The Splintercast Reads Shadows of Self, Episode 3: Chapters 7-9

"I just need to give the God of the world a hug, okay? I'm just... I'm just gonna hug him. Anybody got a problem with that?"

Another week, another Splintercast!

In this week's episode, I flail over finding out more about our lovely villain for this book, squee over the reappearance of an original Mistborn trilogy character, and talk about the philosophical question of whether technological progression is inherently valuable. And of course, the most beautiful of fandom experiences: the sailing of a new ship.*

I also happen to talk far too much about roleplaying and various campaigns. Oops. Sorry, not sorry. What, is anyone surprised at this point when I'm garbage? I didn’t think so.

Once again, comments and responses are greatly appreciated as they are the lifeblood by which I am able to sustain my corporeal form on this plane of existence. Your written contributions to my continued reign of terror will be remembered in the days to come.

*Editor's note: Not an actual boat. Nor is it an airship or spaceship. Spaceships aren't for many more books. -Eric

Love the reactions to the Harmony bit!

Lol- "She's terrifying. I love her."

Lel. Little candle stub.

Waxteris?

I dunno...Was Bleeder actually Tan when Lessie died? Heh.

Ooh! Firefly was mentioned!

Whelp, you totally caught on to the Melan = MeLaan. I didn't. At least, you thought of it.

*squints* Is that... an editor's note... on my description... explaining shipping? Harmony dangit. Truly 17S is an incomprehensible abyss.

As for Tan, I've got a spoilery idea (for end of SoS) about it.

So I have a feeling that Lessie had to have been Paalm at the time, because if she was resisting Harmony wanting to take Wax away, she wouldn't have played the part of Tan. Also if Paalm isn't Lessie, then there's no one to be Lessie!

That said, I also don't think Tan was another kandra, seeing as Paalm took Tan's form later on. I don't know how kandra feel about sharing bodies and bones, but seeing as only one of them could actually digest the body to get it perfect, I'd wager a guess that Tan was human at the time and Paalm took his form after Wax killed him.

I think Tan was probably garden-variety unhinged, possibly hemalurgically spiked, and Harmony was able to influence/control him enough to yank Paalm into the path of the bullet at the proper moment to make sure that "Lessie" died and Wax had a reason to go back to Elendel. Hence Tan's line about "something else moves us, lawman."

In other news: Heck yeah Firefly is GREAT. Its cancellation is the great tragedy of our time. And while I definitely caught the Milan/MeLaan similarity... I promptly forgot about it and didn't actually speculate that Milan was MeLaan.

Because I'm a dumbface. Does the hard part of catching the foreshadowing, misses the easy part.

That is not the reason ;)

This is great, I too ship Wax and Steris (ship name Sterillium?) and it was quite amusing to see you fall victim to it's adorableness.

But after listening to this, I'm not sure you should read Bands.  You'll surely explode, this is nothing compared to the Steris in that...

Bands of Mourning murdered me last night and kicked my cold dead corpse off a skyscraper. Which is to say, it was absolutely fantastic and the Splintercast recordings are going to be excessively entertaining upon completion, I'm sure.

In other news, we're communicating with the reanimated corpse of Feather?

On the technology advancement front... I get it that Sazed has fallen into the trap of Preservation of stagnation, but there may be reasons that Harmony wants the northern Scadrians to develop allomantiaclly because he can see a reason for them to be off world at some point in the future sooner than they would already, and/or to be able to hold their own against southern Scadrians?

On TLR - I thought one reason was that he could burn the invested Metalmind without swallowing them, as long as they at least pierced his skin

Quick announcement: Splintercast will return Wednesday instead of Tuesday, because tomorrow is kind of Bands release day. You should probably go read that instead.

Yeah, we are, because I'm a lame who got distracted by shiny things like Secret History and playing DAI for the six bajillionth time. In hindsight, We decided it might be best to just let Bands have a week to itself before we jumped back into Splintercast!

I really hope you also recorded your reactions to Secret History. There are so many OMG moments in that one that would be interesting to hear. :)

Since you brought up Firefly, and you love bad jokes, how does a Reaver clean his spear?

Spoiler

He runs it through the Wash.
