  1. My take is that Adonalsium was not shattered all at once, rather each different Shard was separated from it individually, shaped into their sixteen different Intents. So they should be numbered in the order that they were separated from each other. I could be way off, but it makes sense to me. It might also have to do with the order in which the Shards were taken up by their holders, I don't know. I wonder what number/colour Harmony would have?

Both of those ideas are very interesting. And it would be very cool to find out that was the case, it would give us insight into the early history of the cosmere.

  2. This is totally off-topic, but lyht's profile pic looks really awesome.

    Thanks!

I wonder if the colours and numbers are intrinsic to the Shard's nature, a conscious decision to stick to a certain theme by the Shareholder, a 'pollution' of the Shard by the Shareholder's Cognitive aspect that associates certain themes with the Intent, biasing the magic system and themes, a thematic decision by Brandon that will go unexplained, or something else?

"Something else?" Is there something else? I think you just described everything possible.

Personally, I am still trying to wrap my head around the numbers relating to the Shards rather than the world. The numbers on Scadrial and Roshar seem to have as much effect on the magic as the focus. And I think there was a WoB that said the focus is more related to the world, but maybe I am remembering wrong.

  3. Are there five Iridescent tones?

Also, the number of Breaths need for each Heightening are just rough estimates, because different Breaths have different strengths. So, 42 breaths with an average strength of 1.2 times the average breath strength on Nalthis might be enough for the first Heightening.

I can't find a number on the Iridescent Tones.

But you are right, the number of Breaths is an estimate.

  4. Yes, 5 Scholars. The 5 visions. And the multiples of the heightenings. (Thanks Joe, hadn't thought of that)

And reading the annotations, Brandon mentions that Pahn Kahl worship five gods.

If you’re curious, the Pahn Kahl are nature worshippers who focus on the storms of the Inner Sea as a manifestation of their unity of five gods.

Not definitive, but fairly strong evidence... if the worlds all do have a number.

  5. So it seems all the planets have a number of some importance. Scadrial's is 16, Roshar has 10, and Nalthis has 5. But I can't pin down a number for Sel.

Of course it is possible that Brandon had not started the whole number thing when he wrote those stories, or maybe all planets are not meant to have one, but let's assume they do.

The only number I can get for Sel is 3, because there are three view-points in Elantris, and there are three base elements of Aons: the coast, the mountain range, and the lake. But that feels very flimsy and doesn't seem to match up with the fact that most of the Aons are balanced with an even number of base elements.

Could there be other numbers that seem to be a theme of Sel?

I know the feeling that you want a system that has all the bells and whistles, that is able to collate and display all interesting info in unified nice modern clean fun easy to use interfaces. But for one thing, you wouldn't be able to just copy all the data from Theoryland (en-bulk), because it's probably licensed to them, and it's also totally and utterly unfair to rip all their data after the thousands of hours they've put into it. And splitting effort (on input) between two sites just reduces efficiency and quality over all. I'm sorry it's taking so long to improve/fix Theoryland, but it will get done.

I agree with everything you said. It brings up another question to me: Does Theoryland currently attempt to consolidate all WoBs? I know they pull a bunch in, like annotations, etc. But is it even possible to get everything? Do they have special permission to get content off TOR, or other sites? Could my dream to have a single clearing house be a dream of smoke?

  7. I went ahead and set one up that fits most of my wish-list. It does not give the ability to browse a QA event, but maybe that doesn't matter since that is what Theoryland is for...

But just about everything else is there. What I don't know is if anyone else cares. Entering all WoB into one site would probably be a ton of work, which would be wasted if it doesn't really serve any new purpose.

Anywho, here is the link to the test site:

  8. So... I sometimes go wandering through the WoB stuff found around the webernets, and I usually find it to be a frustrating experience. First, while much of it is on Theoryland, there many other sites and locations, including this forum. Second, it is all combined and grouped by event. Third, the searching and tagging features seem to be hit-and-miss.

None of that is a complaint against existing sites. Theoryland's is awesome and I am grateful for it.

However, the current state of affairs does not work very well for me when I want to do research. So, I got thinking it might be nice to make a new site that brings everything together in one place. Maybe it could even be "Official" like this site.

I started looking around at different FAQ systems, and decided to come here and get some feedback. Is this something that would be useful to people other than me?

Here are the features I would want in an ideal world:

    • Categories as well as tags. I would like to be able to just search through Cosmere sometimes, and not be distracted by WoT, or general questions about writing. Or visa-versa.
    • Ability to browse a single QA session, or browse all topics in a single category or tag
    • Simple way to link to an source (i.e. Theoryland, TOR, etc)
    • Clean tool for entering a bunch of questions from a new event.
    • In addition to categories and tags, an easy way to link related questions
    • Anyone should be able to sign up for an account to contribute.

    Thoughts?

  9. It is interesting to think about Aons as weapons.

At first I was thinking you would have to prepare a bunch of Aons on paper or something that you could trigger with a touch. You go into a fight and you trigger them one at a time toward your target. But then I realised that Aons drawn on something physical seem to continue to work and not just flash and burn away. You would not need a bunch to fire off one at a time, you would just need controls built into one to turn it on and back off.

I thought of Roy Mustang in Fullmetal Alchemist, with the fire rune on his gloves, and with a snap he triggers a forceful blast of fire.

I wonder what other types of things you could do? Could there be runes to change your personally gravity? Control water, wind, or earth? Could you have a bunch of different Aons tattooed on your body to do different things?

Although that brings up another question. If I make an Aon, am I the only one that can use it? Or could someone make weapons to be used by other people?

  10. It should also be noted that, while AonDor is extremely flexible and very powerful, it is also intricate and slow. When it comes to combat efficiency, unless they had time to prepare, I think an Elantrian would be easy prey to an Allomancer and most Knight Radiants.

I agree that AonDor is not generally cut out for one-on-one combat, as was seen in the closing fight between Raoden and Dilaf.

Interesting to think about what an Elantrian could do to "Prepare".

  11. And for the gajillionth time I want to finally pick up web development and make a site dedicated specifically to cosmere theorycrafting and indexing... One day, folks. One day.

Couldn't we use part of coppermind for that? Oh, wait there was an entire discussion about that, with no final consensus. However, if a wiki system could handle it, it is easy to set one up. If not, what do you want in a site like this? and maybe there is some type of system that would work.

  12. In a word, Elantris. It's a massive power booster the size of an entire city. The weak, pitiful effects prior to Raodan fixing the Aon are the normal, unboosted level of Aondor power. There's also been some theorizing that prior to the creation of Elantris, all Arelons could use Aondor just like Forging, Dakhor, etc, and that Elantris concentrated that power into a select few, those struck by the Shaod, and thus gave them an extreme powerup.

I was thinking along those same lines. I wonder if this could be another example of compounding.

  13. So I have about a billion questions about everything in the cosmere, and of course many of them are not really answerable, but that won't stop me from asking.

So here is one of my first about Elantris:

Why is the Elantrian magic so freakin powerful?

    On Roshar... (WOR spoiler)

you have to convince an object to change. Or use a fabrial and pay for it with your health, plus the results are often not quite quite right.

Over in MaiPon (Emperors Soul) you have to write a plausible history for the object that could-have-been, and the seal must remain attached.

Scadrial and Nalthis don't really have magic that let you change what an object is.

In Elantris, you just draw up the correct Aon, and BAMB, garbage is food. Thoughts? WoB quotes?

  14.

I'm assuming that since you can burn all metals, they all have they're own sDNA, but how is the sDNA of a non-allomantic metal deadly? and how do two types of sDNA combine to form a new alloy? When does a pewter alloy have enough lead to become deadly?

For that matter, if Aluminum destroys the sDNA of  metals, how can it possibly be alloyed with Copper?

The sDNS of metals? That is new to me. I fairly sure I read WOB state that the metal is actually a pattern. So I would imagine that if the metal is off, the pattern is wrong. And just like Aons that are not drawn correctly, metals that are off can have bad consequences.

  15. This hasn't been asked yet. But it should simply cut the lifeless. The breath is not the Soul, As such, lifeless have no soul, and aren't alive. So a Shardblade would simply cut them in half. The real question is would the Top half of the Lifeless keep attacking?

Yes... but could it have an effect on the Breath? Could it perhaps cut that single breath, and thus end that lifeless?
