  1. Four scenes below off the top of my head. If your comment was a tongue in cheek joke, feel free to disregard my post. Words of Radiance page 17 (spoiled for length) Words of Radiance page 109 (spoiled for length) Jasnah Deleted Scene (spoiled for length) Oathbringer page 476 (spoiled for length)
  2. If you mean if he breaks the oaths while she is floating around, not in shardblade form, would that force her into shardblade form, that I do not know. I believe so, but I am not sure if it is explicit in the WoB or not. I will pull them up and add them for clarity. Questioner (paraphrased) If after speaking the Third Ideal, Kaladin were to betray his oaths, would Syl turn into a Shardblade? Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased) Yes. Words of Radiance Washington, DC signing (March 20, 2014) No worries. Didn't mean it for it to be a nitpick, nor to disprove your theory. Just meant it as added info, to potentially add to your theory. Which looks like it did, so great
  3. So this all came up across the span of the thread. I'll sum them up quickly below 1. The gemstones mined from the ground are from deceased greatshells ages ago. That is how they can have mining of gemstones, but no plate tectonics. 2. Gemhearts do grow in other shelled beasts, but for gemhearts of great size for larger fabrials, the great shelled beasts seem to be the prime source (some have theorized that it is possible to breed smaller shelled beasts to grow larger gemhearts. I personally disagree, but their argument is mentioned in further detail earlier in the thread) 3. Brandon has confirmed that the killing of great shells on the shattered plains will have a similar fallout as whaling did on earth. We already know of a great shell people think is extinct. The lanceryn of aimia. Though via WoB, we found out that Larkin is their early form. So at least two exist (Nale, and Rysn) So the reason for the debate was thinking of a way to maintain large gemstone production without making the source (greatshells) extinct. Three possibilities that came up were: 1. breeding smaller shelled beasts to produce larger gemhearts over generations 2. breeding chasmfiends via free ranging 3.research and develop synthetic gemstones. Hopefully that clarified things.
  4. I do agree, there seems to be a lot more going on with soulcasting than we know, and it is one of the powers I am most interested in learning more about! Brandon confirmed that after the third ideal, if Kaladin broke the oaths, Syl would be locked into shardblade form, though since Kaladin is the oath swearing knight that broke them, it would be easier for him to revive her via re-swearing the oaths. Nothing to do with your theory, but as an aside, do we have a WoB that Maya is from a 3rd ideal radiant? Since she is a shardblade, we can assume the radiant is at least 3rd ideal, but she could potentially be up to 4th, or 5th ideal. The windrunner and stoneward radiants in Dalinar's vision all had their shardplate, so theoretically they were all at least at their 4th oath. So Maya could be 3rd, 4th, or 5th oathed radiant spren.
  5. So just want to be clear from the get go, I am not saying Hoid won't try to help Adolin and Maya bond, nor am I saying Hoid would not take an interesting in Adolin. Just saying that as per the WoB below, Hoid does not take an interest in someone just because they are a radiant, or going to become a radiant. Jeremy (paraphrased) Does Wit specifically treat people differently when he knows they're going to have a spren bond? (E.g. Renarin, Dalinar) Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased) Yes, Wit treats people differently, but it is not because of present or nascent spren bonds. He has an opinion of what each person needs to hear. He isn't always correct in this opinion, but he tries to give people what he thinks they need. In Dalinar's case, he simply has too much respect for the man to be glib. In Renarin's case, he believes that the boy has had more than enough breaking down, and is much more in need of building up. When Worlds Collide 2014 (Aug. 9, 2014) As to his lightweaving, becoming a lightweaver and his feelings on soulcasting (though one of the WoB is not canon yet): Questioner So Hoid has a Cryptic. Brandon Sanderson It is heavily implied that Hoid is trying to get this Cryptic to-- Questioner And Soulcasting in some sense or another transports someone into Shadesmar. So does he no longer need a perpendicularity? Brandon Sanderson So, Hoid has been breaking certain rules along those lines for a long while. I guess he's not breaking any actual rules... He has found, by Stormlight, to do things in ways that others are not using. How about that? Questioner That is excellent. Brandon Sanderson He is looking forward to having a spren bond that will make things like this easier... And, audio recorder, that one is not quite canon yet. The one about Hoid. Emerald City Comic Con 2018 (March 1, 2018) Stormlightning If Hoid could have picked to join any order of the Knights Radiant, regardless of the Oaths he had to swear, just the powers, would he have picked Lightweaver? Brandon Sanderson He would have. Stormlightning Tell me more! Brandon Sanderson Lightweaving matches him very well, he's quite familiar with it and experienced with it. He's very good at using it and he likes it. It's the fulfillment of a long, long quest of his to finally get full access to Lightweaving. Stormlightning Even though he had some sort of Lightweaving? Brandon Sanderson He did have some sort of, yes. He's a very very happy Hoid. FanX 2018 (Sept. 7, 2018) Stormlightning You've talked about how Hoid really appreciates his new Lightweaving abilities, but what about the Soulcasting side of things? Brandon Sanderson So, you'll have to see. Stormlightning Is he excited about that, or does he already have all of that? Brandon Sanderson No, he doesn't have all of that. He knows more than a lot of people do, and knows to be more-- frightened of Soulcasting than others are. Frightened is perhaps the wrong term. Wary. FanX Spring 2019 (April 19, 2019)
  6. So it seems i have been going unintentionally handicapped. I have been so focused on building the characters I have set up, that I have not made any real effort to recruit anyone from any of the other houses. Add to that I plan to make the choice that will alienate 90 percent of the neutral characters lol, and I pretty much going black eagle exclusive. Every map so far has had one empty square where I assume I could have fit another character lol. I do aim to get Shamir because it seems she won't care about the choice, but otherwise looks like pure black eagle. Ironically enough the focus has made my characters pretty powerful. So maybe my accidental handicap turned into a bonus? Only time will tell when I get to the harder maps lol.
  7. Totally respect that. Thank you for understanding!
  8. When did I ever say that? My theory is that members of the village are either part of, or among the leaders of the Set on Scadrial. We have proof that entities are aiding the Set and giving them access to things they would not normally have access to. Whether the entities are the Set, and the Set we know of is their local Scadrial branch (in other words there are Sets on other planets, and there is an ultimate grand poobah somewhere) like Stormlight spoilers Or the entities are helping the Set, and the Set is purely on Scadrial is up in the air. But either situation does not preclude the leaders of the Terris potentially being in the higher echelons of the Set. PrinceGenocide said they viewed Sazed as "prone to mistakes". The definition of fallible is "capable of making mistakes or being erroneous." You stated that "That does not seem like a prevailing attitude basically anywhere" As this is a belief of the Pathian religion, your statement is incorrect. And my theory is there might be more going on in the background.
  9. Got the dark seal! Had to grind Petra a little to make sure her speed was higher than the death knight, but it worked like a charm. Hubert is now a dark mage! So he is going to be an epic debuffer via cutting down the enemy's defense, immobilizing them, and taking 20 percent off of their lives with every attack! Only problem is his magic is so high, he tends to kill them outright lol. Ferdinand is doing awesomely as a brawler. His extra avoid at full HP has made him almost impossible to hit. Dorothea still needs sometime to hit her stride, as I am having her go white magic till dancer to buff people. Linhardt is an epic healer, though I am aiming to make him a heal tank with nosferatu (giving him tomefaire, and white tomefaire, coupled with his crest that occasionally increased the might of his white magic). Bernadetta is starting to come along. Waiting to get her vantage and then I can really open her up.
  10. The Pathian religion does The Set knows a whole lot that they shouldn't know. A whole bunch of years ago, when only Alloy of Law was out, some people thought it was utterly impossible that there could be individuals from other planets giving the Set information and advancements that they shouldn't have access to. Lo and behold, what do we find out? The set has their own faceless immortals, and there is an entity working against Harmony. So if the leaders of the Village really are part of the Set, then why wouldn't they have the same access to the same information? As per Wax's grandmother, it is to prevent the mixing of bloodlines.
  11. No problemo The problem I keep coming back to is the main tenet of the religion is that Wyrn is the voice of god. Sure you could roll the dice and you might get a good ruler, but anytime that ruler does something wrong, you can't vote him or her out. You can't wait for his or her term to come up. Basically you turn "god" into a dictator. All the negatives of dictatorship are amplified and made 100 times worse in a theocracy. Because if you have a problem with the way things are being done, you aren't having a problem with the person, you are having a problem with your god, since the government and religion are one. So long as that individual is the mouthpiece of that religion (and I do not mean figure head like the other religion, I mean full on god's voice on earth), then every action that ruler takes is the religion. Otherwise when and how do you separate it? If Wyrn said yesterday that feeding the poor is a good thing, and then tomorrow says that all Arelons are to be executed, then is Wyrn the voice of god when it suits his subjects? Does Wyrn have to periodically tune his radio to god, and the message gets fuzzy, so sometimes he makes mistakes but hey these things happen? It is pretty explicit to me. Wyrn is their god's voice. Unless they want to say their god is fallible and makes mistakes, then what Wyrn says is their religion. If Wyrn calls his followers to take an evil action, then it is their god calling them to do an evil action. It is their religion calling them to do this evil action. So to me, the religion is then evil. Reformation is all well and good. Changing leaders are all well and good. But as of the time of the novel, given the information we are provided, and the actions that are taken, as far as I am concerned Shu-Dereth is evil.
  12. That is not what you originally said. You said: If you are now saying Renarin would decide to marry someone all on his own to advance the cause, that is an entirely different discussion than Jasnah being callous and caring little what Renarin wants.
  13. No problemo. And I do not think we know enough to presume that their level of knowledge is low, or will always be as such with the inclusion of the heralds, Urithiru, and radiant surges. I do not think we have enough information to presume the level of knowledge regarding chemistry to preclude the possibility. I wish you luck with your theory. Happy to agree to disagree Definitely looking forward to seeing the magitech developed as Roshar moves forward
  14. See, but that is your rationale. That when told a religious figure is the voice of god, you wonder "how do we know you really do?". But as per their belief system, that is holy. You do not question it. To question it is heresy and to be excommunicated (as I already mentioned above). You could have a religion with plenty of good people sprinkled all throughout. Does not change what that religion's doctrine is. Wyrn called for genocide. Wyrn is their god's voice. Their god is calling for people's genocide. if you do not commit the genocide as commanded by your god, then you are committing heresy and will be punished/excommunicated. That is their religion calling for genocide. So that sounds evil to me.
  15. She states: Shadows of Self page 96 "Neither power is evil" she said "It is mixing those powers that is dangerous. Your nature is not your fault, but I cannot help but see it as a sign. Another tyrant in our future, too powerful. It leads to death" So at least the official tag line is feruchemy has to remain pure, and cannot be mixed with allomancy as it can bring about a new lord ruler. Actually we do not know why the Set want full Mistborn. Edwarn certainly wants to figure out Hermalurgy/Medallions so the powers can go to those he thinks "deserves" them or will do the best with them. Not via some genetic lottery. But that does not mean we know the Set's goals regarding Mistborn. As per Wax's grandmother, the reason they want to keep feruchemists separate is a hold over from the Lord Ruler. And you are entitled to your opinion. I wish you luck with your theory! No, Rashek was angry towards Alendi's people because Rashek felt the Terris should rule. When Rashek tapped the Well, and made himself fullborn, he changed his allies among the feruchemists into Kandra, and then used the beads of lerasium to turn some of the rulers of the time to his side. He bred the Terris to prevent another fullborn from popping up to challenge him. The same doctrine the Village is carrying out, through a different process (not interbreeding), but with the same goal. Preventing another "tyrant" from arising. That is the official tag line of the Village at least. I think there might be more going on in the background we do not know. That is a good point. If they see Sazed as fallible, and begin to think they know better, that the before was better, it would give reason for them to work against him. Compounding is used (at this time) to fuel feruchemy, so I see what you mean. So basically if everyone is powerful then no one is powerful. As in they will be the checks and balances for each other? Ferrings as result of them breeding were a surprising result. They didn't know that would happen. Though Wax's grandmother thinks it is still possible to end up with another Tyrant like the Lord Ruler. Maybe she knows something we don't know yet?
  16. Just wanted to ring in on one thing here. In Age of Ultron, Tony did not know Ultron would go out of control, but he definitely knew the possibility. Bruce said as much and warned him. Tony was just charismatic enough to convince Bruce to do it anyway. So Tony did have knowledge that his actions could go wrong, but he felt the pros outweighed the potential cons. He just ended up wrong. Same thing with Peter Parker. Letting a robber with a gun go has some very clear consequences. The robber is free to potentially rob again, and someone potentially get hurt. Peter did not predict that it would be his Uncle, but it does not change that Peter is aware of the potential consequences of his actions by letting the robber go. At the time he was just acting selfish, and bitter which led to a immediate action not truly facing the potential consequences. Conversely there is no way Superman could have known donning the suit would have resulted in Zod coming. So there wasn't a chance to say to himself "hmmm, if I put this on, something bad could happen, but I will do it anyway".
  17. So there is nothing that could be hypothetically provided that would be valid to you to show that Brandon would not change his mind. Gotcha. Thanks! edit: or I should say the purpose of this thread is not to argue whether or not Brandon would change his mind. It is to do a "what if" he did change his mind. Is that correct?
  18. Earlier you mentioned the conversation with Jasnah as being a reason. What do you mean? Also, what would you consider valid evidence that he would not change his mind? What level of proof would be required?
  19. Well we know Jasnah teleporting in with Wit around did not effect him, and he was near her. We also know the oathgates can choose to include or exclude in the transfer. But yeah not going to fight on that hill. I was making a tongue in cheek joke. Think whatever you want about it.
  20. Right, which is clever, but they still run the risk of when an explosion strikes the elsecallers, if an lightweaver is among them, the lightweaver could get caught in that same explosion. If the aim of the skybreakers is the carpet bomb the whole area, killing anyone that is not them, and the lightweavers cannot fly, then there is still going to be a chance the lightweavers are going to get caught in the damage. Hence the DnD joke comment about how illusions can't stop a fireball. edit: if you notice, earlier I wrote how the lightweavers have a pretty diverse range to draw on. I enjoy illusionists. I was just mentioning how illusions tend to be handled in DnD. Going straight single target attack is going to get you no where. Explosive area effect will. edit 2: LOL just had a hilarious picture in my mind. Lightweaver hiding among elsecallers. Skybreakers come in for a carpet bomb run. Elsecallers teleport out of dodge. Lightweaver realizes he or she is now alone in the path of destruction and goes "oh crap" lol
  21. I could see that. Though they would still run the risk of getting killed in the attacks towards the elsecallers, and stonewards.
  22. But as I mentioned earlier, what Wyrn says is divine edict from their God's lips.
  23. As pointed out by Vikor, the post is regarding a battle between radiants.
  24. As vikor on page 1 pointed out, and I assume is the case, it is a knights radiant civil war. As in only radiants are involved. So making an illusion of a civilian would call even more attention to the civilian as they would be out of place. lightweavers cannot fly. The implication of this post is last radiant order standing. So skybreakers flying over and carpet bombing everything would still be effective and still catch the lightweavers.
  25. How do you get a second dark seal? I thought you could only get one. Edit: Nvm, I misread. When they said only one person could go that tree, I assumed only one seal. Now I see you can get more than one. Thanks!
