@TwiLyghtSansSparkles, @Darkness Ascendant - I was starting to find this funny but twi brought me back down to earth. While I don't agree with LDS theology, they don't agree with mine. This does not give me, or an LDS person, the right to belittle or mock the others faith. @Deliiiiiightful - Christianity was founded in mass revelation, much like Judaism was; this is natural as the God of Christianity is the same God as that of Judaism; we merely believe that the Messiah has come in the person of Yeshua (Iesus in Greek, Jesu in Latin and Jesus in English). While I won't go too deep for risk of letting my (quite natural) biases take the fore, the early history of Christianity is fascinating. The success of the faith in the face of immediate and ongoing persecution was frankly astonishing. But yes, Christianity was founded on mass revelation - first the miracles of Yeshua himself, which were extremely public (so much so that a later rabbinical source decrying him, claimed his work was sorcery, but wasn't willing to claim it was fake). This was followed by his appearance post-crucifixion to some 500 witnesses (who went on to found the church) and other major mass revelations (as in Pentecost). Whats interesting too in the founding of Christianity, is that the Apostles gained no material or temporal benefit from the church. They one and all remained poor, usually as itinerant missionaries and often, like Paul (a tentmaker), resorting to a profession to sustain themselves while spreading the gospel. They remained poor, single, and were one at a time tortured and executed. It's fascinating history Contrast this with the founders of Mormonism and Islam, who both gained significant wealth and power from their teachings (Mohammed conquered all of Arabia, and was de facto emperor of Arabia, Smith gained a devoted following with whom he founded cities, gained political position and led a militia), and who both had many wives. (Mohammed had 11, Joseph Smith between 20 and 40).

But almond milk is delicious! Mind you, that might be because I'm used to it - normal milk tastes weird to me now. -
Compliment the person above you!

It's entirely possible that you've developed lactose intolerance. This is something that I noticed, oh, five years ago? A bit more? If it is lactose intolerance, there are some steps you can take to make life less annoying. Lactose intolerance is when your stomach stops producing the enzyme lactase. Lactase breaks down the lactose sugar into galactose and glucose, which are then digested by the body. In the absence of the lactase enzyme, lactose is passed un-separated to the bacteria of the gut. They then break it down, but produce a whole bunch of nasty stuff as a side-effect. Symptoms usually, but not always, include bloating, severe and painful cramping, gas, and diarrhea. Lactose intolerance can be treated by taking the lactase enzyme as a supplement with food. The supplemental enzyme lactase can be bought in most pharmacies over the counter. Whenever you eat food containing lactose, you take the enzyme at the start of your meal (taken too far in advance, or without food, and the enzyme will denature and be ineffective). Generally, lactose intolerance is a matter of scale. The more lactose you consume, the worse your symptoms are (for that reason, even with the enzyme supplement, I drink almond milk instead of milk, and avoid having too much dairy). Some people with lactose intolerance also are not fully intolerant; their body produces a small amount of lactase, sufficient for a small amount of lactose, but not for a large dose. -

@TwiLyghtSansSparkles - with respect to weight gain, I'm in something of the same boat - trying to gain and wound up losing. Still, it's important to remember: calories in - calories out = weight change. You want to gain weight? Track your calories. Consume more than you're expending. Want to lose weight? Track your calories. Consume less than you're expending. It's pretty simple (if annoying to actually do). -
Love in the Time of Headlessness and Also Sudden Death

It suits the Irish folklore, I think. Mind you, if Dooly is one of the Faen court, then it could simply have been made of iron. Or even both, an iron cross. Of course, then people would wonder if she was German, and had relatives who fought in the World Wars... Feel free to steal! But you're the author - generally your own ideas would flow more naturally and read better- 10 replies

@TwiLyghtSansSparkles - that was one of the funniest things I've read in a while. I'm still grinning at the bus stop. Well done. Very well done. Nice touches all throughout. (Irish myth so catholicized - the necklace was a cross?) Not gonna lie, pretty sure Cora is a Banshee now. Might be able to swing a sequel based on her haunting the school with her shrieks; deaf boy falling for her instantly. Everyone else falling to their knees in terror. Meeting the boys family would be a good scene.- 10 replies

Because the ultimate goal in Buddhism is the cessation of personal existence, yes? Nirvana as either complete annihilation, or the merging of the consciousness with the fabric of the universe (and thus the complete cessation of 'self'). This aligns well with Ruin, save that it's personal and not corporate - so the average Buddhist would want Ruination of themselves, but wouldn't try to force it on the world.

@bleeder - be happy for them, and don't sweat it. For the record, two of my siblings are married and my closest brother just got engaged (I'm to be the best man!) So it's a common boat. Our time will come. Don't sweat it, don't rush it. (Both are much easier said then done) -

Well, don't get your tonsils out unless you need to. They're a useful part of your immune system. But the knees are probably a nothing thing. Work through them if possible. If it causes pain or limits mobility, then see a doctor ASAP. If not, then chat with your doc on your checkup -

There's a bunch of theories, but harmless gas bubbles is the most popular/likely. -
@Quiver archery is fun. I'm a backyard archer, and not bad, but getting professional training / help makes a world of difference. If you can commit to it, I strongly recommend getting archery training.

Please note, as a Canadian who has only ever once been to the US South, I use 'ya'll' primarily humorously or ironically. Also, potatoes work with rice, provided they are sufficiently saucy.

@Slowswift - does it hurt? Does it feel significatly uncomfortable? Otherwise, don't worry, it's completely normal. My everything does the snap crackle pop from time to time, and has since when I was younger than you. You should hear when I intentionally crack my joints. (Most cracking is the harmless bursting of nitrogen bubbles, and is nothing to worry about). In other news, I've been feeling kinda low and down today. Just .... bleh. Mixture of sick, tired, end of reading week (so back to classes Monday), and end of valentines week (which was also the week of my anniversary with my ex. So double whammy for the single dude). I could use a hug. -
Seriously? You guys don't believe in potatoes with rice? Ya'll need to eat some delicious SEA curries. Had a lovely Malaysian curry last week - actually had three lovely Malaysian curries last week, lamb beef and chicken. The lamb and chicken both had potatoes in the curry, and of course I ate them over rice. And it was delicious.

@Elenion /hug Two things now: thing one, don't blame yourself for random happenings. Things happen. In this case, they're the things that happen in a high school romantic comedy. I'm so sorry. But not gonna lie, it's kinda funny. Second thing: does second girl know you're interested? Cuz that changes things. In my own case, I really need a hug. You might wanna wear a hazmat suit though. Just got home from work, and feeling a LOT sicker than I thought I was -
Woo! So I'm a Ferring now But which one....

So I went skiing with my my two closest friends yesterday, then dinner at one of my friends place and played Helldivers 3 player co-op on his TV, while drinking delicious tea with honey, late into the evening. That was a pretty good Feb 14th. -
@TwiLyghtSansSparkles - I get you. And I'm with you; mostly. In other words, I think that is good and healthy and we need to see more of it, but that Frodo and Sam are not part of that, and shouldn't be used as an example. Remember also that Sam leaves the woman he is infatuated with, and in his mind all his opportunity with her, to follow Frodo. And when he returns (after the whole Scouring of the Shire), asking her out is 'the bravest thing he ever did'. What's so poignant about this is it really emphasizes Frodo's wartime experience. Same comes home, cleans things up, and lives happily ever after with the woman he loves and a big bouncing family. Frodo, however is broken by the war. He never fully recovers from the mental and emotional ills. Whereas all his friends are able to enjoy their homes, are built up and strengthened by their experience, poor Frodo is broken so profoundly he cannot live in the Shire anymore. It's a beautiful and tragic analogy of PTSD, the mental toll of war and how it affects people differently - almost a cry for understanding of the soldier who never really left Ypres, or the Somme. (There is, however, a decent argument to be made for Frodo being gay, but again it's a distraction from the main points, which are subtle).

On the one hand, I kinda see that, but on the other it really bothers me in this case. Becuase it draws to something I've mentioned before in other threads; that to our society everything is about romance. Romantic love is glorified, while platonic love is ignored and shuffled off to the sidelines. We, societally, have an unhealthy obsession with sex and romance, which (while important!) are not everything as they are made out to be by our society. Tolkien (who, by the way, is actually good at romance. See Of Beren and Luthien for a fantastic romance, and one of the most badchull female leads ever), decided to write a lot of platonic relationships and love into LOTR, and to focus on them. The book is filled with them - Merry/Pippin are boyhood friends who's friendship and love deepen through adversity. Legolas and Gimli overcome their racism and cultural divides to become incredible friends; each losing their racist beliefs as they do so. Frodo and Sam overcome their class divide (Frodo is rich, educated, landed gentry, Sam a lower-class gardener and farmer) to form a deep, lasting and abiding platonic love. In each case their friendship defines their characters and their platonic relationship becomes the most important relationship in each of their lives. While I have no problems with shipping in general, nor for people bringing in their own perspectives to a work of art, in this case shipping the characters serves to obscure the true nature of their relationship, and half the point of the novel. Because a huge theme of LOTR is platonic love, friendship and camaraderie in the face of incredible diversity.

@KnightRadiant - Dude. You get to study LOTR in English? This is awesome. Also, Tom Bombadil is storming cool - go deep and you'll do well @A Budgie - please don't ship Sam and Frodo. If you do, you're completely missing the point of their relationship! They're all about the platonic love and bond formed fighting in the trenches. These guys are a fantastic reflection of Tolkien's time in the trenches of WWI. Don't try to take that away from him/them

The Official Thread of Relationships
Erunion replied to Curious Anamaximder's topic in General Discussion
@Deliiiiiightful - there's also a lot of extremely unhealthy social and cultural pressure to push people into relationships. People are told they can't be complete without a partner. People are told that life is all about sex. People are told that being a virgin is something to be ashamed/embarrassed about. People are told that if they don't date/have a partner they're a loser. There's a lot of nasty, unhealthy social expectations going around. And so people feel the need to be in a relationship, even if they don't really like/love this person. (Plus, being lonely sucks and a lot of people will settle for anything as long as they're not lonely. We forget, or don't realize, that being in the wrong relationship is much more painful, and much more damaging in the long run, than being lonely). -
