As the assailant side stepped his spear strike, he swiped to the side to smack the attacker before he could draw the blade.

Jasper absorbed the force of the blow across his shoulders as he dragged the blade free. It stung, but the mail and layer of clothing beneath mitigated most of the impact.

The guard who was knocked prone, Ned, rolled away from the attacker and grabbed for his spear. As Ned grabbed for his spear, his companion quickly settled back into a defensive posture with his spear angled towards the assailant, determined to keep him at a distance where the spear would be more effective than the sword.

Caden nodded to the guards who saluted after he gave the passcode to enter into the chamber where they were keeping the King. He then bowed his head low as he spoke to the King, "my master, I have much to report."

"I hope 'we caught the assassin' is part of it."

Caden's face turned into a wolfish grin, "I believe we have, my lord. I have arrested two men who not only violated the lockdown, but were heavily armed and attempting to escape the castle. They are now in my custody, awaiting your command."

"Execute them both. Is it safe to end the lockdown?"

"There is more, my lord." Caden let out a low growl, "I encountered a spy in the ballroom."

"A spy? Who? And from whom?"

"She claimed to have been sent by," Caden paused, speaking the name as if it were filled with venom, "Robin, my lord."

"She? Another defective King's Lady, then?"

"The spy is a child, my lord. I don't know how old. But there is no way one such as her could have learned of Robin's betrayal unless she were involved with that traitor." Caden flexed his fingers, which gave audible cracks as he did so. His breathing became deep and deliberate.

Ivian almost laughed out loud. "A child?"

Caden looked up towards the King with a deadly serious look in his eyes. "Yes, my lord. I should have left a more competent man in charge of the castle's defenses before I left, but I will deal with that shortly. The child sparked the interest of your Ravenness, which led me to take the child into custody. before she confessed her knowledge of Robin, another called Biana, and some manner of organization of traitors in the forest, but she refused to give up their location."

"Oh, just let her go. I'd hate to see the Raveness take out her anger on a child of all people."

Caden growled with displeasure. "My lord, she is a spy, how else could she know of Robin's betrayal? I have kept it a secret as you have ordered me to."

"Have you attempted questioning her already?"

Jasper yawned as he put his back to the door and entered a low guard. "The two of you couldn't defeat me when I was unarmed. What makes you think you'll do better now?"

Would anyone be opposed to Seraphina randomly finding and watching the fight?

"And how much did she tell you?"

"Only that she knows of and is working with Robin, my lord. She claims to not know where they are right now. If you wish for me to release this child, then I will do so."

"There's only so far you can attempt to torture a child before they break completely and become useless in terms of information. Just throw her into the dungeon for now, but make certain that the Raveness doesn't come for her."

"My lord, if she is lying about knowing Robin's location, then surely if we allow her to leave she would run straight to her."

"Hm." Ivian nodded. "Very well. Release her. See to it that she isn't harmed, though."
