Shardcast: JordanCon Words of Brandon Analysis

Chaos

Today on Shardcast, we are talking about all of the stuff from JordanCon. This will be a twofer episode, which will be continued next week. Here we discussed Shardblades in the Cognitive Realm, answering a question we brought up last week. We also decide we are going to do an Odium podcast, and you'll see that later. We also talk about urges and demiurges. Yup.

This week we have Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), Ben (Overlord Jebus), Evgeni (Argent), and Rosemary (Kaymyth). Also starring: terrible Skype audio due to mysterious audio drift.

Another great podcast, thanks guys.

In regard to the deadeyes mostly disappearing from Shadesmar when summoned, I think the screaming the Radients can hear is caused by the deadeyes being stretched from the Cognitive to the Physical.

Great episode guys. Now I can't stop imagining variations of Hoid going through Nalthian Customs in progressively more over the top disguises, some of which involve lightweaving, none of which actually fool Endowment

Argent trying to go disguised to cons, undetected by Brandon, is exactly how I imagine Hoid trying to go to Nalthis, undetected by Edgli.

About the Fused and the black spheres:

As far as I understood the Fused, they are Cognitive Shadows having highjacked a Singer body. The Cognitive Shadow is not able to or not willing to share the body with the soul of the Singer, while a Voidspren is content with residing in the gemheart.
I don't see a reason why the Investiture making up a Cognitive Shadow should not be able to be stored in a gemstone. I assume the spheres Gavilar is in possession of, are normal spheres and not spherical Perfect Gemstones, since they are mostly being guarded by the spren in Shadesmar. The Unmade can be trapped in those big gems, I don't think a normal gemstone would be sufficient for an Unmade. So digging up an old (~2000 years) Perfect Gem filled with an Unmade seems to be much harder for Gavilar than getting "normal" spheres filled with Voidlight, Voidspren or the Cognitive Shadow of a Fused - however he found those.

I would ask if Kelsier's Cognitive Shadow stapled on a new body technically is a Fused and if you really can call a Fused without a body "Fused". It still has to be fused with a body, after all ;-)

With Ruin, I’ve always assumed the reason he had issues manifesting in the physical was to do with his inability to find or access the Atium catche. My memory of First Era is super sketchy but from memory the atium is at some point described as Ruin’s body - because he couldn’t locate it, he couldn’t transition to the physical realm. Maybe Shard’s can only manifest this way in the location of their physical body?

You guys mentioned the Everstorm and whether it was needed for him to manifest -  the Everstorm could be Odium’s version of Atium. It always seemed weird to me that the Everstorm turns up and then just sits there and doesn’t do anything (except transport the Fused from Shademar). Why doesn’t it hit Thaylen City and cause a bunch of death and destruction? It might kill some of Odium’s troops but they’ll just be reborn in the next Everstorm. But if it’s the physical body of Odium then it makes a bit more sense why it turns up, does nothing and then disappears.

The way Szeth describes them makes it sound like they are perfect gems, they are solid blocks of colour instead of glass with a shard of a gem inside.

I'm really interested in these shardcast discussions, but for various reasons the podcast format doesn't really work for me...are there any plans to make transcripts available?

Wow, the con sounds like it was all sorts of fun!  I'd have loved to have gone, but it was right in the middle of my honeymoon, so... :P

Closed captions are pretty terrible right now, but Google is making pretty incredible progress in the field of natural language processing, so I actually wouldn't be surprised if they beef them up before too long. Maybe you can make that work.
