Random Stuff VIII: The Admin Special
Chaos replied to Jo and the Bush's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Math is logic, pure and distilled, and simply requires proper practice. I fear that some teachers simply failed you somewhere along the line. I promise, through effort you can definitely do that. Also, though certain things are super pet peeves of mine, I can't take off more points than the problem is worth for them doing those things. Though I WANT to.- 1963 replies

"How to be a supervisor" sounds like the amount of training people get in low level service jobs. As in, very little training because "you'll pick it up as you go." Yeah, I guess. There was just so much logic fail going on on this quiz it was truly astonishing. It has to be amazing to get all four True or False problem wrong, especially when two of them I have basically put on every quiz on this chapter. But hey, I'm sure THIS time it's true! Yeah, no...- 1963 replies

Muwhahaha, you now realize that with me trawling the discussion boards, I am the Lord Ruler MUWHAHAHAHAHAHA UNNNNLIMMMMITTTTEDDD POWER ...What were we talking about again? *scrolls up* Oh. Well no one has to be perfect I think it is always good to be self-deprecating and humble and know that you have flaws. Nothing wrong with admitting that. Yeah, being the boss is really hard. This is why I love Josh being around. He can tell me what to do and that makes things much easier xD (Among all the other many things he does, in addition to keeping me sane.) I am also here on 17S procrastinating, but it has also made grading these terrible Calc 2 quizzes tolerable. I seriously had someone turn in a quiz that he got 0/10 on. It was an impressive display of no understanding whatsoever.- 1963 replies

Hey, Babylon 5 is freaking awesome. No, I simply just am generally depressed being single so happy couples are extremely irritating. Photos of happy couples make me (briefly) want to punch them in the face. Don't worry, Kaymyth, you're fine. I haven't murdered Josh and Mi'ch yet, so you're set. I will say having my queen size bed all for myself is kind of awesome.- 1963 replies

No rush. Writing takes time. I'm like the slowest writer in the universe. I did see them briefly. Admittedly, I am generally annoyed by happy couples these days, so I did a very quick perusal.- 1963 replies

I honestly know very little of your book, but when you are finished with it, I am happy to give comments. (Probably not until May, though.) EDIT: We're posting so fast I miss things! Well, I am a collegiate instructor of calculus 2 right now, and I've taught said class for like... seven sections now? (I am literally grading Calc 2 quizzes right now.) Calculus 2 is where integral applications are. I can answer most all questions, though if I recall correctly, AP Calculus covers a lot of approximation methods, which we don't lecture on at MSU. But, if she has specific questions, you can ask me, or she can contact me directly. [email protected].- 1963 replies

I'm picky I like distractions, so entertain me That sucks. All I can say is that I'm sure your characters and story has a life of its own and it will be distinct from Mistborn, I'm sure.- 1963 replies

I will soon. I am actually busy grading and 17S is doing a lot to distract me. It is useful but maybe I shouldn't spend two hours carefully pitching novels Oh crap. I needed to write White Sand rule posts tonight. Crap- 1963 replies

I'd tell you in PM, but not publicly. The idea of such a magic is pretty cheap; it's the implementation that is special. (Allomancy, to its core, is pretty mundane but the specifics and limitations make it interesting, for example.) That said, even if ideas are cheap, no need to announce them too publicly. I'm happy to give details via PM if anyone is interested.- 1963 replies

Fortunately in the story that such a thing appears, I never have to state said deity's name. I can totally skirt around it. I want to write my next book (the one with that god's setting), it is so freaking awesome of a world, concept, plot, and characters. Someday I'll get it written to show you, and I hope I convince you it is excellent! (I need to finish my current book, though, first.) Minor brag moment, when I pitched Brandon that book's magic system, he said a few years ago something like, "I tried that once. It is really, really hard so I scrapped it." I will show you, Brandon EDIT: Also, Domination seems... I don't know, it is slightly wrong, somehow...- 1963 replies

Normally I upvote to normalize these things, but sorry Chasmfiend, that was pretty abrasively stated. Ways that are better to state it might be "But I do read fast, this is how fast I read." Instead it comes across as "I am extremely awesome for reading fast, just believe me that I definitely read this fast. I really am awesome." I can absolutely see why this would be downvoted. Regardless, please no more commenting on this and carry on with the thread.

I fully admit I am very biased against tobacco products, regardless of their form. It isn't incredibly justified with respect to vaping, but meh. People can make their decisions; I don't have to like said decisions I am currently annoyed by the "VapeNation" meme. Yes, because tobacco companies really need your free advertising. Good work. Sigh. Also, from the earlier conversation about standardized testing, what the crap, Twi. That's insane. That test question is ill-posed on the best day. I could write them a stern letter with a university letterhead on the stupidity of such a question, if you like. Standardized tests don't get much better. The GRE--think the SAT for incoming grad students--is pretty stupid. (Not as stupid as the test question you described, but pretty dumb.) When I took the GRE, literally none of the math I did in my entire undergrad was even on the test. It was stupid logic puzzles, mostly. It might amuse you to know that actually did slightly better on my English portion than my math portion of my GRE. Remember: I have a Master's degree in Mathematics. Freaking worthless test. I had a girl come into my university's math learning center and I helped her with the math GRE. Turns out after two years of graduate school and two years of full time teaching mathematics, I can in fact answer the stupid test questions--finally. Hilariously, this girl's study guide had solutions that were definitively wrong. Happy test taking! They are worst.

I have a very difficult time with my own writing making sure it is distinct from cosmere mythology. It's really hard when you love it so much. I want to do similar things, but also want to make a distinct universe that is awesome in its own ways. I don't know what the solution is, but I am attempting to solve this by making some distinct structural choices in how this fictional fantasy universe would work. Plots will always have similar elements, but try to make sure there is something cool that Brandon hasn't done that people will think is so dang cool that they will tell all their nerdy friends about it. Also, don't freak out if ideas you have turn out to be kind of lame. The best stories take a lot of polishing and refining to make them awesome. Remember, the original Final Empire sucked, and the original Mistborn sucked too. Until Brandon married those two ideas, they were awful. Parts of an idea might be good, some might be cliche. Toss the mundane and find the kernels that are awesome- 1963 replies

This was certainly my understanding but I will poll the PM thread.

There are certainly not multiple versions that were distributed. That file hasn't changed for over a decade. The only people who may have a different version would be Brandon's alpha readers, who read it before he ever got published.

It depends if you use American or British English. Americans write aluminum, Brits write aluminium.
-
No plans to alter British spelling to American spellings. It is canonical for the Brits after all, and they have cool accents.

25. I feel practically ancient as I am surrounded by college freshman. (I'm a university professor.)

I love Zootopia. It was smart. Great story and characters with good dialogue. The animation was adorable. It was also about something very interesting. It took on the idea of social justice itself. It's really fascinating. I should go see it again...- 1963 replies
