  1. Thanks Kurk! It also seems to me that our original Featured Theories (back in, uggggh, 2012, jeez) run is missing some essential conceptual theories. Maybe before we start the new run of featuring theories, there should be a week where we post a few important groundwork theories. Maybe it'd be called "The Essentials". Featured Theories has gone over basics on Worldhoppers and some basic Realmatics. What else should be included in a group of "Essential" theories? I'm kind of thinking at the very least, Principle of Intent and Shardic Future Sight. Simple concepts that could use extra highlighting. What else would be in that category? (Speaking of which, maybe "Featured Theories" needs a way snappier name, while we're at it...)
  2. Holy REDACTED the index looks incredible. Storms, man. Nice job.
  3. Good to know, Peter. I wasn't sure on the length. I'm sure if people are hesitant to pay the $45, letting them know you get more story for your money will help. (I'll add this to the news post)
  4. Nice, thanks guys. Some of these I've seen, some I haven't. Keep them coming! And honestly, if you post a list of other theories, I'm okay with you suggesting your own theories too. Again, this topic is just a convenient way for me to keep a pulse on awesome theories. So Tempus, feel free to link some my way too. Another criterion I did not mention would be the concept of how "valuable" a theory would be. Theories that really impress me either solve an existing problem, or reveal a problem that already exists. In other words, theories that do something, and add to our collective theoretical knowledge, are best, and hence have value. So for these Featured Theories, I'd like them to have this sort of value. Something important to think about, and maybe proposing a solution too. Does that make sense? Lots of the theories linked here have value, so we're good. Just wanted to clarify criteria on what impresses me. (Which, to be fair, I'm a theorizer and I have my own biases. If there's something I skip over, maybe Weiry or Windy will persuade me that a given theory should be featured.) I don't think I'm going to post here whether or not I'll feature a theory--that, I feel, might make the thread a bit argumentative, but not all the theories you list will be featured. But this is extraordinarily helpful already. It is also very good that four theories I already wanted to add were things linked here I'm thinking this series will be a weekly-ish thing. Depending on how many theories there are to feature, like months down the line, they may get more sparing, but maybe we'll have it on a consistent weekly basis. (And why yes, I am thinking of "what the heck are we going to do with the front page once Splintercast finishes this month.")
  5. Oh right. I probably should have stated some criteria. I want well cited theories that come up with rational conclusions given the evidence presented. Since these go on the main page, I want to read the theory and think "Yeah, that seems plausible. Good job." Generally post Words of Radiance would be preferable, simply because we got a wealth of new knowledge (plenty pre-WoR crazy theories are invalid now), but it doesn't have to be. They can be anything, not just Stormlight, too.
  6. Hey guys. I want Featured Theories to be a thing again, and though I have a few theories that I'd like to post to the main page, maybe you can help. If you see a theory you'd like featured on the main page, post it here. Let's keep it so you don't post your own theory here; someone else has to. I may not post theories that appear here on to the main page, but it would be really helpful so I don't miss out on cool stuff, so post things that especially impressed you! I think what I'll do is, prior to posting them to the main page, I'll PM the theory author and see if they want to make any revisions before I post it.
  7. From what I hear Subterreanean Press makes truly gorgeous stuff. Mistborn was marketed as adult fantasy, as almost all of Brandon's works are. You know, because the violence But here on the marketing they focus more on Vin to appeal to teens more.
  8. Legion: Skin Deep, the sequel to the novella Legion, is now available for preorder from Subterreanean Press. It is a $45 limited edition with a full-color dust jacket, and two full-page and full-color interior illustrations too. They are limited to 2500 copies, and are signed leatherbound copies. Additionally, you get the ebook for free. Pretty cool. The novella is to be published "late in 2014." Brandon's assistant, Peter, says that it is about twice the length of the original Legion. From Subterreanean Press's blurb about it: Subterreanean Press really does make high quality books, so it seems worth the cash to me, especially considering how rare a hardcopy of the original Legion is now. Image is from the originally Legion, since the cover for Skin Deep has not been shown yet.
  9. It's the preorder for Legion: Skin Deep. http://subterraneanpress.com/store/product_detail/legion_skin_deep News post coming very soon.

    Why Marsh?

I like this idea. Ruin would have known he needs to manipulate Vin in particular, so it is advantageous to pick Marsh for this purpose above some other random Inquisitor. It didn't really matter who the Inquisitor was, because Ruin could have made any of them into what he needed, but Marsh made sense to push Vin's buttons. Another consideration could be that since Marsh was the newest Inquisitor the Lord Ruler had made, Ruin wanted to pick someone who wasn't as heavily indoctrinated in the Ministry. Or, it could simply be that with Marsh killing most of the Luthadel Inquisitors, the other Inquisitors who were still alive were in the Outer Dominances, so if Ruin wanted machinations in Luthadel, he was the closest. EDIT: Actually, Marsh had upwards of twenty spikes near the end. The amount of spikes in Inquisitors varied from nine to eleven during the Final Empire, and Ruin added more spikes to them. Marsh got the most. I'm not sure where you got the ten Inquisitor figure. The math has been done before and there were more of them post Well of Ascension. (There were around, I want to say 36 during the time of the Collapse)
  11. Steve, the admin of Stormblessed, posted this to the Stormblessed group on Facebook: I personally have no information regarding this, but I thought you'd like to know that this week, apparently something is coming our way.
  12. I always thought Vasher was on Roshar because Stormlight is a much easier, and much less costly, fuel to keep him alive than Breath was. I vaguely remember that there was a quote from Brandon to this effect, too. So that at least explains why he is on Roshar. After he consumed so many Breaths, maybe he just got fed up of it.
  13. Technically, a "metalborn" is either a Ferring or a Misting; it is the generic term for all of these.

Huh. What browser are you using so I can test things?
  15. I would tend to agree--I loved Skin Game, but thought Cold Days was stronger. But there were a lot of very emotional heart to hearts that I loved. It was great.

Is this still an issue? I haven't encountered this error myself.
  17. Today, Kaladin and Shallan confront the chasmfiend, and anything more would be far too spoilery of an introduction. Enjoy the insanity of Feather in this Splintercast.

  19. In this episode of Splintercast, Part Four of Words of Radiance really kicks off with something you really didn't expect to happen, and it is wonderful and terrifying.
  20. No, the points of interest are identical.
  21. I am assuming the first Luthadel map was also Nazh's work.
  22. We previously reported that there would be a new edition of Mistborn coming in May, and it came out last week. It's a trade paperback size, and this time it's marketed towards teens. The actual text is exactly the same (save for a few mistakes that were finally fixed), but has new maps. I snagged it today, so let's take a look. First, the trade paperback size is wonderful. It's just more comfortable to hold. The text is bigger than the smaller, mass market paperback--which makes sense, considering it is marketed to teens. The cover, which has previously been the cover for the entire trilogy of ebooks, is as beautiful as it has always been, and the title and author text is lightly embossed. It's really nice to hold, and any day of the week, I'd rather hold this one than the paperback. The text on the back features the prologue epigraph, and the plot summary on the back is almost identical to the mass market paperback, but doesn't mention Allomancy, instead focusing solely on Vin. It ends with the new line, "Where a hero rose to save the world and failed, can a young heroine succeed?" This, with the Vin-centric cover, is the marketing towards teens, and I hope it works. Inside, there's a section for "Tor Teen Books by Brandon Sanderson," which in addition to Mistborn and The Rithmatist, have The Well of Ascension and The Hero of Ages listed as upcoming. It took me a moment to realize they are referring to the trade paperback rereleases of them, because obviously those books are already out. I'm kind of dumb sometimes. The symbols on the chapter headers and part headers are exactly the same as the normal Mistborn version, so it doesn't use the base sixteen numbering system that was in Alloy of Law--if you never noticed, the symbols in this book just go up to 23, then repeat again, where Alloy uses the actual numbering system in-world. But what is new? Let's look at the maps. As you can see, the map of the Final Empire is almost identical, but now it is full page, with no borders. The background of it is no longer white, but a nice texture that makes it feel more ashy. Very cool, but it's not "new" per se. As it turns out, the Luthadel map is the new one: Why, it's in the exact same style as the map of Elendel in The Alloy of Law. Instead of there being a legend for the points of interest, they are marked as X's on the map itself. It also features that same ashy texture. The borderless map is really dang cool, too. So, if it looks like Alloy's map, does it have that mysterious text from Nazh? Yep. If you can't see, it says "Since you insisted on having an updated version, here is the new one. I am not going back a third time. - Nazh". I am in awe. That is freaking hilarious. (Also, someone should tell Nazh that Well of Ascension's Luthadel map has different points of interests in it.) For those of you who don't know, Nazh's writings have appeared in Alloy of Law and Words of Radiance. Presumably, he's collecting all these maps for the writer of the Ars Arcanums for all the cosmere books, which are all the same person. Solely for the hilarity and awesomeness of the Luthadel map, this is worth a purchase, but the size makes it awesome all by itself. Dang it, Brandon. I already have too many copies of this book and now I'm going to buy this one, as well as the re-released Well of Ascension and Hero of Ages, which could also have Nazh quotes? Lord Ruler, man.
  23. I must say, not that I ever thought Amaram was good, per se, but when Hoid said how bad Amaram was, I knew crap was getting way serious. And Hoid's line at the end. Dang.
  24. This time on Splintercast, we get a Shallan flashback, where she plans for her family to escape. Kaladin and Adolin have the best bromance of all time, and Alyx freaks out (but that isn't new). Then we actually see Dalinar again! And Wit appears, and has a conversation with Amaram, and gets one of my favorite lines in the whole book. It's wonderful. Prepare yourself for more Splintercast right now.
