Decrin continued to say nothing, only continued to walk. Eventually, the pair came to a stop at a large rock.

"I got him," whispered Decrin to the figure hiding behind the rock.

"Good," replied Jeffery grimly. "Let's get back. I'm sure the Fellowship will be quite interested to hear of these events."

The shadow engulfed James, matching Vapor push for push. A faint image of the shadow's features became apparent, smiling somewhat maliciously.

"You... have not... suffered an eternity of imprisonment."

The fox gasped, betraying its weakened state.

Vapor stubbornly continued to push, frowning.

"No, but we haven't razed planets or anything."

"Is not... destruction... my right?"

The fox's eyes glowed as it prepared one final strike.

"Child," said James's shadow. "Why do you continue a method that so obviously has failed to bring fruit?"

Can I do it? Just checking to make sure I was getting the clues right.

The post I'd make:

"No." Herate replied. "It's mine."

With those words, Herate stabbed the fox again, this time straight in the chest.

Vale watched and a soft "wait" escaped his lips. But he couldn't place why he had started to care, only just now.

"Excellent," said the shadow, retreating once more to leave James standing alone.

The blade let out a hum of destruction as it pierced the fox's core. Light began to leak from its chest- then, in an explosive burst, from everywhere.

Around on the field, the silver fires dimmed to orange, then went out.

Where the fox had once stood was now only a lump of opalescent metal.

Dang, Herate. Did you just freaking slay the fox demon creature?

Apparently so. With the help of a mordite dagger.

Whoops

As Martin completed the fire rune, a jet of fire weakly shot out. "Good first try"

Herate sheltered behind her arms for the blast. She stood straight and smiled.

Vale dropped his blade. "I can't believe it." Seeing the metal, he asked "What is that?"

Okay.  That's... simultaneously better and worse than he expected.  "I'm going to try it again," he says, sketching his fingers through the air and forcing them to remain steady.

"Excellently done," remarked Psyder.

Note: I think the extensive use of her powers for the past many hours will have caused her withergeist to be very hungry.

Psyder walked over and picked the lump up. "Raw dream crystal residue," he replied. "If I just do this... aha!"

As he held the lump, it turned black.

I've been meaning to ask about that. How does it feel again?

Herate inclined her head. That was mordite, she was certain.

"Yeah?"  Martin asks, hearing Fresco and stopping the rune drawing.

"Oh, hi," he said, "What was your name again? And could someone tell me about this war I'm part of now?"

"My name's Martin.  And we're fighting an evil king."  He thinks that's it, anyway.

"You'd need to ask Fadran or Ayia about that.  I'm just a soldier."
