"Speak again the ancient oaths..." Easier said than done, Your Almighty-ness. The Ideals of the Knights Radiant are one of the most fascinating and essential aspects of Surgebinding, yet with only a fifth of the Stormlight Archive published, we still don't have information about many of the oaths. The First Ideal is the same for all orders, and at least one order didn't even speak any oaths after the first. Clearly there is a wide range of speculation to be had. As I've seen a great deal of discussion about Ideals, I thought it would be convenient to have a place we can discuss our guesses at length. A place to enter guesses about what oaths an Order might swear, or possibly details on how the Ideals function at their core. Myself, I am currently espousing two possible oaths. WoR spoilers follow: Those are my ideas. I would really like to know what other people think of these potential Ideals, and I would love to see other suggestions for the Dustbringers, Skybreakers, and the other Orders! It's time to speak again the ancient oaths, people!

The article on Coppermind makes this claim, but I do not actually have a direct WoB. Good catch, I need to be more careful about making statements without confirming my sources.

I have also gotten this error. I don't think I'd noticed before, but I can't remember ever getting this error after quoting someone. EDIT: somewhat ironically, I got the error after making this post. So apparently it can affect posts that include quotes.

Emperor's Soul: Devotion's Body
Kobold King replied to Oudeis's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
It's been a while since I read The Emperor's Soul, so I may be forgetting pertinent details here. But is it possible that soulstone comes from a different land, and it's much more powerful when used in its original region?- 41 replies

Crazy theory on Interlude:Stick [possible spoilers]
Kobold King replied to Funkylemon's topic in Stormlight Archive
Thanks for the info. I also agree that Rysn will most likely get a book--she's been in both book's interludes and has a connection to a creature that has a connection to Stormlight. But that's a topic for another thread, I suppose. Readers, back to your regularly scheduled Stickiness. -
Oh, OK. Your technical explanation is logical and makes sense, and the WoB seems to confirm it. Thanks for the help!

This thread isn't really a theory so much as it a questioned assumption. When I read the Mistborn Trilogy, I thought I understood how the Three Metallic Arts worked in relation to one another. Hemalurgy is end-negative, and is thus the force of Ruin. Feruchemy, being end-neutral, is the force of Preservation, as nothing is either gained or lost in a Feruchemical reaction. Allomancy is the power that results from both entities coming together. And end-positive art, Allomancy could not be powered by either of the Shards on Scadrial--they must work together in order to create. These were my assumptions, at least. I think that the above system is logical, but I have frequently seen people on the forums discussing how Allomancy is the power of Preservation and Feruchemy is the result of both Shards interacting. I feel like I must be missing something, possibly a WoB or a direct quote from the series I missed. Does anyone have definitive info on how the Metallic Arts relate to the Shards?

She has a point, akasketch. Being a Zucchini is a noble Calling, almost as noble as that of an Oatmeal Cookie. As your Babsk, I can teach you how to be the best Zucchini you can be.

Crazy theory on Interlude:Stick [possible spoilers]
Kobold King replied to Funkylemon's topic in Stormlight Archive
Jasnah and "Taln"? Has this actually been confirmed? As far as I knew those were both mere speculation, but I'd love to be wrong! -
This thread has been Silent. We should Gather more puns...
-
Remember that Cryptics don't only gather around potential Lightweavers. We know from one of the chapter bumps in WoK that there were Cryptics prowling around in Taravangian's hospitals.

Crazy theory on Interlude:Stick [possible spoilers]
Kobold King replied to Funkylemon's topic in Stormlight Archive
Six Years Previously I am a stick. I am a stick, I am a stick. I am a stick. I am a stick! The revelations shown to us through Book 8's flashbacks are overwhelming. -
Adonalsium - is that really the best name?
Kobold King replied to Viper's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I suppose it's also possible that the Dragon was speaking metaphorically. I've occasionally heard people say "So-and-so has Christ's own patience" without literally proclaiming the subject to be Jesus. That said, I think the Dragon was probably speaking literally in this case. -
I like it. It has the "feel" of a KR Ideal. The Pious/Guiding Order is the Order of the Bondsmiths, by the way. Maybe someone should make a thread for general ideal-guessing...

Casting sounds like an awesome name for it! I wouldn't worry about the similarity to "Soulcasting". The word is applicable and cool, so why let a vague similarity to a completely unrelated system get in your way? I confess I don't have any good ideas for how the magic is accessed. Swimmingly has a pretty cool (if macabre) idea above, so it's hard to top that. Wait! I did not say I didn't have an idea. I said I didn't have a good idea. I still have a suggestion. Maybe in order to Cast properly, you must build up an affinity towards metal over a period of time. A Caster-in-training must spend years as some kind of smith, "forging" a connection to metals before they can use it for the magic. Casters often build up such a strong connection to metals that they begin to personify it, becoming a very strange and separate part of society accused of cultish practices. If I were you I'd take Swimmingly's system over mine (though mine does fir in with Realmatics more easily ). I simply remain dedicated towards offering inferior ideas for a better price.

This is actually a pretty interesting idea, especially considering how quickly he seems to descend into complete madness through WoR. It wouldn't surprise me if Stormlight is capable of doing this, although I think that a purely psychological explanation is also possible.
-
I imagine that Allomancy could be measured through ratios--"metal burned:energy produced". While "energy produced" might be problematic to measure (how do you measure Soothing or Rioting?) I think you could get a good idea of energy production by observing a Pewterarm lifting various objects and calculating his limits. Once you've calculated the force produced by burning a metal, you can then experiment with Hemalurgy to find out how much potential force is lost in the spiking process. Feruchemy, by definition, does not produce or reduce Investiture, but figures could be computed concerning "how much" of an attribute could be stored and at what rate.

Crazy Theory-Odiums Victory and Series Future
Kobold King replied to Zionite's topic in Stormlight Archive
This is an interesting idea, but I'm inclined to doubt it. The fact that Series 2 features Braize doesn't necessarily mean that Odium wins--it could simply mean that we will see villain POVs set there, or perhaps some main characters will voluntarily journey there specifically to kill Odium. There are a vast number of possibilities that can be derived from that statement. And while I like the general concept of Radiants fighting an underground revolution against Rayse, in contrast to their previous out-in-the-open position, I think the fact that Brandon Sanderson has told that kind of story twice now makes this unlikely. Mistborn: The Final Empire and Steelheart were both about revolutionaries struggling against unstoppable tyrants, so I doubt that he will tread the same path for Stormlight 5-10. So far, the series has been progressing far more rapidly than I think anyone could have guessed (can't give details because this isn't the WoR board). I think the next few books will likely contain revelations that will take everyone by surprise and lay a completely unforeseen foundation for the second series. That won't stop us from doing our best to predict them though. -
Crazy theory on Interlude:Stick [possible spoilers]
Kobold King replied to Funkylemon's topic in Stormlight Archive
The following quote: This scene represents the pinnacle of Stick's story arc. All of a sudden, a fiery-headed antagonist attempts to tell the Stick it is not a Stick. And in an emotional soul-searching climax, Stick learns exactly what it is. It is and always will be a stick.I cried. Brandon Sanderson's characters always have such impacting arcs. Always. No exceptions. -
To be fair, attempting to draw exactly what the book described without Shallan's Memory would likely push the artist to a psychological breakdown. But I see your point.

I was half-expecting to see a thinly veiled plagiarism of Allomancy, but this looks novel, original, and exciting! In some ways it kind of reminds me of what I'd imagined the Surge of Cohesion to be like (if you're familiar with Stormlight). As I've thus already thought about potential applications for this general sort of power, here are a few suggestions. Why stop with shields? The ability to instantly make a shield out of a coin would be pretty cool, but there are so many other uses. Why not instantly craft a weapon like a sword? Or step off the battlefield for community service like reforging tools without a fire. Alloys of metals could be a lot easier to make if you could mix them with a touch. Granted, the loss of mass could potentially be a problem, depending on how much was lost. But I think this is a really cool idea and I'd love to see it in action. If I may ask, does the magic system have a name yet?

No, you're thinking about recursivespren. They're very different things. EDIT: I just wanted to point out that your post attracted quite a number of emojispren.

SUPER HUGE WARNING: Don't take your stick for granted!
Kobold King replied to Lightflame's topic in Stormlight Archive
Hoid is Peter the Postman, a character referenced in Oh, the Things You Can Think. You see, Peter the Postman crosses the ice once every day, and on Saturdays twice. Peter the Postman is confronted by a number of dangers, including slippery ice and sinister looking walruses, in order to deliver mail to what seems to be a small village. This is similar to Hoid, who constantly travels the Cosmere delivering help and cryptic information to protagonists. The ice therefore represents Shadesmar. The theme of the book is "things you can think", thus confirming that the whole book takes place in the Cognitive Realm. Oh, the Places You'll Go therefore takes place in the Physical Realm, and Green Eggs and Ham takes place in the Spiritual. From this we can make several assumptions. The walruses Peter encounters are the 17th Shard, trying to catch up with him. This indicates that the Cat in the Hat is the recipient of the Letter, which further implies that Horton the Elephant is Adonalsium (the Grinch, obviously, is Odium). I will conclude my analysis by asserting my confidence that the entire collected works of Brandon Sanderson are the greatest works of Dr. Seus fanfiction ever written. I thank Lightsworn Panda and Armless writer for opening my eyes to these truths.- 6 replies

I love this. I wonder if Scadrial somehow has an easier access to worldhopping techniques than other worlds do. After all, we know of at least two others, Demoux and the Terriswoman.
