  1. Just imagine me at 13 or 14 and doing a hostile takeover of a Yugioh forum. (That did happen.) That is WAY more recent than I imagined I would use the status updates. Wild. I guess it makes sense. My forum time decreased a huge amount once we did the Discord server.
  2. Oh, indeed, you certainly cannot do a slower conversation over a week like that. For sure. Forums are best with longer, more deliberate posts over a longer time It's just here, like this specific conversation would be way simpler in a Discord channel, for example. Yeah, it'd be one of those things where if I'm agreeing someone, I'd just give it an upvote. Lmao, as if I remember. At least judging by the date it couldn't be the quantum exam the Monday after I drove to Utah to visit my girlfriend at the time. That one was an exam where I got a 75 and I totally deserved it. I think I got back home at like 3am...
  3. See like this is a great message that you really don't need to quote and ping someone, where the thing being quoted is longer than the response xD (You're of course welcome to do so, just illustrating my point.)
  4. Wild, I used status updates here much? Huh. Totally forgot about that. Surely it wasn't it much. Discord is fun. Frankly, many of you just use the forums like a chat room, it's not that different. I much prefer it. Much easier and faster. It is easy to spend a lot of time on it though.
  5. Yeah well, normal forum threads don't have bajillions of short messages
  6. Sure, but I personally just check threads if I'm interested in it. Still, there's nothing quite as annoying as a looooong quote with the most nothing response. Thanks, this makes reading the topic awful xD I realize that, but also, I think that looks terrible. It looks wrong, like it's a mistake. Back in MY day you pressed Reply and it opened a completely different window and you didn't have a rich text editor. You had to just know what the BBCode would render as! Yeah the forum culture stuff is interesting. Every few years the entire group of people here or Discord is different, and the vibe is totally different. Don't worry, my subjective opinions are the only true standard, and are 100% correct all the time! I'd say this is because I am getting older and more crotchety, but I honestly was like this as a teenager too--when I starting running forums, actually, which is more than half of my life at this stage.
  7. Because it's just making the thread longer. If I'm responding to a thread and there's no other posts, the thing I am referring to is obvious. It's just adding vertical height for no reason. It's very interesting how forum culture has changed. 15 years ago this was very standard. These days, everything is quoted, even if it's a massive post, and the response is a single line. If it's been a while, and it's not obvious what could be referred to, then sure, I'd quote or multiquote, but I like my responses compact and readable.
  8. I just don't get it. Even people older than me, have they never had a customer service job where you accidentally say "Ma'am" to a guy with really long hair? I have! It's mortifying! Pronouns are super practical and useful! Sigh.
  9. Oh yeah, I wholeheartedly agree, I'm just saying you'd think anti-woke idiots would at least understand the utility in this clear situation where it is obviously useful. Unfortunately, hatred is very blinding. I regularly get comments on Shardcast complaining about the pronouns on the overlay. Every single one who complains has just the dumbest arguments ever. I'd love to give people benefit of the doubt, but it's just "I think trans people / people different from me are icky". That's it.
  10. We have lots of practice with anti-woke trolls. I'm sure the script would be that once we called them out on it, they would call us intolerant and then think they've won, believing that this whole "pronoun" stuff is silly. God forbid you would want to know how to refer to someone in a text based medium where you have no clue what they look like...
  11. Ah yeah. The attack helicopter "joke" is a very old one. I found it funny a decade ago when I thought it was people being silly, not people trashing on trans people.
  12. Yeah, there's no way you're not a troll if you insist those are totally your pronouns but you hadn't thought about how they would function in practice. Goodbye.
  13. Ah, yeah, that'd do it
  14. The Coppermind one (a site which we operate) goes through the end of the book. I'm not quite sure what you're viewing that makes that not displayed. It's been (essentially) done since 2019. Are you on some ancient Time Machine setting on the Coppermind? Stormlight Fandom has essentially only one editor, and is very out of date.

  16. Oh man, there's just a few WoBs we haven't gone through yet, so now we are doing so! We are going through WoBs from the second half of 2025, going through Nexus WoBs. Today, Brandon just spoils the end of Horneater, and we discuss critical characters like Daggon and Tukks, and spiritual watersheds. This episode we have Eric (Chaos), Ian (Weiry), Evgeni (Argent), David (Windrunner), and Bonnie (Cosmeregirl)! This episode does have some brief discussion of Ghostbloods 1 readings. We also discuss a weird WoB first, and the link to that one is here: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/545-celsius-232-2025/#e16902 Thumbnail art is the Horneater Peaks by the incredible Anthony Avon, for the Cosmere RPG: https://bsky.app/profile/anthonyavonart.bsky.social/post/3lusj6tnewc2q 0:00:00 Introductions 0:04:04 "Pikemetal"? 0:10:10 Koloss in Era 3 0:12:33 Redheads and Horneater Ending 0:22:06 Hoid in Shadows for Silence 0:34:35 Hoid's wife 0:39:01 Crossover Characters in Era 3 0:50:04 Galactic Stalemate, Shards or People? 0:55:30 Shades and Luhel Bonds 1:03:34 Tukks lore 1:10:28 Placing Perpendicularities 1:26:12 Ghostbloods and Retribution 1:34:16 Did Adonalsium Relinquish Its Power? 1:39:48 Is Hoid a Cognitive Shadow? 2:09:21 Shard Intent vs. Vessel 2:17:29 Who's That Cosmere Character If you like our content, support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/17thshard Purchase merch here! https://store.17thshard.com/ For discussion, theories, games, and news, come to https://www.17thshard.com Come talk with us and the community on the 17th Shard Discord: https://discord.gg/17thshard Want to learn more about the cosmere and more? 17. What's different from this and cosmeremaps.com? Your initial post didn't make it clear. It is cool, though very similar from a cursory look.
  18. No need to apologize, but yeah, the rules actually do allow for topic necroing in some cases, so just sense, "Is this reasonable?"
  19. Seems fine, stress less about this.

  21. Sure, my rebuttal would just be that that sounds like a story you tell people who doubt. "Trust me, someone totally saw this, you're way more blessed if you just believe it rather than wanting evidence" is not very compelling to me, personally. I can see, at the very least, why it was a useful story to tell in that respect. The existence of a story like this makes the text feel far less divine and much more human-constructed. And same with all of this stuff trying to make emotional pleas, like you said, to make a compelling point. Like, I agree that religion and faith isn't about dispassionate logic, so that makes some degree of sense, but... If it were true, I wouldn't have to believe in it. The evidence should be strong enough without me being biased to agree. In the last year someone tried to convince me magic was real and there are actual spells that can be cast, but all the effects were... really debatable at best? (It didn't help that the book they linked immediately tried to use jargon with infinity and quantum mechanics to make it seem reasonable.) I did not find "I cast a spell and then months later, good things happened and that was my intent with the spell" to be compelling. Sure, maybe, or maybe because you already believe that the spell works you see patterns to match to fit with that, ignoring weeks of it not working until you spotted something that fit. Of course, telling compelling stories is a great way for people to find meaning in things, and that is fair. I don't know if a story alone could ever be enough for me to decide if there's anything supernatural. This kind of got me rambling about my previous response of "why I don't believe" than anything else, so apologies on that.
  22. Others have talked about the hidden assumption you've placed in the question, so I'll answer the question, "Why don't you believe in God?" I don't really understand why, if God exists, that He needs to be so hidden from empirical examination. Not to assume your personal beliefs, of course, but let's say someone believes in the global flood story of Noah, as many people do. If a global flood story was true, where is it in the geologic column? We should be able to tell, Yes, this is when this occurred historically, we can see evidence of old civilizations collapsing at this big boundary. If animals radiated out from a singular point after such a catastrophe, we should see that pattern matched in ecology in distribution of animals. We should see genetic bottlenecks in... basically everything, even bacteria, under such a cataclysm, and we should be able to identify that bottleneck occurring at the same too, too. There are empirical things that we should all be able to observe and all agree that, hey, something big happened at this point in time. That'd be very compelling to me, and I'd be more than happy to accept that. Instead, none of those things are there, and there are tons of reasons that the flood is fully percluded by the data. Now, of course, plenty believe this story is not literal, and that's super fair. You can certainly argue that reasonably. I'm just saying, if a religious text matched what we could see very accurately, that would be very persuasive to me! I've had an LDS member tell me that any evidence of God's existence or influence cannot ever be empirically verified, so that's a pointless exercise. What? That seems wild to me. Can we not find archaeology to support the stories to see whether they happened? I would like to know! If God nuked an ancient city with divine smiting, we should be able to find markers of this. But let's even up the ante more. Let's say God is real, and there is a true religion. Let's say that worship makes you, essentially, into something like a DnD cleric. Said worshipper can go into a hospital and start curing cancer, one after another. We can all see it and verify it. It can be repeatable. Nice. So we could agree God exists, and there is a true religion. Does that mean people would worship that God? To me, belief in God is very different from worship. The "well if we knew God existed, that'd take away our free will" argument seems very weak when lots of people in the Hebrew Bible knew God existed and very much broke commandments, disobeyed, and were not Godly people. People would still choose all the time. What's the problem? It comes across as an excuse the fact that... as we discover more and more about the world, the magical/supernatural answer never seems to be the correct one. That doesn't mean the magic doesn't exist, but it sure seems strangely elusive if it's supposed to be all around. I don't know. I write fantasy novels. I always think about, okay, what if this? I just think the world would look very different to this if a God formed this all with clear purpose, or with a purpose for us. We live on such a small proportion of the surface of this planet, where much of the planet will kill us. This planet is one tiny portion of the solar system (all of which would kill us), one of billions of star systems in the galaxy, in one of hundreds of billions of galaxies. All of these places are basically a death sentence to us. In a theistic universe, we could literally have magic powers to explore these galaxies and survive space without needing this complex biochemistry to keep us going. God could do anything. Now, maybe all those stars aren't for us, sure. But I don't think it's hard to imagine a universe where some magic powers could be helpful for us and just make things a little better. This is really the best God can do? Nothing matches my expectations for a theistic universe, honestly, at least not for a God who intervenes a lot. I could list a lot of things that are demonstrable that I think are unexpected in that worldview. The stories feel like what people would write in the time period, not eternal, special divine information or revelation. I don't think it's a high bar to have empirical evidence, supernatural abilities, or some specific prophecies fulfilled that couldn't have been literary creations. I'm sure people will disagree with me and say that such things have occurred, which fair enough, but I'm willing to be convinced if the case is good (PM me!). Instead, the case tends to rely on a personal story. That is great, and I am glad people are becoming better people because of it, but that is just not good enough for me for something so all-knowing and all-powerful.
  23. Being able to automatically lock topics after a period of time would indeed be really nice. I haven't found a setting to do that.
  24. Hey, thanks for sharing. I'm truly glad your depression is stabilized especially. There are certainly some theological things that I do prefer and feel more rational in the LDS Church than traditional Christianity. However, my experience dating an LDS girl did take me solidly from agnostic to "I am pretty confident that God does not exist". So... some tradeoffs there. Hard for me to treat the theology abstractly from many other... pieces of baggage. It's also a bit difficult to me because a lot of people seem to be very convinced on how the afterlife works, and there seems to be very little agreement on a broad scale on it, which frankly I think if divine revelation was a good way to get actual truth, this would... be more consistent. I get this argument from the perspective of human things somewhat. It still does feel like a bit of a cruel joke given how many children starve to death with no agency or ability to change that fact, or any number of bits of human suffering that just seem... awful. But separate from the afterlife and things, there does exist suffering that is very much not for character development. For hundreds of millions of years, animals have been brutally killed in a fairly gruesome cycle. Even if animals aren't conscious, per se, I don't know, I think we can agree that when animals get hurt, they tend to not like it. Seems like it's not a fun experience. This has happened for millions of years before anything like humanity existed. Look into some of the horrific mass extinctions, like the Great Dying. It is absolutely insanely brutal. So many species on land and the ocean died. Literal hell on Earth type stuff, with surface temperatures of the ocean at the equator at 104 degrees Fahrenheit. This level of callous indifference doesn't really make sense to me from an all-loving, all-knowing, all-powerful God, particularly when humans do not exist, it cannot be from any "fallen world" caused by human sin. (And there are lots of horrific mass extinctions, too!) It's just such a hard pill for me to swallow that a God made and designed all this, and this is the best possible plan. Spoiler for um... horrifying lifeforms I guess? None of this is surprising to me in an atheistic perspective, however, that this kind of indiscrimate pain and suffering would exist. There could be some divine plan that makes it worthwhile, but that takes far more faith for me to stomach. It would make much more sense, if God is real, that creatures did just pop into existence at Creation, and we didn't have millions and millions of entire dead species to generate what we have now. There are, of course, many many religious people who can reconcile the theory of evolution with their faith, and that's great. At least to me, this isn't the world I would expect from this God character--at least, an omniscient, omnipotent, and omnibenevolent one. It is not my intent to deconvert people (and indeed, that is very much against the spirit of this thread), but you may find it interesting to look up Alyssa Grenfell, who was incredibly devout, could swear she had such experiences... and now she doesn't think she was feeling God at all. Your experiences could be very different from hers, of course. I've never had a spiritual experience or feeling ever, and I know earlier in the thread I asked what that's like, and I never really got an answer that makes sense to me, so I'm not a good source to discuss what spiritual experiences mean. They just sound like the category of feelings to me. Ghosts and spirits would be cool, and I am fully ready to accept them when that's the best explanation. I would love for magic and such to be real!
  25. We had some big news this week, where Apple TV got rights to Mistborn and Stormlight adaptations, and so we wanted to get in and discuss it!
