Quick Fix 65: More Deception: Murder in the Cosmere
Kasimir replied to Araris Valerian's topic in Sanderson Elimination
What do you mean? I think he stated in non-optimal cases, he sometimes chooses to 'rule things out', e.g. the Noon choice wasn't Assassin-related last iteration, so much as to help us rule out Night-based options. Why wouldn't you pick Arena or Battlefield in that case as location? So much more obvious. Why wouldn't you pick Visual rather than Sudden Sound? Nightblood's black smoke is iconic. My sense is you're reading this as Method-indicative rather than Evidence-indicative, yeah? Not sure where I stand on that right now - as TJ pointed out. my Stone case is based on a bash to the skull with a Stone, so if we read it as being Method-related, then I think Stone is a non-starter - Araris should've gone with Head in that world. Fair. I guess that's another point that sticks out to me though: given how much that was being mentioned last iteration, I feel as though Araris would surely have given us the easy out by not selecting Wilderness if wildlife attacks hadn't been involved. I don't know how convinced I feel of this though.- 528 replies

Fair. It's what I'm leaning towards right now, yeah. I'm beginning to understand the attraction of Aimian and going back to the Bow/Pistol/Crossbow triad. My current qualms with Explosion(s) is I'm not sure they make sense for Wilderness or an Elderly Slave. I continue to struggle as I think some of the wildlife cases can in fact cause Severe Injury but the Sudden Sound holds me back - I'd expect Hemalurgic Chimeras to hoot more, I accept Archer's point on the big boi Chasmfiend, which would leave me with a loose set of <Firesnap Lizards, Whitespine, Sandling, Nightmaw.> Deathants are an edge case because their pods make a distinctive hissing sound but that feels very hairsplitting and I'm not sure Araris would use Sudden Sound for that, so I still rule them out. I rule out Grandbow as that's closer to the battlefield. I sort of want to rule in Stone for Archer instead of Parshendi - the sudden noise could be the sound of the Ja's skull breaking? So say I take the set: <Bow, Pistol, Crossbow, Firesnap Lizards, Whitespine, Sandling, Nightmaw, Stone.> JNV = Bow and Arrow + Metal Flakes / Hog Wiz = Firesnap / Pistol + Lizard / Bullet Casings Sart = Whitespine + Religious Text Stick = Sandling + Chull Dung / White Sand TJ = Nightmaw + Red Flag / Death Rattle Archer = Stone + Claw Marks / Shrine. I need a nap before I can make an assessment of likelihood. But some scattered thoughts: -Sandling + White Sand is a bold choice. Maybe not so likely. -Death Rattle feels like it should be prolonged. -Firesnap and Lizard or Pistol and Bullet Casings is also bold.- 528 replies

I would argue this is significant since as Jasnah points out, the Parshendi sing when they kill. Suppose we take Partial to be corpse condition and Slave to rule out a bunch of Evidence on the grounds a Slave wouldn't have, say, Hallendren dyes?- 528 replies

Fair. I think I agree on Elderly Slave being odd for a hunting expedition gone wrong scenario, though I had wondered if Araris picked Elderly for Grumpy Old Guy reasons but don't think he'd have let that get in the way of making sense. I think my main issue with creatures is they're either lethal enough that Severe Injury makes sense but Sudden Sound doesn't, or they're not that lethal, in which case you'd expect Prolonged Noise. Which probably does bring me back to the projectile weapons, maybe Cliff if I'm looking for crack. Low key tempted to wonder if Parshendi is ruled out by Sudden Sound. You'd expect them to be Attuning Rhythmns, no? But why pick Slave? Retrieving lost Pet Lizard/Monkey then got shot? How do you know this?- 528 replies

If you think "noticed by bystander" captures left-behind evidence, then aren't you by default restricted to any piece of evidence that is an animal or a musical instrument? Is this where your guesses are at? It's certainly not inconceivable we'll get more evidence hints later, but I think it beggars belief he wouldn't even try to give us a single hint about the Evidence on Cycle 1, and I don't see this as a controversial assumption, given you are tacitly making it as well. I'd consider partial a catch-all category, i.e. Araris selecting 'best of a bad lot': I've been using it to rule out anything that fits in other category, e.g. Colorful Scarf and Ragged Cloak seems better fit for Partial than All-Over (see: Ragged.) Pet Monkey, IMO, would also be Partial just because nothing else fits - meanwhile, Evidence like Make Up is better suited for head, therefore can be ruled out, while Half-Eaten Pancakes are reasonably in the Hand.- 528 replies

I think the question is, is Partial the corpse condition, though? Because IMO, there's a distinction between: Hint on Corpse Head Chest Hand Leg Partial All-over and Corpse Condition Still Warm Stiff Decayed Altered Intact Twisted Specifically wrt intact or not. You could argue the overlap is necessary and ambiguity is part of the game (yes, fair), but I've been currently reading this as a claim about the Evidence rather than the Method ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Edited to add: Maybe let me rephrase/reframe this question. Do you think that Araris completely neglected to give us any hint about the Evidence this cycle? If he didn't, then which tile(s) captures it?- 528 replies

@Archer, @Matrim's Dice I think my issue with creature deaths is that I feel some count as accidental and some could count as severe injury. Deathants kill with a single bite, so I could see that being more accidental. Chasmfiends, deepwalkers, whitespines, and nightmaws are so lethal that I can't see death by these vectors as being 'accidental' when they could just as easily be through severe injury. I think the better argument against them is that you'd think becoming say, a nightmaw chewtoy would lead to a Prolonged Sound. Depends on where you shoot with the pistol. Can run the gamut from trauma injury to bleeding out, with severe blood loss being a clear death vector. Source: first aid exams on treating gunshot wounds, never again please :| I think my issue with air-powered crossbow is that it's less likely to make a sudden noise - seems analogous to a gun with a suppressor. ( @Amanuensis, any relevant expertise here?) Why would a wild animal attack be an Accident? Becoming a chasmfiend chewtoy isn't 'accidental', and the immediate cause of death would be Severe Injury. It would also lead us back towards territory like Highstorms and Cliff, which is arguably just as misleading, in the wild animal attack world you're considering. But in general, I just struggle to understand why you would do Wilderness which is misleading rather than Arena or Battlefield or Rooftops, which is arguably more crossbow associated. I could see Pistol working with Wilderness though, so I'm not fully against this. Why would he? You yourself pointed out last game that the best play is to pick a disconnected Evidence from Method of Death. It isn't the Assassin's job to come up with a coherent Scene-of-Crime narrative - that's the GM's job. Edited to add: Ettmetal Explosion or just Explosion shouldn't be consistent with Wilderness, yeah? I'm filling out my matrices atm.- 528 replies

[OOC: Colour later. One last thought before sleep: I think the fact Araris selected slave rather than no rank or peasant is significant. Do slaves get assassinated? Whatever death is or method, it came to a slave in the wilderness with a sudden sound. Suggestion that it's more plausible a cause of death for an elderly slave. The fact that Araris chose sudden sound over prolonged sound, action, nothing, or visual is likely also significant. Off the top of my head, no visual should rule out Nightblood for instance.] Edited to add: Sorry another last thought I lied. Death must have come very fast. Prolonged death is unlikely to bring about a sudden noise. Unless it removed his ability to vocalise, the Ja would have been screaming as any reasonable person would.- 528 replies

[OOC: Need sleep. Hail insomnia. Things that stand out: Wilderness - Not so easy this time. Location choice still significant IMO: lack of Ocean, urban areas is significant here and off the top of my head should point towards animal kill methods. Am actually considering Meekers and then realised that I have Meekers. RIP. Thing is, problem with animal methods is twofold: first, a sudden sound was noticed (I'd expect animal attack to be more prolonged, especially if a mauling occurred. Whatever it was, death seems to have come quickly.) Second, hint on corpse is partial. This is more likely to be evidence related (cf. QF33b Sunglasses being tied to Evidence on Head), but part of me wonders whether it's corpse condition related. On further thought I kind of doubt so because I feel like that's covered under Corpse Condition or whatever it was last game, but worth keeping in mind anyway. Cause of Death being severe injury suggests we should rule out anything that has the potential to cause significant bloodloss or strangulation. Again, FML, my brain goes to Meekers. Was gonna post this but Alpha posted so am adding I disagree with Alpha and a bit suspicious of Alpha for the suggestion. Feel weapon-related Methods should not lead Araris to select Wilderness - he's basically guaranteeing by this choice that we will waste time on Patji options if true that really weapon based. Good night.]- 528 replies

This was definitely an interaction between two ordinary officers, neither of whom could have remotely done something as morally repugnant as murdering the Ja*, which Aurel still theorised had been done by this Aracle himself. *For legal reasons, it is worth remembering that Aurel is new out of the Silverlight Police Academy.- 528 replies

Aurel Kourakis ate his cup noodles. It was very soupy. That was the best that could be said of it. That, and the fact it was warm, which was comforting in a room full of kayana people who were insisting that they were all evil because they carried red flags or chull dung or prayed via Hemalurgic earrings. Personally, Aurel liked to think that Warmmha spoke to him via the lozenge medallion. So perhaps he shouldn't cast stones. The more he thought about it though, the more he wondered if the Aracle...if people weren't too quick to take the back-up, the Aracle as being genuine. He hadn't seen any sign of the Aracle's powers, and no one mentioned the Aracle at the Silverlight Police Academy. It was always 'the Ja' this and 'the Ja' that. But the classic case studies always said an officer had to pay attention to who stood to gain. Who benefited from the Ja's death? It was like being the back-up singer for a rock band, Aurel thought. They'd had one when he was a kid. Called Knife of Day or something just as edgy. Thing was, the back-up singer never liked being back-up. Everyone wanted the spotlight, one way or another. So how about this: maybe the Aracle had the Ja killed. Maybe they should look into him. [OOC: @Araris Valerian, is the Aracle a valid suspect? This isn't an Accusation yet but I'm starting to suspect the Aracle killed the Ja with the Homicidal Bus Driver Method. Speculating between the Wooden Splinter and the Torn Ledger Page as the Key Evidence here. I'm guessing the Torn Ledger Page would've rustled in the wind from the bus - probably from a rental ledger or something of that sort. But I could also see the Wooden Splinter as having been jarred from a thwacking staff during some extreme bus driving.]- 528 replies

Bleach, and consider letting it sit in the sun for a while. If you're considering putting any inks in it in future, definitely bleach.

[OOC: No wonder I kept wondering why the second column looked off, but was too tired to process >>] [OOC: I didn't find them that helpful. I preferred working on spreadsheets. I stand by what I said last game, it really wasn't a good way of sharing data. So yeah, not do it? ] Edit: Some of the other investigators were praising the Ja. Aurel wasn't so sure about that. If the Ja was all-knowing, why couldn't he have prevented his death? His hand went to the strange, lozenge-shaped medallion he kept in his vest pocket. Warmmha grant that we find the Ja's killer, he thought. He hoped the Aracle was up to the task. Edited to add 2: [OOC: Tbh I'd be more afraid to ask why sunglasses :eyes: ]- 528 replies

The Ja was dead. Aurel Kourakis wasn't sure that was the sort of thing he'd wanted to hear at his first day at work. As far as he could tell, the Silverlight Police Force was milling about, officers and investigators gathering in the Situation Room. When he asked one of the other officers what was going on, the officer said, "You must be new here." "Yes." "The Ja is dead." Aurel blinked. As far as he knew, the Ja was legendary: many of Silverlight's most successful investigations had been led by the Ja himself, and however he'd come by his various claims about the crime scene. Perhaps it was something to do with Fortune. Aurel wasn't very clear on the basics. Hell, Aurel wasn't very clear about most things, having come in without a proper Scene-of-Crime kit. They'd not said anything about reporting with one, after all. "So, what do we do?" he asked, cautiously. The officer rolled his eyes. "Find out who killed the Ja, of course." Aurel could get on board with that. But how to do that without the Ja? He must've voiced his thoughts aloud, because the Silverlight officer sighed and said, "We have a backup. Calls himself the Aracle. Look, just report to the Situation Room and wait. Bring something to take notes. The Aracle will communicate with us in about twenty-four hours." "And we're just going...to sit there for twenty-four hours?" "You have something better to do, rookie?" Admittedly, he didn't. Still, he bought a cup noodles from a nearby vending machine. At least he was going to get something to eat while he waited.- 528 replies

Not so much saying it's E!indicative, I should clarify. More saying that even if we say that's how the Elim team has an incentive to play, I'm not sure an Elim player ending up with an extra Accusation from a Villager is the worst Village outcome, all things considered.- 528 replies

I have had mouldy ink, ink with sediment, and ink with particles. I haven't had issues using the last two with a beater and avoiding cross contamination, but have explicitly highlighted it's a risk appetite issue. Certainly throwing out any ink is a surefire way to avoid any problems altogether.

Fair. Would never disagree Thinking aloud but not necessarily for this game in particular: complete RNG for who it goes to? Elims sitting on their guesses and completely refusing to use them or solve should be telling - Elim team sat back/sat deep last iteration. If they do produce a guess, it still generates information. It might be a bit anti-Village but given a Village win in all three iterations so far, not sure it's the worst fix?- 528 replies

Wanted to ask about the impact this has on gameplay. Suppose I'm Village and InactivePlayer's Accusation comes to me. Given that as long as one of us accuses right, and the Witness isn't found, we win, does this essentially give me the ability to clear (for myself) one player from PoE entirely?- 528 replies

Oh, I know. I meant that I'd never disagree with not wanting to take that risk (as long as it's not clearly mould) with some pens, but would also be fine putting it in a cheap beater. Boiled that down to a 'your pen, your choice' statement since it's really about risk threshold and I can get having a strict policy of not messing around when inks behave abnormally.
