Warbreaker movie casting (dream list) *spoilers*
theravenchilde replied to BreathTaker's topic in Warbreaker
I'm just gonna have to plug my fancast again cuz I'm getting started with Elantris soon, so like, why would you want the suggestions above when you could have Oscar Issac as Lightsong and a million other significantly better and also not whitewashed choices? Also I would want people to examine their casting picks when they put significantly older men with younger women. It's creepy.- 99 replies

There's already a topic for this, if y'all want to revive it. But also no please put all of these whitewashed castings back in the mistborn thread where they belong. this is the original topic, if you want to continue there. As you can see, most of your suggestions are already there, with various discussion and about how you could do a lot better with these characters.

because men and women definitely can't be friends because of Reasons so men in same sex relationships can't ask their female friends to read something for them and the couple's friends would of course only send them written mail instead of adapting to their preferred form of communication bc they care about them also precludes the possibility of a transdude who was raised according to female gender norms, and/or a partner from a nonvorin society who doesn't abide by such nonsense vice versa, shallan and a tall buff lady knight. they both have swords. they are in love. they can see each others safehands all they want. adolin cries. tears of happiness. his friend has found true love. also the tall lady knight intimidates him. shallan doesn't care. this woman could kick her butt and she loves it.
-
but the important thing here and also the topic of this thread is that Shallan is a canon bisexual so lets celebrate that, eh?

I'm gonna go with the simpler route of "Jasnah should be gay so I can kiss her." Don't need no logic hoops there, just my own hopes and dreams.

Here's my recording of the Q&A. It took forever to upload. Did you guys record the DnD panel that night? I didn't do that and I wish I had cuz it was hilarious.
-
I recorded the Q&A part of his spotlight panel, let me upload the videos to youtube.

It's a serious convention, for the most part. I would not come in cosplay, but nerdy tshirts and stuff are fine. It is majorly geared towards writers and artists looking to learn from people already in the business and do ground-level networking, so thats what 90% of the panels are about. The other 10% is every single author gushing over Brandon, or Brandon gushing about say, Terry Goodkind.

Just clean up after yourselves and put the tables and chairs back in order, please, and the Cougareat is yours. (source: I am a manager there) -
YES HELLO THIS IS MY THREAD AND QUESTION okay so wow I didn't even know they recorded my question. So the reason I asked about the Catholic Church extends back to the early uses of syncopation in their chants, particularly Gregorian ones and other hymns. Syncopation is a key part of jazz music. It was frequently used by Bach and Handel, and Hanel was a Late Baroque composer, which I confirmed in this conversation was very roughly analogous to the Final Empire period (assuming pre-Empire was late Renaissance, and they didn't progress almost at all under the Lord Ruler). The question there was kind of blurred, but I specifically asked if you reasonably compare the Steel Ministry to the Church in terms of their influence on culture and music, which was a yes. So, if the Steel Ministry has a comparable amount of hymns, all composers in the Empire would have been heavily influenced or directly patronized by the Ministry, probably more so than the Catholic Church would censor things. So all of their music would follow similar styles to Ministry hymns. There's also a quote from somewhere in the books, I don't have it on hand right now because I don't have my annotated copies with me, that talks about how the skaa got ALL of their knowledge directly from the obligators and others in the Ministry, and their whole religious life was run by them. Songs are an easy way to impart knowledge in a fashion that sticks; I can still remember church songs I haven't sung since I was little word-perfect. Why wouldn't the obligators teach the skaa hymns? And it would be easy to take the hymns from church to the field, especially ones that have a beat to them that help the work. From there, it could absolutely develop into its own forms, aka the "slave songs" of the south that birthed jazz. There would be a historical precedence for syncopation in music, and this provides the culture that really makes it. Post-HoA, it would absolutely be a working class musical style, since the nobility would still be stuck trying to move past 'proper' Baroque music. Since Scadrial's culture is a little stunted, it takes a little longer to develop from spirituals to blues and ragtime and THEN to jazz, and the nobles won't try to take over the form until right before the big band era (the difference between say, Louis Armstrong (jazz, primarily a black musical style) and Caro Emerald or George Gershwin (big band, white people trying to make it pretty)). I also think that the Church of the Survivor would end up creating gospel music. It has to happen. Mmm, did I miss anything?

In my Alloy of Law era fics they definitely have an equivalent of Easter and Christmas for Kelsier. Christmas is now Survivormas, and I am attempting to extrapolate dates on Scadrial to make them line up with Earth ones.

I've been working on an Alloy of Law era Homestuck crossover for over a year now, and I recently posted the first chapter of the prelude story on Ao3. It's not necessary that you've read Homestuck, but it's certainly more amusing if you have. This AU is also going to be my exploration of jazz in Scadrial, and basically the evolution of music and culture in general, as I referenced in the Heaven, Hell and the Steel Ministry thread. I have done so much research trying to reasonably match various developments in Scadrial to its real-world counterparts (as Scadrial is Brandon's Earth-analogue) and I'e gotten Brandon to confirm a number of my guess as being basically correct. This is going to be an extremely slow updating fic, but I'm expecting a serious amount of worldbuilding to go with it that is entirely not-Homestuck. Most of this info will be crossposted to my own tumblr and my fic's tumblr, mistbornstuck.

Warbreaker movie casting (dream list) *spoilers*
theravenchilde replied to BreathTaker's topic in Warbreaker
Really the only and strongest point I can make about this is that Hallandren bears absolutely no resemblance to England, and is therefore not a "typical" fantasy book. It's a tropical jungle, not an idyllic woodland realm. Tropical. Jungle. Rainforest. Not England. Rarely seen in stereotypical fantasy.- 99 replies

So, at SLCC, I asked Brandon if it would be reasonable to compare the Steel Inquisition with the Catholic Church, at least in structure and power (I was really just trying to confirm my theories on musical development, which were actually all correct heck yeah). Obviously not doctrine, although some methods of Inquisition are not unexpectedly probably similar. So yeah there's that.

Feather had me ask about Renarin's eye color (no go, Brandon told me to email him because he couldn't remember off the top of his head) and I confirmed my theorizing about the musicdal development of scadrial (aka jazz). Oh, and the locations of the Fireflight and Shadows of Self releases (Orem B&N and the BYU Bookstore respectively). -

I'll be there all day on Saturday as well! I have a small pile of questions from Tumblr folk I will attempt to ask him, but I literally don't have anything left for him to sign! -
I was intending to have jazz clubs and speakeasies in my Mistborn/Homestuck au I'm working on, so I will end up having a poopload of meta and worldbuilding on how this would happen in the first place. I'll see what I can come up with for a starter in the meantime, though. I've found a few vague mentions of religious ceremony types things after reading today. Apparently TLR used some sort of "metal triangle" (.... a shuriken ?? pls be a shuriken can you imagine ninja Inquisitors) in some of the Steel Ministry's ceremonies, although Marsh does not elaborate as he is busy killing people with them like he's friggin' Magneto. I'll post the reference and a couple other things I found later.

We have next to no information on the actual doctrine of the Steel Ministry, as far as I am aware. I was kinda thinking about this the other night (while attempting to reverse engineering the possible origins of jazz on Scadrial based on the use of antiphony in masses and psalms, then comparing the Ministry to the Catholic Church and its development from medieval times through the Baroque period) and wondering how the religion would function if no one actively participated in it besides its priests. I assumed Brandon used references to heaven and hell to keep Scadrial as Earth-analogous as possible. Unless there are any religious references in the MAG, which I have not read yet, then we only know that the Ministry taught a boiled-down version of Alendi's logbook from TLR's perspective. We have much more on the Ministries' internal structure and politic-mongering, and I think Yomen be our best religious representative on this matter, but I don't know that he ever mentioned heaven or hell. I am about to get to him in my reread, however, and I will be on the lookout in case he does.

Moirailegiance. Which is actually a romantic bond, there's just not sex involved, so it's not a traditional human romance. Moirails rely on each other for emotional well being in a mutual, loving relationship. It's not the same as "friend"shipping. And while in terms of canon I consider Quiver's point to be the most likely (cough you can still have ace!Jasnah and Shasnah cough), I'm still just gonna sit over here in camp Shasnah and party.

Warbreaker movie casting (dream list) *spoilers*
theravenchilde replied to BreathTaker's topic in Warbreaker
Haha, Benjamin is my Llarimar! He is one of the ones I could move around, though, as he doesn't really fit Llarimar's description (portly). I can see him as a reasonable choice for Denth as well, but I don't have a good backup for Llarimar then. This casting was like a puzzle that's missing pieces--I only have so many pieces that can go in so many places, and if I fill one spot then there's nothing else to fill this other spot and it is very annoying Hollywood needs more Latin@ actors. So you can reference here, Cracknut, "I made my cast on the assumption that the area of Nalthis where Hallandren and Idris are located is environmentally similar to South America, specifically between Peru and Brazil. As such, all of the images in my graphics are from there, and 99% of my actors are either born in Latin America, of direct descent in a very few cases, or at minimum a person of color. Hallandren is a jungle. I picked the Amazon, but we could very well use the Congo, or India, or Polynesia." Hence my exclusion of anyone from the Firefly cast, because although the verse is apparently dominated by the Chinese, they did not feature a single Asian actor, and the majority of the main cast was white.. I am attempting to avoid using black actors or Asian here, as I am using them more heavily in my Mistborn casting and, should I take up the burden, a possible Stormlight cast. If it makes you feel better, if I do an Elantris casting there will probably be mostly white people there. Also, because of the sheer amount of ah, usage of any actor from Firefly/Lord of the Rings/Doctor Who/Sherlock/Supernatural etc I've seen on all the casting threads on 17s, I am rather biased against any actor from there. It's totally fine if you think Baldwin and Fillion would be good in Warbreaker! They're decent actors! You're welcome to list them in your own dream cast. But I do not want them anywhere near my casting.- 99 replies
