (we even have a map in the books of them). This may be a chicken or egg situation: which came first, the Oathgates and then the Silver Kingdoms grew around them or the Silver Kingdoms and the Oathgates were placed in their capitals.
-
I guess when vision Nohadon says "when the Heralds come next time, what will they find" I interpreted that as Desolation is over and Heralds have left. I may be wrong. Also, because he is walking and he contrasts that to his family travelling via the preferred, easy way I thought gate=road (not oathgate). And because there don't seem to be any gates on the plateau with the Oathgates. Again my assumption. No, i know vision Nohadon lived several desolations before Radiants or at the very least one. I'm just thinking that there are either multiple Nohadons or one super-long living Nohadon (through stormlight/investiture). I don't think he could have formed the knights, built Urithiru in the span of a regular Roshar lifetime.
