Gerald sighed. "What is it this time?"

"I have come to destroy you!"

Gerald performed the eyebrow-raise-equivalent. "Oh, really? How surprising."

"I'm serious," continued Dr. Who Octopus. "Our last conflict has sent me into deep introspection. I thought long and hard about all our conflicts, and have come to a startling conclusion: I focus too much on spectacle!"

"Gerald?" Ellis asked. "Who is this... ah... guy?"

"Dr. Who Octopus! Remember? The weird octopus who locked us in a cave?"

Dr. Who Octopus sighed. "See? I was too caught up in making your downfall as epic as possible. And he doesn't even remember it! Spectacle just isn't working out for me."

"Hate to agree with you pal, but... yeah."

"I've decided to turn over a new leaf!" declared Dr. Who Octopus. "No more with the outlandishly complex schemes for world domination. No more with the fiendishly constructed death traps to finish you off. And no more long, revealing monologues for demonstrating my genius!"

"Oh, I know," replied the octopus. "I'm doing it one last time, for old times' sake."

In a swift blur of motion, one of his arms transformed into a polished metal weapon, sleek and deadly. He fired it three times in quick succession, blasting a hole straight through Gerald.

"Goodbye," he added, as Gerald's corpse dropped to the ground.

With a roar of anger, Ellis whipped out his sword and ran to attack the octopus.

The robotic cephalopod raised another arm to parry Ellis's strikes. "Calm down," he remarked. "I have no quarrel with you."

"Nobody shoots my squid!"

"False!"

Melody knelt next to the body, tears trickling down her face. "You... you shot him!"

"True! And believe me, he had it coming."

"Did Gerald ever come after you and shoot you dead?"

Ellis stabbed the octopus in the face.

The sword went through the octobot's shell with a grunt of pain. With a couple of tentacles, he yanked the sword out and flicked it backwards. "Really," he said mildly. "This violence isn't going to get you anywhere."

"Weren't you listening when I discussed my grievances with him?" Dr. Who Octopus sighed. "Heroes. Honestly, it's a wonder they ever get anything done at all."

At that moment, a large metal insect's foot pierced through the top of the tent and planted directly in front of the octopus.

"Ah," exclaimed the octopus. "My ride. It looks like my time with you has been cut short." He gripped the leg. "A pleasure to meet you all. Farewell!"

The leg lifted up, taking the octopus with it.

"Hey, wait!" Melody ran out of the tent, grabbing her giant sword. "You can't just leave like that!"

In the distance, through the pouring rain, Melody could see an octopus riding a giant beetle flying away. Far too far for there to be any hope of catching up to him.

Gerald laid lifelessly across the floor of the tent, robotic arm twitching slightly.

Ellis pulled off the arm and hurled it across the field. He wouldn't let anything that Dr. Who Octopus might've once had come anywhere near his squid.

"Buddy?" He asked quietly. "Gerald... c--can you--" He swallowed. "Can you hear me?"
