So, I was looking at the 10 different surges and noticed Illumination is the surge of Light, sound, and various waveforms. The "various waveforms" part stuck out to me since that probably includes radio waves, microwaves, and other EMS waves. I then thought about how if Hoid, a lightweaver, were to travel to era 3 scadrial he might be able to transmit and receive radio waves or alter them. along with microwaves, could a lightweaver like Hoid or shallan become a human microwave or make microwaves (the appliance) explode? maybe that is how Hoid will do his instant noodles! :D another EMS wave that could be cool is gamma waves, could shallan attack people using gamma waves? I just wanted to see what other people had to say about this and if anyone has something to add, please do!

Edit: does this belong in the SA thread thing?

Quite possibly, I think, though I notice Illumination includes sound and Shallan doesn't seem to be able to make sound, at least not yet. It would definitely take a lot of practice. Whether it's possible or not, I'll let others decide, but I like to theorize what this could mean.

Some potential abilities I see here:

Microwaving: Lightweavers could potentially weaponize microwaves, boiling the blood of their enemies before their eyes. Humans are especially vulnerable to microwaves, as we are 80% water or something like that. Additionally, you could cook food or burn things with this ability.

X-rays: Imagine generating x-ray light waves from your body... no one would be able to see what's even happening, you'd need some scholarly folk in there to figure out uses. Though over time with excessive radiation they could notice mutations or whatnot. Some of the earliest x-ray scientists radiated themselves so much they had to lose their arms.

Gamma: As you brought up, gamma waves would certainly be weaponized. Not much to explain here, in my opinion.

Ultraviolet and Infared: Again,  this could be useful if they know what to use it for. I don’t know too much about these to say much on the subject.

Radio: it would take near impossible skill in my opinion to manipulate radio waves exactly to whatever sound you like, but certainly you can interfere with anyone listening on radio. If people are using it, then you can shut down their communications.

- Sound: not a wavelength of light, but sound can also be weaponized, as well as used deceptively. This one does confuse me, however, as sound is merely vibrations we interpret as sound. Does that mean the Surge of Illumination includes vibrations in general? Pattern certainly indicates that.

Hopefully it goes better than her attempts to make a stick fire. I'd rather she not play around with stuff like friggin gamma rays too much.

That would explain why Pattern goes “mmmm” all the time! He’s trying to get Shallan to tap into her inner microwave!

This made me giggle!

The theory is sound though (pun thoroughly intended), as light is also just another wave and she can make them have mass. The wave/particle nature of a photon can even be maintained!

This. Don’t. Just... don’t. The surge of Division is much more precise. Lightweaving gamma rays around is bound to cause more than a few problems.

Spoiler

Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased)

[Discussion of Lightweavers manipulating other forms of electromagnetic radiation]

But the ultimate form (That Brandon said would be too much to be practical both in needed stormlight and application) would be the control of Gamma Radiation. If this could be harnessed, Lightweavers could literally become mini nukes, or death guns. The biggest downside to making Gamma radiation would be the damage the lightweaver would most likely suffer. So gamma radiation is impractical but its a fun thought experiment.

The best part of this whole speculation was how excited Brandon was about my train of thought. I don't know if anyone had brought up this train of thought before. But he was happy to remind me that things will get pretty interesting when Lightweavers discover lasers and start using them in combat.

My guess is that will happen in arc 2, This is going to be very interesting.

Sorry, just trying to piece together what I’ve gotten from the Coppermind summary chapters. And I didn’t have any distinctive memories of whether or not she could do that. My bad!

The burning question of my mind with regards to Illumination is if a sufficiently knowledgeable lightweaver could manipulate quantum field vibrations other than in the electromagnetic field (photons). Sound waves kind of implies you can, but not really...?

Particle accelerator Shallan???
