Shardcast: Nightblood 2 - Electric Boogaloo

Long ago, in the ancient days of 2016, we did a podcast back when we called this Shardkeepers, about Nightblood and Corrupted Investiture. With the advent of Oathbringer (Oathbringer spoilers in this podcast, by the way), we have not only seen more Nightblood, but we've also had a lot more Words of Brandon about it. Oh, and we're going to talk about Azure's Shardblade, too, because that's a pretty big deal.

Today we have Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), and Matt (Comatose).

Check out our previous Nightblood podcast (where I really didn't know how to edit audio nearly as well): https://soundcloud.com/17thshard/the-shardkeepers-podcast-corrupted-investiture-and-nightblood

So a possible theory is that Nightblood may have been made with the 1000 breaths needed, but something about his awakening lets him suck the breaths from those he kills. Which may indicate a reason that he's black and why he's the most invested object in the Cosmere. Because he just keeps killing and getting the breaths.

Additionally, I wonder if you had a glove or something similar made out of the same material (aluminum) as the sheath, if Nightblood would affect the holder as he normally does.

I now ship Nightblood and Azure's sword. Also, maybe Azure's sword was involved in Vasher and her parting ways.

I never really felt that Azure's decision to part ways was a plot hole, because...

1) She thinks they're on a fool's errand. In her opinion, their plan is terrible. And really it was. If Dalinar hadn't opened up a way, they'd have been screwed. If she thinks they're going to travel a few days in the wrong direction only to turn back around... Why would she go with them?

2) They supposedly know where Vasher is... But he's probably not that hard for her to track down. She might already know where he is. So it's not like she needs to go with them to find him. Heck, if she didn't know she could have just asked them.

3) She also probably knows that Vasher and Nightblood have been separated. She outright explains before leaving that the Honorspren have information about the sword. Seems pretty clear to me that she considers Nightblood her primary target. Not surprising. So even if the others DID have a good plan AND were headed straight for Vasher, that's not her top objective at the moment.

4) Lastly, after abandoning Kholinar I think she really wants to stay and help the Honorspren fight the Fused giving chase.

Add it all together and I think her decision absolutely is the most logical one for her character.

Ok, well you guys have convinced me. Nightblood is made of Beyondium. It has been Invested to the point of being a perpendicularity. Everything he touches is forcibly sent there.

What I find funny is she tells them she can show them how to make another sword. But she'll just explain, hey you need a ton of Breath, something you can't get here. Also, Spren are locked to Roshar from what I understand. So good luck getting the required materials.

Swords are almost always made of one long piece. The handle will have a tang, which is just an extension of the blade, inside it. Of course, that's wrapped with wood or leather or cord or something of the sort, to make the handle. However, the important part of the handle is the same piece as the blade.

Hahaha, so I just recently sent off an email to [email protected] before I listened to this shardcast, this was the second question, which would have been the ultimate red herring chain:

  1. This character is Human and is originally from Scadrial. (obviously you can’t mention the capital H) (probably will guess Felt)
  2. This character is not currently a member of the 17th Shard. (probably will guess Ixatl)
  3. This character is pierced by metal. (probably will guess Kelsier)
  4. This character is seen acting out the plans of another.
  5. You’ve already been told what the character’s name is in an earlier clue.

Thought this was pretty original, guess not!

I wonder if Azure stopped on Sel on the way to Roshar. She said that her sword was a copy of the shardblades. Could it be a forgery?
