New Mistborn: Birthright Release Date and Platforms (Updated!)

On the Mistborn Birthright Facebook page there has at last been some information about the long delayed Mistborn game. Originally the game was supposed to come out in 2013. That... didn't happen. But now we have more information. It will come in Fall 2016, guys.

Here's the key information from the release:

Little Orbit is now five years old, and over that time we have interviewed many fans and asked exactly what kind of Mistborn game they would like to see. Unsurprisingly we learned there aren't many developers in the world that can do Birthright justice. Even Little Orbit as a publisher has taken on larger and larger projects in an effort to mature and grow to a point where we could properly support a AAA Mistborn game.

We spent much of 2014 working with a couple developers to map out a game that fans would love. And while this project has taken much longer than we had anticipated, it is still moving forward.

- The game design is complete

- The game follows Brandon's original storyline which takes place 100 years before Final Empire The game follows Brandon's original storyline which takes place in the early years of the Final Empire [edited - thanks!]

- The game is going to be on XboxOne, PS4, Xbox360, PS3, and PC

- We're targeting a Fall 2016 release

There's the strange plot inconsistency though, or at least an inconsistency with what was announced UPDATE:They have corrected this so that it is the originally announced plot.

Of course the early Final Empire is a much more interesting time. If you don't remember, the plantation system that we see in the trilogy were actually a much later development; the early Empire would be technologically similar but it would operate in a lot of different ways. So certainly, let us all hope that this is an error.

And now for the controversial opinion on my part.

Inexplicably, there will be an Xbox 360 and PS3 release (and no Wii U). I find it rather odd that they would still release for last generation consoles nearly three years after this current generation exists. From a specs standpoint, that is kind of insane, as the 360 and PS3 would be just over a decade old for the 360. I feel like that's just like trying to game on a decade old PC still running Windows XP. Sure, it might work, barely, but it won't be good. Realize that nowadays we have freaking phones that have the graphical capability of the 360, and in two years they will have well surpassed it.

I assume the reason they are doing this is that the previous generation has a big installed user base. That might make sense last year, or even this year, but two years from now, I think that's utterly insane. People on that Facebook post are excited that it will be on PS3, and I understand that having it on your console of choice is generally a positive thing. Then I remember how incredibly old these systems are and that in 2016 we will be three years into the current generation's lifespan. Three years! That would be unprecedented for AAA releases. I wonder if that's an indictment on these current generation systems, if they are doing so bad that companies need to release the game on decade old hardware to make a profit.

I'm sure my opinion will be unpopular, but I just don't want them wasting their time optimizing the game for ancient hardware. I want the game to the best it can possibly be, and we'll see when it comes out, but I can't possibly see those versions being good. And on another note, if you do downscale the graphics for a lower end system, why isn't there a Wii U version? You're already doing most of the work already. I don't know, it boggles the mind.

It is good to hear that it is still coming and to hear news. We will bring more news and analysis as we get more information, and you can bet we will have a review when the game comes out. I am hopeful it will be excellent, and it's very good that they want to do the source material justice.

Oooh finally news!  On the platform issue, as long as it's on PC I'll be happy.

I could not agree more. That's what I'm playing it on.

The Wii U and the rest of the console lineup are so completely different that designing for both of them for the same game is like trying to explore two different planets simultaneously.  It just doesn't work.  The Wii U is it's own thing, it's really not comparable.  I think the Wii U is great, but doing both sides of that coin just isn't feasible for a developer.

As for the graphics, if the game overall is well built, the graphical fidelity, or rather, the level of extreme detail, doesn't matter to me.  The 360 and the PS3 have awesome graphics, and the difference between there and the next generation feels minimal to me.  I care about it being an awesome Mistborn game, and that isn't about the graphics, that's about atmosphere, and controls, and gameplay design.  If they can pull that off, then it's a great game, and no one is going to care about the graphical detail except for the most nitpicky.

Why are people upset that the game is not on WiiU?  Most AAA games are not on all three consoles, if Nintendo gets a AAA game, it's one their own studios develop or is a Nintendo exclusive almost every time.

The Wii U is not as different as you claim, Silus. A lot of devs don't take advantage of all the gamepad has to offer so it isn't a big deal. And there are ports from other consoles.

My post is coming from someone who loves PC gaming, so there is some elitism. But it isn't just graphical, but performance. Playing an action game with 60 FPS is undeniably better than 30 or less. I want to play the game at its best, and downscaled 720p is not that.

1080p 60 FPS or bust :P

Hopefully by the time they get to 2016 people will have stopped wanting a PS3/X360 version.

I bet it is more of an issue of console saturation in the market.  I'll wager that that there are far more each PS3 and 360 consoles actively being used by consumers.  if 90+% of the market is on PS3, X360, PS4, PC, and XOne (personally, I don't know anyone who has a WiiU) then there may be little incentive to also include a WiiU version.

I agree with Shaggai, though.  By a late 2016 release, there will be far fewer X360 PS3 consoles being actively used.

I really don't understand all that concern for the lastest consoles. Actual technology has been working perfectly fine so far, and it was state of the art  only a few years ago. I refuse to accept that something can go from the most advanced technology to obsolete junk in just a few years. Not everyone can afford to change a device every time the latest version comes out, and many of those who can just don't care enough for it, especially since the only difference is some marginal improvement on graphics.

Personally, I'd rather prefer they spend less money on graphics and more on bug fixing. many of the newer games had been released with serious issues, and that's the hallmark of a dishonest or at least flighty business. if they sell a game with poor performances and bugs, I take it that they did their best but are not very skilled;  but if they released a game with excellent performances that still have bugs, I assume that they just didn't care enough to put on bug fixing the same amount of effort they put into everything else. which further lead me to believe that they didn't because once a player noticed the bugs, he already bought the game, so they didn't care anymore about him.

Anyway, nice to hear that they havven't give up on releasing the game yet. and if they are still putting money and effort into it, then they are unlikely to pull out.

Personally, I'm rather glad that it will be out for PS3, as that's the only 'new' console that I have access to. However, having said that, in two years time I will hopefully have a decent enough PC to run games like this, and probably wouldn't get it on PS3 anyway.

However, I am very cautious about this venture. A video game based on the Cosmere is really appealing, but at the same time, I've seen a lot of games miss the mark when it comes to promises made and potential lived up to. My hope is that this feels more like an indie game than a large release, and that there is a lot of community feedback and support. It needs to be polished - Not visually impressive necessarily (though that would help a lot in this day and age), but it needs to give the impression of a finished game more than anything. It needs to be smooth and functional.

My worry is that a bad game release could kill any potential of Cosmere-related works outside of the books/White Sand comic for a long while. And with so many bad things released recently, I am simply wary and cautious. However, it if all works well... Then who knows? We might see things become far more mainstream, which can only really be a good thing for the future of the books.

Am I the only person who is unhappy it is coming out for xbox360 and ps3?  The "next gen" consoles are already holding pc gaming back.  Having to develop for a 10 year old system is going to limit the game's potential so much.

Nowhere, the issue with consoles is when the ps3 and xbox360 came out they were very expensive, because their hardware was ahead of what would be considered standard hardware for the time period.  The Xbox1 and ps4 are not expensive, because there hardware is not nearly as advanced when compared to their previous counterparts.

@Chaos They're different enough that a straight port to the Wii U will be instantly recognized and called out as lazy by the fans.  I'd rather they put their funds/effort toward other things, like nowhere's suggestion of bug fixing.

I'm in the same boat as Wyrmhero, PS3/Xbox 360 are the newest consoles I have access to because I just don't have the money to stay "up to date".  lordofsoup and I obviously have very different definitions of "expensive".  This is also why I don't do PC games for the most part.  I don't have a machine modern/powerful enough to run most current games, and when I've tried running games on my machine, it tends to bog it down for the things I actually need it to do.  (I'm pretty much in the same boat for my phone.)

I don't really understand. what exactly is wrong with porting it to another console? what makes it lazy? I am just confused and wondering if you or someone could explain.

But PS4/XBone games aren't unversally 1080p with 60fps either. I prefer a PC as well due to the fact that consoles are inferior in that aspect, plus I'm not going to drop hundreds of dollars on a console that I don't care about for one game. And a lot of others are the same way.

Quick note: The original author has corrected the "plot inconsistency".

There's nothing wrong with porting it, it's that the system they would be porting it to is very different and to really take advantage of those features, they would essentially be making another game, which most developers aren't willing to do.  So what ends up happening is a sort of copy/paste of the original game onto the different hardware, which, in the case of the Wii U, will fall short because it won't take real advantage of the features that people buy a Wii U to use.  Thus, in the end, it feels like a lazy port.

Silus, when I was talking about expensive, I was talking about cost of the hardware used to make the machine, not its retail price.  The previous iteration of consoles cost about 700 dollars to make.  The developers made their costs back on game sales.  The current ones are making a profit from the sale of the hardware itself before game sales are even factored in.

I will be editing the article for the update.

Silus, Smash Bros doesn't use the Gamepad. It really isn't as big of a deal as it is made out to be here. Wii U games do not always do so and are not universally reviled.

I'm almost thinking that mistborn adventures would translate much better to a game format. Mostly based on the fact that a full mistborn would be too hard to get controls right. That and id find the wild West theme more suitable for gaming.

Wow, I just read this will be available on Mac...I've gone from ignoring the whole topic to excited about it with that tidbit.

Edit - Hmm maybe not. The latest press release doesn't mention Mac, but it previously was announced as such. Odd.

I'm also in the "can't afford the next generation" crowd, so I'm relieved it will be released on 360.

Also, it's been three years already?! Wow. It seems like just yesterday. Tragically in these three years I've only seen two games I would like to play among the next-gen line up, and neither I like enough to justify getting a next gen console (I got my 360 for Bioshock and Borderlands 1).

Well I don't disagree that the next gen lineup is crap (other than Wii U where you can get your games worth), but what above commenters who are like "hey I don't care about graphics" don't realize is that hardware influences game design. When you have lower RAM, the device literally can only hold so much information. It absolutely can be a design thing. Therefore, I would still like them to make one target of specs bug free. Doing that on 2015 and 2005 hardware? That's a lot harder!

Of course you could just play on PC ;)
