Casting the Stormlight Archive

Recommended Posts

Something I like to do in my spare time is come up with dream casts for movies that I think should be made. For the most part, these are based on books I like, but I've done one or two based on historical events.

Anyway, the other day I decided to do one for the Stormlight Archive, so I figured I'd share here. Comment with your suggestions!

I'd also like to note that since Roshar obviously doesn't have the same races/ethnicities as Earth, I didn't try particularly hard to keep characters from all the different countries the same race/ethnicity.

I feel more strongly about some casting decisions than others. Some of these actors/actresses I've never seen in my life and chose solely because they look the part, others I actually have watched and think they would work for the role. It just depends. Anyway, without further ado:

Spoiler

Kaladin Stormblessed - Nicholas Hoult

Shallan Davar - Bonnie Wright

Dalinar Kholin - Christian Bale

Adolin Kholin - William Moseley

Jasnah Kholin - Elodie Yung

Navani Kholin - Marjan Neshat

Hoid/The King's Wit - Tom Hiddleston

Elhokar Kholin - Mena Massoud

Torol Sadeas - Russell Crowe

Szeth - C.S. Lee

Odium - Anthony Hopkins

Eshonai - Zoe Saldana

Evi Kholin - Amanda Seyfried

Gaz - Sean Bean

Ialai Sadeas - Eva Green

Lift - Dafne Keen

Lin Davar - Gerard Butler

Meridas Amaram - Pedro Pascal

Moash - Barney Harris

Mraize - Cillian Murphy

Renarin Kholin - Timothée Chalamet

Rlain - Andy Serkis

Rock - Jason Momoa

Sigzil - Lakeith Stanfield

Syl - Sienna Miller

Taravangian - Ian McKellen

Teft - Idris Elba

Lopen - Michael Peña

Gavilar - Richard Madden

Happy to cast any characters you think I'm missing, to justify any decisions made here, and share other dream casts I've created if you're interested. Hope this sparked your imagination!

First off, I want to say that I LOVE the fact that you have Tom Hiddleston as Hoid/Wit. I really like that casting.

I haven't looked through everyone, but the couple of your cast that I've looked at I've like, for the most part. I am curious to know which casting decisions you feel strongly about.

My only big objection with your casting that I can see so far is the age of Shallan. I feel like she would look a bit younger than that.

For some reason I thought Shallan was mid 20s, but I just realized she's actually 19 during Way of Kings, so I can understand that critique. I still like Wright for the role though. Maybe Shallan and Kaladin would be a little older in a film/TV series than in the books.

I too really like Hiddleston as Wit. Bale as Dalinar, Peña as Lopen, and Crowe as Sadeas I'm also pretty proud of.

I like your castings as fantasy castings, but there are a few practical problems with them. I disagree with you about Teft -- Teft is super old, and probably hasn't aged well since he's a drug addict. Idris Elba doesn't look old enough for the role. Beyond that, Brandon has said before that the closest human race to Alethi are the Polynesians, and you cast a lot of white actors in roles that ideally would have more of an Asian/Pacific Islander look to them. Although Hiddleston as Wit is kind of perfect.

I know Teft is supposed to be old, but he can't be too old otherwise he wouldn't be effective as a fighter. I've always felt like Idris Elba looks a lot older than people say he looks, so with a bit of makeup, I think it could work. He looks gruff enough, I think.

As to race, as I said, I didn't try particularly hard to stay true to that. I had actually planned to, but then I couldn't find anyone for Dalinar that I liked except Bale, which kind of messed it up. So I just gave up on that.

If Odium is going to be like the books Anthony Hopkins is of course a great choice. I would have someone younger play him though. I think Odium is too much like Emperor Palpatine in presentation and the way he talks.

They are both elderly men who manipulate the protagonist by referring to them as "son". They both say "good good" a lot. Odium says things like "There is great Passion here", he's always egging people on to let their Passion free while Palpatine is saying "use your hatred", and approvingly says "I can feel your anger".

A lot of that is unavoidable given Odium's nature he's going to go on about how useful hatred is. But he doesn't have to be an elderly man like Palpatine. He should be different.

Cast him much younger. Get a veteran stage actor in his 30s or 40s who is really talented, but hasn't been seen in a lot of movies or TV (basically what Anthony Hopkins was before Silence of the Lambs), so when he pops up out of nowhere for the first time people won't know what to expect.

Tor did something similar a few years ago (unfortunately the pictures no longer work) and they had some real gems there, including Alex Mallari Jr. for Kaladin and Geore Takei for Taravangian. David Tennant would be my first choice for Hoid, but Hiddleston is awesome as well

Jasnah as Elodie Jung would be perfect.  I also think that the choices for Wit, Odium, Eshonai, Gaz, Lin, & Moash are great.  So is Navani and Elhokar.    I have very strong negative opinions about your choice for Kaladin, Shallan, Dalinar, Adolin, Renarin, Gavilar, and Evi and I can find no good way to speak about them so I'll leave it at that hahah.  Most of the others for the side character cast seem very solid, tho.

I think that Vin Diesel needs an appearance, but I'm not sure as who.  And Rock as Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is just too perfect and needs to happen even if I'm literally the only person on the planet who thinks so.

Don't worry, I can take the heat. What are the problems? Do you have any alternative suggestions?

I don't have alternative suggestions, I just burn things to the ground.  That's part of why I didn't want to say anything more to begin with :)

First, though, they're super-white.  Like, stand them next to a fence-post painted white and they'd be mostly indistinguishable.

I'm sure that Nicholas Hoult is a perfectly decent person and is an okay actor from what I've seen, but Kaladin is someone who's been fairly deeply traumatized.  Even living inside of Kaladin's head, he got a bit much for me in WoR the first time around leading me to look for excuses to put the book down and go to sleep; we need an actor who is capable of channeling that pathos and coming across emotive instead of whiny, and the limited experience with his acting chops that I have doesn't lend me to think that he's capable of that.  It's a really hard ask, for someone that young to be able to channel that pathos and have it feel genuine.

I have similar thoughts about the actors for Elhokar, Renarin, and Adolin -- it'd be really easy to get too much or too little and dislike the characters for the wrong reasons.  Timothée Chalamet as Renarin in particular I have concerns with, but partially because I've never seen a thing he's been in and (me unfairly judging him entirely by his looks) seems like an actor who would play him as blatantly super-creepy and weird instead of with the subtlety that is reality.  That thought is one that is most open to change, tho, since he is playing Paul Atreides in Dune

I just plain don't like Christian Bale as an actor.  Also, I don't think that he has the physical frame capable of pulling off Dalinar.  He'd bulked up a bit for the Batman role, and it's not like he was exactly huge there.  Maybe it's just my mental image, but I've always seen Dalinar as someone who's 6'6" and bulky muscular; as method as Bale has been to change his physique, he's still lean muscular.

Bonnie Wright looks nothing like the Shallan in my head.

So really just a bunch of baggage for me, personally.  I do like the idea of an animated series for SA, though, especially since it'd be easier to do a lot of the necessary but weird bits--like populating the world with spren, instead of just having some here and there plus the important ones.  Or mobile 'grass'.

Just a reminder that Alethi are dark tan with black hair and epicanthic folds. Ethnically, they would be something like a mix of Asian/Polynesian. We should try to find actors that fit their physical descriptions whenever possible (and it is very possible). For example

Ken Watanabe or Donnie Yen or Manu Bennet or Salman Khan for Dalinar

Alex Landi for Kaladin

Sammo Hung for Sadeas

Park Hye Min or Mirei Kiritani as Shallan

Maggie Q as Jasnah

David Bautista as Rock

Jimmy Yang as Renarin

Michelle Yeoh as Navani

Nyle DiMarco as Adolin

Tom Hiddleston or David Tennant as Hoid

To be fair, if we're going to criticize for not staying perfectly true to the imaginary races in the books, Brandon has said that Polynesian is the closest we're gonna get, and East Asian is not much of a better substitution for Polynesian than white.

Brandon has consistently said Asian/Polynesian.

"Alethkar natives other than the Shin have the epicanthic fold, but the Alethi wouldn’t look strictly Asian to you–they’d look like a race that you can’t define, as we don’t have them on earth. I use half-Asian/half-arab or half-asian/half-Polynesian models as my guide some of the time, but Alethi are going to have a tanner skin than some of those." - Brandon Sanderson.

Actually, this is what he's said, but I digress. It's all imaginary anyway - both Brandon's descriptions and my admittedly somewhat textually unfaithful casting.

Meh, it's usually a process, not me knowing the actors off the top of my head. I already have a picture of the characters in my mind as animated, so the next step is finding a character in a different medium that (roughly) fits the voice of the Stormlight characters in my head. I look up the voice actor after that, and put down some of their more notable roles so people can put the name with the face...or voice, in this case.

My life action fan casting is very different and doesn't really mesh well with Brandon's works anyways.
