Shallan and the Symbol heads

Here is a sketch I did of Shallan doing her famous sketch of the Symbol head people in Brandon Sanderson's Way of Kings.

This is a scene that really stuck out to me while I was reading the book. Also, I hadn't seen any other depictions of it so I decided to be the first.

This is mostly a concept sketch. I want to do up a larger more detailed drawing using some references for the foreshortened body parts (hand and legs, etc).

The symbols I chose for their heads are based on Celtic knotwork with an attempt to make them look kinda creepy. Not sure if the symbols are what Brandon had in mind but I like them.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the feedback and kind words :)

I really wanted to capture this scene, it was one of my favorites (as someone who is always carrying around a sketchbook, I identified a lot with Shallan).

Hopefully I can make the next version even better (though I may try a digital painting version too...we'll see (time time...where can I get some more time....))

Wow, that's very cool! Reminds me a bit of M.C. Esher.

One thing I don't agree with – I suppose (though it isn't in the text) that their heads are one of the symbols from back cover... the probably-Voidbinding chart, near Shadesmar map. I hope you know which illustration I mean? But it may be just my impression about them.

Thanks, I can see where you are coming from with the symbols. To be honest I wasn't sure. I thought they might be refering to that, and I thought they might not. I'll have to read back, because I thought I recalled the text saying they were a bit more twisty than the ones in the back of the book.

If I do a digital version I can always just swap them out to have alternative versions. :)

This is fantastic - I felt like I knew exactly the scene you were depicting, before I even saw the full-size picture.

The composition is kind of odd. Shallan's legs are tiny, and the wall is very prominent. Symbol-headed things look awesome, though.
