Stormlight 3's Flashback Character May Be Dalinar (Updated Again)

Brandon has begun writing on Stormlight 3 in earnest, and today Brandon revealed that the flashback character for this Stormlight book will likely be Dalinar. This may come as a surprise to some, as the previous working title for this book, Stones Unhallowed, as well as Brandon's initial plan suggested Szeth was to be the flashback character. However, more recently, Brandon said that it could be either of the two, or Eshonai, depending on which information needed to be revealed first.

While Brandon hasn't officially decided, he won't know for sure until he finishes writing the sequence, he is definitely "leaning that way".

The other flashback characters in the first five Stormlight books will be Eshonai and Szeth. Since the original plan was a Szeth, Eshonai, and Dalinar order, it seems likely that we will have Eshonai for book four, and Szeth for book five. That will be it for the first half of the ten book Stormlight sequence. There's a time jump between books five and six, and Brandon will take a break from Stormlight books to do some other projects, like the Elantris sequels and the modern-day Mistborn trilogy.

Update 1 to include info that it is not 100% certain just yet.

Update 2:

Brandon has further clarified that he is currently writing the book assuming it is Dalinar's book, and that the current working title is Oathbringer.

So the answer is clear: book three is Dalinar's

How is the answer clear?

Twitter question: "So it's officially his book and not Szeth's any longer?"

Brandon: "I'll know for sure once I finish the sequence, but I'm leaning that way."

This news' tone seems way too definitive.

Sorry, was in a meeting and couldn't update it fast enough. I totally didn't see that tweet reply initially.

I imagine Szeth will be more than an interlude character in this book, though.

Nooo!!! Wait, was I the only one looking forward to Eshonai?

Eshonai was planned as book four for a long time :)

From interview here: http://www.adriasnews.com/2015/05/brandon-sanderson-interview.html

"So you know which character will be the main one in each of them?
Yes, I do know. For those who are fans of the Stormlight, book three would be on Szeth, the assassin in white, book four would be Eshonai, and book five would be Dalinar"

I just assumed that mean Szeth was going to be the flashback character, but I guess not? It's been a while, but I don't remember the first two books as really having "main" characters other than the flashbacks. If i remember correctly, they seemed to share the spotlight pretty evenly. Am I remembering wrong?

In addition, each character in the flashbacks are the "focus" character for the books. Kaladin has the most word count by far in Way of Kings, and Shallan has the most word count in Words of Radiance. Brandon described Way of Kings once as a big arc for Kaladin, with two smaller arcs with Dalinar and Shallan, so Kaladin was the "focus".

How do I know about the word count? Well fortunately, someone has done an analysis on that:

Way of Kings analysis

Words of Radiance analysis

Welcome to the 17th Shard, Deimos! Have an upvote!

And yes, that was his original plan, but he seems to have changed it.

Also, a note on the title.

WoR spoiler:

Oathbringer is Dalinar's sword, given to Sadeas for the bridgemen, then left in a flowerpot after Adolin killed Sadeas. So... any ideas who might pick it up? And what will happen to it?

I can't wait for Dalinar's flashbacks, so I'm glad that Brandon is considering moving his POV Flashbacks from Book 5 to Book 3, and also, I'm not particularly interested in Eshonai's flashbacks ... damnation it, where's Adolin instead? XD

Are you kidding people? Dalinar makes SO much more sense than Szeth or Eshonai. He is way more of a central character.

Well, if the word count proportions are going to stay similar for the next books, then you can already count me as a happy reader. Analysis clearly shows, that despite the different "focus" of each book, Kaladin kind of stays the "focus" of the series, as he gets most POV time. That's good, as he's my fav character.

And I am extremely happy that we'll (probably) get Dalinar focused book. He's more important character than Szeth or Eshonai and is also way more interesting. And I need someone interesting after having to read through so many Shallan's chapters in WoR (I really don't like her).

So: Yay, Dalinar! :D

Also: Hi, everyone. Long time no see. :P

I personally think that some of the flashback characters will be:

Dalinar

Szeth

Eshonai

Zahel

Jasnah

Renarin
