  1. Sure. I would think any planet hopper would have to be a magic user of no small skill, and Elantrians are some of the most powerful magic users we've seen.

    Redshift?

Well, Jeremy, you would know that much more than I would, that's for sure. But you know what's awesome? If you're the bubble, and you see infared light. Heat vision practically for free. Now I'm going to be a little upset if Brandon didn't think of having a redshift, because that's just too cool.

    Redshift?

I feel snarky, so I would like to bring up that in classical optics, an index of refraction can change the speed of light. c is the speed of light in a vacuum, not necessarily other mediums. I don't know how to exactly reconcile this with special relativity, however. Anyways, on with the discussion of relativity. I would like to note that I have not taken the 500 level General Relativity class here at MSU, because that has two 500 level prerequisites. So I don't know the math behind it. I do know it is extremely complicated Hmmm, I actually know a physics grad student who loves Mistborn. I should link him into this discussion, because he is in General Relativity. (A side note, there's a reason why one is "special" relativity and the other is "general" relativity. Special relativity came first, and it only works because the reference frames are moving at a constant velocity. Special relativity is very well tested and is essentially science fact at this point. General relativity is Einstein's method of generalizing SR to accelerating reference frames. There are other theories than GR, but GR works really well, so any alternative theory would need to return GR) I guess you could frame it like that. It's really because objects have mass, and that leads to a gravitational attraction. That means there's an acceleration, and it's that non-inertial reference frame of acceleration which creates the relativistic effects. It's important to note that Eero's intro to relativity is special relativity. I guarantee you GR is much, much more complicated. Let's leave gravitons out of this Okay, my gut reaction is that yes, we will see a shift in light's frequency. Beligaronia is kind of right, but there would actually be a large redshift for any large change in time. Let's say that we're using Cadmium, so inside the bubble, time is moving slower. That means time outside is moving faster. So, let's call the time in the bubble the proper time. We get a super simple expression for the relationship between the time inside and outside: t' = 2 * t Where I'm calling t the proper time (inside the bubble), because that's a smart reference frame. Now, that factor of 2 is called a Lorentz factor by special relativity. It pops up all over the place, and it is made by a velocity of moving reference frames. I did some quick math, and a Lorentz factor of 2 means that the reference frame, by special relativity, is moving at .866c. That's... really fast. If we can liken this example to special relativity, then yes, there will be a heck of a shift in light's frequency, both ways. I suppose we could talk some GR here, but I don't think we need to go into that case. In order for time to dilate by a factor of two, we can make an easy conclusion: there's a lot of relativistic effects going on. This implies there will be doppler shifts from this effect. (Short version: Ryan's physics is sound) We run into some problems when an Allomancer flares metals a little, since that "acceleration" in burn rate will lead to some non-inertial analogs, but if we have an Allomancer burning at a constant rate, special relativity works perfectly fine. If I know the factor of time changing, then I can find the speed parameter Beta, which I can throw into an equation to calculate our shift of light's frequency, too. So for all the talk about warped space time, my response is "shut up and calculate" EDIT: I looked at some texts. The index of refraction has nothing to do with special relativity, because in that medium, there still can't be any signal which goes faster than light in that medium. Problem solved. Sometimes, doing high level physics (though SR isn't that mathy) makes you forget the easy stuff.
  4. I continue to be super stoked for this "short" story. I wonder when we will be able to read it?
  5. Ah, but that would imply that I would have plenty of stories to tell, yeah?
  6. They weren't edible
  7. I'm not certain BYU has a copy again , since a person kept/destroyed the other. Not sure if they have another yet.
  8. The whole "imbue" thing was why I know about the word invest. I humbly asked Brandon if we could call Hemalurgic metals imbued metals, and boy, did he school me on that. So, charge is canonical. I kind of get what you are saying there, but that doesn't change the fact that a metal or sphere is invested with some Spiritual/magical power to it. The mechanism of how one invests something is up in the air.
  9. Oh, it's definitely a fascinating idea, I'll grant it that.
  10. Would it be bad if I said some of the cosmology stuff is jaw droppingly fascinating? I think that might torture you who haven't read it. ...Ooops
  11. There are pictures which we will post! The best part of the wedding was when Austin, Adam, and I were decorated Mi'ch's car with lots of Aons. Austin can draw a mean Aon Omi.
  12. I had attempted it last year, but school got in the way. I'm not even trying this year for the same reason.
  13. Pfft, don't be silly, Andrew. It's me who hasn't been on these forums too much recently... On the plus side, I guess I can tell girls that I am immortal?
  14. buckets of food
  15. That's so awesome, I have immediately tweeted Brandon about this. He needs to see this.
  16. Before MBI, I was used to single topic RPing, which was sort of my intent with having a board like this here. I like that form a lot, too. I'd need to do some thinking about non-Brandon RPs. Something to bring up in our next staff meeting, which will happen sometime in the next week or two. Sure, this category is labeled "Community", but the other forums in this, besides General Discussion, are directly related to Brandon stuff. So my gut reaction would say no, but I do need to think about it.
  17. You're insane, Andrew. Way too much sleep deprivation... I don't know. It's not really high on my to-do list when I have college breathing down my neck and a metric buttload of Mistborn RP posts to write. I stand by my previous comment, that you'll get it when we start ShardCast. ...Soon.
  18. Well, that theory does not explain the Dawnblades, for one thing...
  19. Fine. Be that way. At least I called them a focus This is what I get for scanning forum topics. Maybe Stormlight is the focus, maybe not. I'm not totally convinced yet either way. There's nine books of stuff we don't know... Time to reassert dominance! There's also a common term that includes "charge" and "infuse". The Seventeenth Shard call this investing. So "charge" is a world specific to Scadrial, as well as infuse for Roshar, but it's all the same concept. There, how about that?
  20. You don't know that his power went into the Shardblades. That's conjecture.
  21. Whoa, the Coppermind is being useful!? Madness.
  22. ...They do? That's news to me.
  23. I'm just that good. Yes. It's actually a glyph, which are complex in their own right. When I went down to Josh and Mi'chelle's wedding, Austin (Nehex here) was showing me the glyphs he made from Brandon's lessons. It's incredibly interesting. We should get Austin to make a blog post about that...
  24. From the 17th Shard interview, the unifying theory seemed to imply there were only finite things that magic can do. I don't think we could even come close to surmising what that may be... So you want explicit rules? Okay, here's one: Focuses. They are really important Realmatically. The easiest example is metal. In order to use the magic, you need metal as a focus, for all of the magic systems. Other focuses that we know are Aons for AonDor. The first time I met Brandon, he said that the focus for Awakening was, in fact, the Commands. (Naturally, this begs the question what the focus--or focuses--there are on Roshar, which I couldn't imagine to answer) Judging from Mistborn, these focuses are related to the Shards themselves, since Ruin and Preservation can't see through metal. I don't know what sort of "blindness" Aons and Commands would give Shards, though. That help?
  25. It's important to note, guys, that Dragonsteel was written a long time ago in Brandon's career. He's said it's a mediocre book more recently. And I can vouch for this. It's only interesting for cosmology stuff. I've never met anyone who has read all of Liar. Brandon's said that book spoils too much. Sad day for us hunters, because we don't get to see it. But eventually, we will see it, and it will be a much better book. Come on, look how much he's improved since the Wheel of Time. It's gonna be a great book when it comes out. I'll still pout about not reading it now, though
