Texastrojan1685 Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 So in the past I have seen people use Harry Potter houses to create a point systems for their classrooms, by placing kids in houses and granting points to the houses for students doing various things. I was thinking I could do something similar with orders of knights. I’m in the exploration phase of this right now and looking for thoughts and ideas. 5
Mist she/her Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 (edited) Welcome! This is a fun idea. Perhaps a quest for each order. The Knights Radiant aren't typically competing with each other, but you could separate them by order. My one concern is that Harry Potter is for a younger audience, shorter, and more widely known. I just realized. This isn't one. Edited July 9, 2020 by Mist
Karger he/him Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 Welcome to the shard. Are you interested in doing ten different teams?
Texastrojan1685 Posted July 9, 2020 Author Posted July 9, 2020 (edited) I probably wouldn’t use all orders was thinking like 4-6 orders. Also I teach High School. I was planning on rewarding gemstones (points) for various task or things done. And order with the highest gems gets 10pts on their unit test. Edited July 9, 2020 by Texastrojan1685 1
Wind he/him Posted July 10, 2020 Posted July 10, 2020 If you got a whole class to read these books, then you can do anything! This sounds like a great idea!

The Awakened Salad they/them Posted July 10, 2020 Posted July 10, 2020 That sounds like a fun idea! What orders were you thinking of using?
Adran Oathbreaker he/him Posted July 10, 2020 Posted July 10, 2020 Hello, welcome to the Shard! I like your idea. It makes the class more interactive. Which Order do you belong, btw? 1
Honorless he/him Posted July 10, 2020 Posted July 10, 2020 Welcome to the Shard! Are you using the novels as texts in your school?
PiedPiper she/her Posted July 10, 2020 Posted July 10, 2020 Awesome! I would have loved it if my teachers had done this. Welcome to the Shard -- a couple questions: US or UK covers? Favorite magic system? Favorite cosmere planet (not counting the actual story it takes place on)?

No. But I figured the kids wouldn’t necessarily need to understand that part to grasp what was happening. All they would need to know is they have to do certain things to earn gemstones for their order, order with the most gems wins. i was thinking that some kids may ask about it get curious and read the books on their own.

US, so far all the answers to this are Stormlight Archives, so surgebinding and Roshar. The only other book I’ve read that doesn’t take place on Roshar is Warbreaker. I started reading Stormlight Archives bc my nephews were named Kaladin and Dalinar, and I thought any good uncle should know where his nephews Mamés came from. 1

Hmm... true, I don't think kids would appreciate having to read texts of this size either. That would certainly defeat the purpose of trying to have them enjoy reading.

That is incredible that your nephews are named after characters in the Stormlight Archive!!!
DalinarShadow he/him Posted July 10, 2020 Posted July 10, 2020 Whoa, incredible ! What names, Dalinar and Kaladin in the real life, it's very original !

Willshapers are the best! This is a great idea! The size of the books scare most of my classmates (I’m a junior) but I wish they would at least read Mistborn so they would get my references. 1

I have one junior friend who reads Sanderson and two (maybe three?) senior friends who do, though. So I guess I'm pretty lucky
Texastrojan1685 Posted July 11, 2020 Author Posted July 11, 2020 I could use help determining how to choose which orders to use. And how to determine which order to put each kid in while still keeping the orders close to having the same number of kids in. I’d like to create a brief survey that could be academic and character driven.

I guess that's not very academically driven, though.

Hmm... that makes me think I could do an open ended questionnaire of like 5-6 questions that would be dual purpose getting to know the students and putting them in orders. They wouldn’t necessarily have to be academically driven, it’s important to get to know students also. Think of any good open questions?

You could ask them questions like "Where do you see yourself in ten years?" or "What qualities are most important to you in a friend?" or "What are your interests?" (with that one, for example, if they are a theatre/choir/art student, it might be a hint that they may be a Lightweaver, as that is something that tends to be a quality of that order, whereas if they are more interested in science or other school-related things, they might be a Truthwatcher.) 1
