"There's the kind of pain in your voice that people only have when something from the past is still hurting them." Sure, she was quoting Iode here, but he probably wouldn't mind.

"Someone I knew died with a similar wound.  It..." Mica smiling through bloodied teeth, empty eyes, fingers slack.  Free...  "I remembered it a bit, just now."  He's still remembering.

"You couldn't help them?"

"Silent mission.  No medic."  They'd stopped those after Mica died.  It was too expensive.  Even if it was just having Jaya on an earpiece, it was better than nothing because someone was telling him how to help, and he wasn't trapped just holding his friend's hand, unable to do anything.

"What... what kind of wars did you fight?"

"Only one.  It was long."  What's classified, what isn't...  His leg is going to give out at some point.  "I was a kind of special forces soldier."

"Same here, in a way."

"You seem like it wasn't as bad for you."  There was an air a lot of them got as the war went on.  An exhausted, but still dangerous quickness.  Ayia doesn't have that.

He sits down carefully, letting his leg do what it will.

"It wasn't as much a war as it was a resistance."

"Ah."  There's a difference.  His leg throbs again, and so does the base of his skull.  Out of habit, he reaches up to rub at the sore point, before stopping himself.  His hands are filthy, and he doesn't want to wash his hair.

"A... failed resistance. We got nowhere."

"I'm sorry."  The panic of earlier is fading, and now he's just... tired.  "Are you feeling better?"  That's awkward.  And insensitive.

That hasn't happened in fifteen years, so he's pretty sure she means until he's mostly a functional person again.  "Stop calling me that."  Definitely a reflex at this point.

"Well why not?" A smile tugged up her mouth.

"Okay."  He doesn't get it, but she seems to think it's funny.  He prods gently at his shin, trying to see if he can locate where exactly the fracture is.

"Well... what about on the outside? You're telling me that you're completely fine?"

"It'll hold."  Maybe not well, but he can probably get back to camp.

"Is it broken, or...?"

"No, just a fracture.  As long as I'm careful, I can walk.  It's not recommended, but I've done it before."  To be fair, that was his weaker leg, the last time this happened, so he was already used to keeping weight off it.

"I can help you down the mountain, if you want."

"I'll be fine," he says.  "If you need any help, let me know."  She's taller than Reese is, but Reese has a bionic arm.

"For all the good it did."  She had been dying, until Enter got the... medallion thing to her.
