I would not call this a "nuanced argument," rather just an emotional reaction. I think if you were unbiased from the internet you'd find it enjoyable. It is a very strange cartoon show that is apparently popular. It has all of the zany, but not much else.
-
I just want to know your military readiness, man
-
We don't do RP or in-character or out-of-character, so you're good. (This is totally how I normally am). Do you have anyone else in your clan, even? I can't tell. And hey, it's all good. The show is quite good. You know you want to join me, Mozy! That reminds me, I need to fix MBI...
-
We do have the largest alliance of the social groups. Our firepower is unmatched. More in our coalition is always appreciated.
-
Fair enough I always consider RP a lot of work... (but then, I do MBI, so.)

Moved to Brandon Discussion.

You guys take RPing so freaking seriously. Relax

Quiver betrayed the Newcagoans, which endears him to me greatly. Should he accept my offer of an alliance, we will join his side in the war and our considerable forces shall fight. Remember, the Feathertips are ours. We will not aid the Newcagoans. How preposterous for you to suggest the idea. You are rather terrible at remaining neutral. Proper neutrality means exploiting all other sides for your own gain. It is, in a way, much more difficult than simply declaring war. As for the matter of the ponies. One cannot deny the quality of the animation, which is gorgeous. I dated a girl who very much liked the show (to put it lightly), and I enjoyed the episodes we saw together. It is generally smartly written and has characters that anyone can empathize with. I am reminded of the travesty that is Adventure Time, which is apparently popular. There's very little consistency, and it's just random madness. I am not amused by it. I am impressed by smartly written episodes that are well structured, which MLP totally has. There are some quite good sequences. The show has artistic merit and is generally enjoyable. So no, all factors aside, I would generally approve of the Herd. RP is too serious for my taste. I want tomfoolery, not to spend an hour crafting a response. The Raven Throne is on thin ice with us, as far as I am concerned, but they are welcome to join our grand coalition.

The War. Volume 2: Traitors and Alliances
Chaos replied to Mailliw73's topic in Social Groups, Clans, & Guilds
Quiver, this is my formal invitation for you to ally with the Lords of Chaos. You have betrayed our enemy, the Newcago Court, and will stand by you in this war should you decide to accept our offer. And should we declare such a formal alliance and enter the war, Mailliw, I expect you to uphold your alliance with us and switch sides. -
You can get the ebook of Shadows Beneath right now: http://www.17thshard.com/news/brandon-news/shadows-beneath-and-sixth-of-the-dusk-available-r193 So I thought, hey, we probably need a spoiler thread for Sixth of the Dusk. What did you think?

We reported on Shadows Beneath, the Writing Excuses anthology before, but now you can get the ebook from Dragonmount, at a price of $9.99. Update: you can now get it on all major ebook retailers. It contains the cosmere story, Sixth of the Dusk, as well as I.E.Demon, by Dan Wells; An Honest Death, by Howard Tayler; and A Fire in the Heavens, by Mary Robinette Kowal. It also contains behind-the-scenes looks, comparisons of the first and last drafts, transcriptions of the episodes regarding the stories, and awesome illustrations. Not into the ebook? Well, you can order the physical version from Brandon's site starting tomorrow at 12:01am. It is priced at $25.00, but for $5 more, you can get the limited edition, which will be signed by all four authors. There will only be 200 of these limited editions, however. Lastly, if you come to WesterCon in Salt Lake City, which is July 3rd through the 6th, you'll be able to get it there, as all the Writing Excuses crew will be there! (In fact, you can read about Dan's adventure through the airport wearing his fantasy cloak here.)

A good question, we don't know. Clearly it is possible though. The Seons and Skaze are much less prevalent than the spren are on Roshar. I'm not sure they'd be the danger. The reason why Shadesmar is dangerous is because there's very little release on the broken power of Devotion and Dominion. The Seons and Skaze are actually some release on the power, but it isn't enough, whereas on Roshar the spren are sufficient release. I don't think the Seons would be the nastiest thing there, rather, all that power thrown around would.

You obey me because I know how to create the most chaos. You don't We... really don't RP here, you know... I will smite you should you not desist. You dare mock us when we win wars? Please.

I agree, I don't think that it was their "design" necessarily. The power obviously allows for a lot, and if you know to go to another world, then I guess that'll work. That quote is absolutely about Shadesmar, Moogle. It has a black sky and "a strange, small white sun that hung on the horizon, too far away." That's from Shallan's first experience in Shadesmar. I can't believe I never picked up the reference before. Or, at least the Physical Realm. Maybe they just transition into the Cognitive or Spiritual, whereas someone who knew what they were doing to worldhop would use that access to Shadesmar to then worldhop. This could explain something that has been bothering me: why the secrets of worldhopping have remained so... secret. If using a Pool is one of the primary ways (maybe there are others), that would explain that. Those things are obviously rare and highly guarded. In any case, with the renewed Elantris, Raoden and Galladon would have figured out what that pool did, so that unequivocally explains how Galladon can get around. As for Demoux, Harmony could have let him have access to such a pool, perhaps. Important edit: Elantrian "death" is actually even easier. All you'd do is go into Shadesmar and let its dangerous workings on Sel destroy you Problem solved, I guess.
-
Wow, I totally did not remember that. Very cool. I wonder where the Elantrians went, though. More importantly, why that pool allows for worldhopping while the Well did not.

Well, the thing is, the Elantrians do vanish in that Shardpool, so that could be related to some worldhopping.

That sounds like a lot of thought work to something I don't care about Have fun with that.

...Okay, no offense to you, but the string of numbers really made me think you were a spambot. (That and you accidentally posted this twice ) We've kind of had our fair share of them recently, haha. But you are obviously not a bot. If you were, well, they got way too smart for me Well. This is the *best* way to say hi to a member. Great job me. Sigh. Let's try this again. Anyway, welcome! I hope you enjoy it here.

When I asked the question, I had recently taken a special relativity class (which is actually, genuinely, very simple at its core). I have not taken a course on general relativity, where gravity and its warping on space-time gets mixed into it. I am not an expert in these gravitational effects at all, but Kurk summoned me, so I guess here I am. If you want an actual expert who has almost assuredly done general relativity, ask happyman. He knows his stuff, as he demonstrated in the original redshift thread you mentioned. I took some upper division physics classes. He has a doctorate in physics (I forget specifically, but eh, he's done quantum field theory, and surely GR as well). If you are not familiar with the idea of a "redshift" or "blueshift" of light, it's pretty simple. Locally (don't worry about the "local" word here; it is not relevant to this specific issue with time bubbles), light always travels at the same speed. If a light source was moving away from you really fast, at, say, .7 times the speed of light, because light will always travel at the same speed (rather than the light moving faster in this case), the frequency of the light changes, and so the color of the light changes. One direction is a redshift, the other a blueshift. Physicists use these terms even if we are not talking about visible light. (Why are you having me explain this so late at night? Wikipedia has great articles on this subject. Their physics articles are very, very good. So, you know, just read up.) So that's the special relativity case, without gravity. The gravitational version is just that, hey, really massive objects dilate time just as in the special relativistic case. If you're wondering what sort of gravitational implications this would involve... Stop I do not find this line of thought very fruitful. Handwavium needs to be applied so outside observers don't notice the shift in wavelength, so for basically all practical purposes, any "gravitational" effects are conveniently and magically very local and you should stop asking questions about redshifts with time bubbles In fact, happyman said in the original thread that the only people who would really know exactly about these gravitational effects in specific, quantifiable detail to actually be useful would be, you know, people who do general relativity for a reason. And general relativity, my friends, is very mathematically challenging. A very special group of physicists know it that well. I don't know if this was very helpful, but eh, it was that thread that I was like "welp time bubbles are basically worthless to talk about with the handwavium."

$20 does not, however, cover the main site costs... I promise you ads will be very targeted and be very tasteful. I've tried one out in a test skin and it actually makes the site better, oddly enough. And by "the admins" paying out of pocket, that is basically me Someday it'd be nice to break even...

It's just typically some people who "desire" the job may not be qualified for it. (Search UtopiaGreen on the TWG Archive to see a prime example of this.)
