  1. "You can always do a bit better" isn't really an issue for non-living objects, though, as we know that all you have to do to make a permanent stamp for those is get past a certain threshold: if the stamp isn't rejected from the object within X hours (I forget the exact number at the moment, if it's given in the book), then it will last for an indefinite amount of time. P.S. To add on to the "Shai must be a polymath" pile, she should also by your system by a window maker and a fire-place installer and floor-crafter...
  2. This particular assumption I've always found dubious. Are we to conclude that Shai is an expert desk-maintaner and pottery-maker, then? I think it more reasonable to say that the creation of an entirely new work of art that's meant to be in a specific artist's style is the unusual case that requires extra expertise, rather than the requirement of that expertise being the norm.
  3. Eh, in that case they can just compound an existing goldmind, I'd guess.
  4. It's unclear if Feruchemy will be required for the FTL, as Brandon has taken to calling it "Allomantic FTL" as of late. Also, while we've had some strong hints that this "mechallomancy" will be involved in FTL/space travel, it hasn't been confirmed outright. Various WoBs about this in the FTL section of this post.
  5. I'm sorry to report that there is stuff outside that thread. :/ You know how it is, signing reports and whatnot being buried in various places. Especially from the Firefight tore. A good scrape of the Events sub forum will probably pick up quite a few of the remainder.
  6. *totally not a shameless bump and no I did not "save" this reply just so I could bump the thread later* A good way to phrase it, I think. Maybe you should step into my office to discuss the mechanism further...
  7. Before asking that question, there's the more fundamental question of whether something can be destroyed outright by the mere act of Forging it. Shai Forges a door into being rotten and on the verge of collapse, but doesn't Forge it into a pile of splinters. If you want a slightly less complete-destruction example to talk about, I'd suggest the pit in the floor that Shai creates underneath her bed. In this case, some rather large amount of structural integrity and matter has been taken away from the floor, but the "floor" as a coherent whole hasn't been fully destroyed.
  8. An interesting theory, but I doubt that's how it works. For one, the initial formulation for time bubbles as written in the books, before Peter got all "science says not to do that, Brandon", included time bubbles causing red/blue-shift, implying rather strongly an actual effect on time. So far as "jostling" goes, it is a bit of an open question exactly how it works. But we've got two different quotes in the OP that both talk very directly about momentum/energy being lost when you transition out of a speed bubble. I suppose you could model this as a secondary effect of the pressure change, but it seems less likely. You'd probably just have been better off posting a new topic to ask/theorize your questions, but this is something of a catch-all thread, so I don't exactly blame you.
  9. @Moogle Recall that we got a Breath vs. Stormlight WoB from Chicago, when that gets transcribed.
  10. I actually didn't have time to read the whole OP (at work at the moment... ), I just noticed that you weren't referencing that WoB and thought you might want to have all the facts at your disposal. So that wasn't in response to anything in particular. I'm usually a bit less passive-aggressive when I'm posting WoBs in response to specific things.
  11. Have a WoB. Source:
  12. That compounding works for non-Feruchemists because Feruchemists can "unlock" their metalminds is still speculation (very very persuasive spectulation, I'd say ), but we do have a WoB that non-Feruchemists can compound others' metalminds under the right conditions. There's also one that says that there's a way to get a non-powered person to access a metalmind, which also suggets "unlocking". EDIT: NINJAAAAA!!!
  13. Sorry if I misled you then. I wouldn't think that Weiry would miss such a question, though, so I guess I misremembered. -Unless Weiry dismissed the answer as a simple rehashing of known knowledge when he was listening to the recording, not realizing its import... ---Okay, now I am trolling a bit. But only a bit...
  14. I doubt you'll believe me, but I promise I'm not trolling here. I have a vague recollection of such a question being asked, but I'm honestly unsure if it actually was, and can't pin down the context as I think more on it. It really doesn't help that I was ill and sleep-deprived at the signing, I'll admit. :/
  15. To add to your personal hell delight, if I recall correctly someone asked a question about the mists fueling Allomancy in Chicago. I'm not 100% on that recollection, though, so don't quote me on it/get really mad if you listen to 4 hours of audio and then don't hear it.
  16. I'm recalled to that answer Brandon gave in Chicago about how the stars had to be aligned just right for Sazed to actually be able to take up two shards like that.
  17. Perhaps a reread of Warbreaker is in order on my part, but I don't recall Lifesense being quite that narrow. People looking at you is certainly one case where it triggers, but I seem to recall several instances of it working without anything resembling "looking at" going on. Doesn't Vivienee get all "life sensy" on just crowds in general after she gets her Breath-stash? EDIT: Oops, misread you and thought you were saying that lifesense only let you know when people were looking at you. To address the broader point, myself I'd guess that very very ephemeral "connections" are formed between people on a Spiritual level when they look at each other, and Lifesense is attuned to that.
  18. Hm. I suppose we suffer a simple conceptual disconnect, then, as I disagree.
  19. First of all, I'm sorry for offending you by saying "obfuscating semantics". The ninja-face was meant to soften the blow a bit, but clearly that failed so I apologize. -- Regarding the topic at hand: Let me try one more time to see if an example might bring our views into alignment: How would you describe the way that a hemalurgic spike interacts with the spiritweb of a recipient? Myself, I would say that the spike grafts some stolen piece of soul onto the recipient, not that the recipient is "connected" to a piece of soul that's "connected" in turn to the spike. Hemalurgy "rips off a piece of one person's soul and spikes it somebody else", which all sounds quite direct to me.
  20. Heresy!!!!! *Ahem* Mebbe. Anchoring is really just one aspect of the problem, though, and at the very least I'd be interested to see what other space-time violating allomantic interaction Brandon will be able to come up with to get the trick done; as it looks either like we need some fundamentally new metals or like "mechallomancy" needs to be able to twist existing metals in really funky ways to get the job done any other way. -Note: I'm biased.
  21. Such talk smells of obfuscating semantics to me. I'm sure we can bend over backwards to say all relationships are technically "connections", but that's really not all that helpful. If I have a power screwdriver that's plugged into the wall, I'd say it's "connected" to its power source. If I have one with a battery, I'd say that the screwdriver has its own power source. Yes both are a matter of sending some electrons down some wires to make things go whirr, but I think we can all agree that the Screwdriver::Wall-socket relationship is of a very different kind from the Screwdriver::Battery relationship. Regarding the ability to take Breath away, I don't see that as really mattering all that much. I'm talking about how the level/way that it interacts with its holder while it's there, not about whether it has to be there. --- Re: "Mere" Mainly I was juxtaposing the somewhat surface-level concept of a connection with the more in-depth idea of full integration. I don't have a problem with "connections" going deep, but I'm also not going to really buy the idea that Kaladin's relationship with Syl is on the same level of "togetherness" (for lack of a better word I can think of) as Vasher's relationship with his oodles of Breath, or his Divine Breath.
  22. I don't see any need to get fundamentally new clarification on anchoring. Whatever Brandon's past statements on the matter, he was quite definitive this last Friday; a little digging into the specifics may be in order, but I certainly don't expect him to do an about face on the topic when it sounds like he's already written a scene about bubble frames of reference in an AoL-era book that's already submitted.
  23. @Shardcellist Ah, I see now; my apologies for misunderstanding you about Breath. I find, however, that I still disagree with this clarified formulation. I find it highly suspect to discuss Breaths as if they are so very separate from the people/objects that they, by all appearances, fully inhabit. The Breath of a 1-Breath Nalthian is simply a part of their everyday soul: similarly, I would say/guess that the Breaths of a 500-breath Awakener are all similarly tightly integrated with his self. So I can't say I approve of saying that the relationship between the Awakener and their Breaths is a "mere" connection, rather than a nearly full integration. Unless you mean to describe such integrations as merely kinds of connections, in which case our conversation might have to be about how to go about defining/limiting what a "connection" is.
  24. It is new. Contradicting our previous understanding of how it works, actually, and thus the tone of shock and surprise from me when Brandon said it. Bubbles anchored by bond: Charitable interpretations leave us to conclude that Brandon was talking about the long-term case in this older WoB, or assuming a bubble that was intersecting the ground where his new WoB/scenario assumes that it isn't or something. --- Regardless, Brandon already told us how the bubble figures out what "still" is:
