From Cenn's chapter in WoKs (page 41)

  Reveal hidden contents

For a moment, Cenn thought he could see something surrounding the squadleader. A warping of the air, as if the wind itself became visible.

Yep, sounds like Syl.

I knew there was something there. Bless you.

First of all, we know just about nothing about the recreant and what happens when a radiant breaks their oath. It would also make sense that breaking the bond would be very similar to doing so with an already dead Shardblade, which seems to require the person to physically summon the Shardblade before breaking the bond. There is also that WoR (and RoW) seem to indicate that Shallan broke the bond while Testament was summoned as a Shardblade - and crammed in the safe behind the picture in her father's room. It is said that the blade would've disappeared (keyword would've) as soon as it was placed in the safe, but Shallan sees it even after the safe is closed. Even still we don't know enough about how "dead" spren work to make a call either way.

Though it still remains that so many facts make a lot more sense assuming that Shallan bonded 2 Spren rather than 1, the thread was posted earlier but I'll do it again. For a while one of the biggest mysteries on the 17th Shard was how Shallan managed to regress on her oaths (which she didn't, unless you count killing your spren and then bonding a new one as doing so). Knowing Brandon Sanderson, most of the major character moments (Shallan's Truths, Kaladin's Oaths, Dalinar's singular character moment at Thaylen field), were probably recorded in notes somewhere before he even started on WoK.

Yeah quite true. We do know next to nothing about the process of breaking oaths. One thing I do want to point out is that Shallan didn’t break her oath when she killed her mum straight away. She breaks it in the garden talking to Testament when they are in spren form, not as a blade.

Shallan still has a connection to Testament, but we never see her appear when Shallan crosses into Shadesmar like Mya does with Adolin.

That's because the Inkspren had her with him.

Ok after listening to Jofwu’s explanation I’m more onboard with the Testament reveal. Still don’t love it, but there was some foreshadowing to it (specifically Shallan saying that Pattern’s voice was not what she heard when she first Soulcasts)

but I think there needs a lot more explanation for me to be fully onboard. But I do agree that it was Testament blade that killed Tyn

Pattern killed Tyn. She had already given two truths by this point. So she was to the third ideal. The first ideal is always the same. And in WoR the comment is made how she said the first ideal long ago. She never had to say that ideal again. So by the time she runs into Tyn she already had three pattern blade. It was the first time she had summoned him. The line about “but for her it didn’t have to be ten seconds” is her recalling summoning from her childhood vs the summoning of a typical shard blade. She is 4th by the battle of Thaylen Field. And she has garnet shard plate when approached by Jasnah.

The one thing I haven't noticed anyone mention yet is that when spren die their shardeblades are stuck in the phsyical world. It wasn't until the invention of attaching a ruby gemstone to the base of the shardblades were they finally able to be bonded and  dismissed to shadesmar. So Shallans testament blade should be stuck in the real world until someone takes the blade and gets a gemstone attached to it.

The other issue that most people are glossing over is that if shallans testament blade as a child is small, obviously they  have variable sizes but at the point she broke her bond the blade would have been stuck in that small form she had summoned it in. she's clearly using a larger sized and variable sized blade every other time she summons one so its obviously pattern, a living blade.

That said, kudos on considering other aspects. However:

  • Shardblade state only applies if the Spren was summoned when breaking their Oath (as per Feverstone Keep Vision)
    • Otherwise, even with lost or hidden blades, there should be hundreds more in the physical realm rather than kingdoms numbering their shards in single digits since the Vision at the keep was only a tithe of the number of Radiants breaking Oaths during the Recreance
  • The Bonding Gem likely only applies to Deadeye blades not wielded by their Radiant
  • Testament was not summoned when the Oaths were broken
    • RoW Ch 93 - Shallan is shown in the garden, no blade
  • Shallan gave Kaladin the Testament Blade in the Chasmfiend fight in WoR
    • Shallan is under an illusionary rock near the crevice in which they hid - while -
    • Kaladin is wielding her Blade at the far end of the Chasm - while -
    • An illusory Shallan runs passed to distract the Chasmfield (but, at the time Shallan could only craft moving illusions by anchoring them to Pattern)
    • So, if Pattern is moving the Illusion Shallan, it must be the Testament Blade she gave to Kaladin
