Chaos
 Share

After a short break on Shardcast last week due to sickness, we're back discussing the Lord Ruler, and this time its for PedantiCast action with his mechanics, powers, and abilities. And his powerset is absolutely ridiculous! We talk about Investiture, nicrosilminds, Hemalurgic unicorns... it's everything you want. Maybe.

We have Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), Evgeni (Argent), and Ben (Overlord Jebus)

@Chaos @WeiryWriter is it possible that TLR's Spirit Web cracked from momentarily holding the sliver of a Shard's power? Rapidly inflating and deflating causing a crack that allowed Ruin to antagonize him? Or he's going insane from just being alive so long, lol.

I didn’t hear the exact quote about the Lord Ruler and hemalurgy being what made his most dramatic effects, but is it possible it didn’t mean effects from him, but his literal creations of 2 different species from humans? Changing all feruchemists into mistwraiths which then are hemalurgically changed into Kandra is a pretty dramatic effect.

Hmm, for some reason I always thought the Allomantic Grenade had a Nicrosil core, supporting the theory that Nicrosil could store a single Allomantic power. But apparently that's just Ettmetal?

I do like the theory that Feruchemical Nicrosil can stores a single Allomantic power (as Investiture) and then you can burn that to get a supercharge of the stored power.

Savants are Invested according to WoB.

Blightsong

Would it be harder for Jasnah to Soulcast a Knight Radiant?

Brandon Sanderson

Yes.

Questioner

Would it be harder for her to Soulcast a Mistborn?

Brandon Sanderson

Yes, investiture resists investiture. It's harder for her to even Soulcast a person than a rock, right?

Questioner

Is a Mistborn invested?

Brandon Sanderson

The Mistborn, how their burning the metal, you're right. They are not specifically invested when they are not burning. When the investiture becomes active, the yes. Before, no, you're right on that.

Blightsong

So Kelsier, he stayed around longer, not because he was invested, but because he had the potential to use investiture?

Brandon Sanderson

Over time using the magic will invest you, on Scadrial. Most of the power is not coming from, on Roshar the power isn't coming from the person either [he cut himself off, so I assume this is how it works on Scadrial even though he didn't finish his thought] so I'm going to have to back up on that one and say, yes, the Mistborn are as invested as a Knight Radiant, because in both cases the majority, bulk, of the power is coming from somewhere else, but there is the spirit web. Investing the wrong term, but you have all these connections in the spiritual realm, so yanking you away from them, or rewriting them is harder.

Questioner

Would they be harder with more Stormlight or metals burning?

Brandon Sanderson

Yes, yes. That would increase the difficulty ratio. For instance, wearing Shardplate is gonna be a great barrier, right, and things like that so yea. The problem is like, Invested is the wrong term for that, their Spiritweb is connected in different ways.

Additionally, Feruchemical charge is investiture if it's being tapped. So, you are self-investing, I suppose?

And, being a Savant requires him to be burning/tapping a lot of things to keep his physical form together.  From the natural presumptions that comes with Savantisim.

And at 38:38  he said "Stores a Steel Push"  ...That's what Nicrosil Feruchemy does, as we understand it.  So, for instance, lets say Kelsier is a 4, Vin is a 5, Elend is a 6, TLR is 10... You could, in theory, store your strength in those abilities, and tap them to turn someone at Kelsier's level into TLR in regards to steelpushing for a time.

Compounding Allomancy, I believe, will be using Feruchemy to increase your base multipliers.  As an example, Vin gains lets' say 3x strength when burning Pewter.  If she becomes stronger, then her pewter becomes proportionally more effective.

I know they argue against this in Well of Ascension, BUT Ham is talking and he doesn't actually know anything.

So, I believe there is a corresponding way to increase "Base multipliers" when it comes to Allomancy.   Connection for Soothing and Rioting.  Fortune for Atium Shadows, Strength/Speed/Health for Pewter, etc etc.  This is, of course, with the assumption that Pewter behaves manipulatively rather than setting your strength to X.

I would buy that pewter strength is  2x+5 with x being starting strength.  It will raise you to a minimum, after it's use.

Personal feelings, could be wrong.  It just makes sense that physical allomancy would be effected by physical traits.

Sorry, I'm just commenting AS things comes up...I think that's appropriate.  I'm just going to wait until the end to post the rest.

Atium (as a god metal) most likely doesn't actually steal temporal/spiritual effects.  More than likely it is the "Super Spike" that steals anything intended.

Ruin could -LIKELY- speak to Rashek because his spirit is Ascended. It could also come from his -advanced- Savantism.  Insanity allows talking by Ruin due to their distorted spiritweb.  Savantisim on that scale -could- cause the same openness.

The dramatic effects I took to be because of Hemalurgy was the creation of Koloss, Kandra, Inquisitors, imo.  I do not think he -needed- to be spiked in order for Ruin to talk to him because of Kelsier being able to just speak to Spook due to connection/savantisim.
