On the inside, Queen started freaking out. He's going to try to get into my mind? He can't see my thoughts, those are mine! She threw a mental wall around all of her thoughts, strongest around the ones she wanted to hide the most. She managed to stop her frantic mind from skittering around, then did her best to think of nothing but pink fluffy unicorns dancing on rainbows. She couldn't completely clear her mind, but she could just think of something completely useless, which she figured would accomplish the same purpose. Mind prepared, she nodded.

Fadran Forged a Spirit Bond to Queen's mind, ignoring the Bond already in place between the two of them. Anyone actually trying to get into her head probably wouldn't have one of those, so he might as well not use it himself. Bond ready, he forged into her mind.

He was immediately stopped by a powerful mental wall surrounded by what he guessed were her most important thoughts. Some other thoughts were less protected--something to do with unicorns? He ignored these, feeling against the more powerful barriers. They were strong, but fractured in places; weakened by a strong sense of panic. Should he try to break through these? He was suddenly conflicted between his hopes to help teach Queen and preserving her privacy--not to mention the betraying curiosity sneaking around in the shadows of his mind.

Should I have Fadran get in and see her thoughts, or should I not? Methinks this should be your choice, not mine.

Ummm... I dunno. It'd probably make things more interesting if he did, so let's do that.

Queen felt Fadran enter her mind. She suddenly realized that her barriers would be no match for Fadran's mental powers. He had been working at this for years, maybe decades longer than she had. Frantic, Queen tried patching and strengthening the wall, but her anxious pace only made the cracks worse. She tried shoving the thoughts she wanted hidden to the darkest corners of her mind, but the effort brought those thoughts to the front. The thoughts she hadn't even let herself discover. The reason she was acting so different from her normal self, especially around Fadran himself.

She hated to admit it so soon after Journey's death, but twirls, she was starting to develop feelings for this guy. She had to conceal that from him. If he discovered about her what she had only just learned about herself, without giving her time to process those emotions, it would be disastrous! It could ruin the friendship they had developed over the last little while. Using that as her inspiration, Queen did...something. She didn't know what she had done, but her mind cleared of all thoughts. Unfortunately, it was temporary. The thoughts leaked back into her mind, like swirls of mist on a summer day. Unwelcome, yet there nonetheless. In a last, desperate attempt, Queen tore down the wall, flooding Fadran with all of her thoughts, feelings, and impressions, hoping to overwhelm him so that he wouldn't notice the thoughts she wanted--no, needed--to hide.

Quote

Yes, I did just use the word "twirls" as a curse. After writing that, Fadran, I think it'd be best if he's only able to get an impression of her thoughts, but enough of an impression that he's 96% sure of her feelings for him. But do what you think Fadran would have the power to do.

Queendran development time yeeeeeeeee.

I should really figure out how to like...actually join. I have a basic character still, but now I’m doing long backstory for him; and then I started doing backstory for his culture, but then I needed a place for his culture and now I’m just worldbuilding.

Her defenses were weakening; she was anxious.

What do I do? He thought to himself. I can't just read someone else's thoughts! I should've just stuck with combat magic, like I usually teach.

For a moment, though, her mind cleared. It had emptied--become devoid of any way for Fadran to see anything. What had she just done? It had certainly worked, but... clearing thoughts from someone's head entirely? That level of mental capability should've taken years to develop, not days!

But then they were back. The thoughts were back; he could feel them there. So she hadn't become a master in thirteen seconds. He felt a little relieved, then mentally chided himself for feeling so. Feeling relieved that Queen hadn't grasped a technique that had taken him years of practice to develop? Was he seriously jealous of her? What kind of friend did that?

In any case, though... the thoughts were back, and the mental barriers were as weak as ever. Once again, he was conflicted. Was breaking into her mind worth teaching Queen to protect her thoughts? Was he just making excuses for himself?

It didn't matter, apparently.

He almost physically gasped as Queen's thoughts, feelings, impressions--her mind--flooded over him. An old technique that he, too, had learned in his early days of practicing mental protection: overwhelming whoever it was that was trying to break into your mind to try to distract them. Unfortunately, it had a few drawbacks: anybody who had practiced mental intrusion could very well read these thoughts.

He almost read a few on instinct, but caught himself. What was he thinking?

She's desperate! Fadran told himself. I'm in no place to see anything she wants to hide. I should've called this off minutes ago.

Something brushed by his mind, though... something he had never felt before when trying to read another's thoughts. It was unique to her, and directed towards him; though not intentionally. A strong emotion associated with him had found its way into her conscious without her knowing, as they tended to do. What was it? Respect? Happiness? Security? Without thinking, he looked into it.

Holy crem...

Did Queen like him?

Fadran forced himself out of her mind, putting himself back in the physical world. He breathed heavily, eyes half-wide with shock. They were looking right into Queen's.

"I am so sorry." He whispered.

"Tell me what you know of this. Were you there when this one stood silent as a sentence of eternal imprisonment was declared upon the woman that he loved more than his own life? Did you see him drag her to the edge of the abyss as she begged him to reconsider? When he opened the gates that were destined to be her prison did he even shed a tear? Did he beg her forgiveness or even remember her? He left her to rot for eons without giving her a second thought!" A fiery creature rises within him rearing up ready to consume reality in its burning maw of razors. "What of the closest thing he ever had to a son? He too was sentenced to eternal imprisonment in an endless abyss! He spoke not a word as his friend, son, student, and brother was tosses away! He forgot him! He ran from his memory so that he would never again have to think about his failure!" I summon and dismiss various weapons in rapid succession as I speak. "He met new friends who freed him from a prison built to keep reality safe! They were harmed because he was not strong enough to help them fight those who sought to harm them! Some died because he was a failure!" My eyes gaze around wildly as I speak. Now though the full weight of my gaze comes to bear on the woman before me. "Then there is you. I... he swore to protect you and to never allow harm to befall you! He tried to help free you from your demons! He tried to save you from your captors! He... I..." I cannot speak anymore. My rage and pain merge. I am paralyzed as tears pours down my cheeks as my light dims. I hang my head and begin to tremble for a third time. I lack even the strength to wail.

Fox stood paralyzed for a moment by Nath's rage, before walking over to him, and wiping away his tears with the sleeve of her hoodie. She spoke softly, "Yes, you have failed, but that does not make you a failure. You will only be a failure if you allow your past mistakes to prevent you from living. If someone trips on a bump in the road, they do not chop off their foot for hitting the bump, they avoid the bump the next time they walk that way. Do not dwell on what you have done, but on what you will do differently."

I can barely look at her as she speaks. My body is wracked with pangs of agony and sorrow which rattles my very soul to its core. Why doesn't she hate me? She should hate me. How can she act as though I did not lie to her? I feel her wipe away my tears and my heart clenches. MY every cell cries out creating a song and tapestry which echoes through the air. I finally gather the smallest modicum of strength and direct my eyes to hers. "Why don't you hate me? After all that you have heard how can you do anything other than despise me? Please hate me its what I deserve." My head spins all of my strength quickly draining away.

Circestran curses as Winter disappears. Before she can follow she is overwhelmed by her former colleagues from behind the door strike. Two giant birds grab her. She lashes out sheering through their claws like paper. Blood splatters on her golden armor. She roars and space bends around her. Her mind reaches for Winter and she is pulled through realities as though she is on the end of rope. Her body bursts through the darkness and appears behind Winter on the roof of some castle. A rush of agony and sadness assaults her. Despite her mental defenses she is forced back a step. Nath what is happening to you? "Winter we are not done. Today you die." She bares her fangs and brings her blades up to high and low guard. The metal gleams as though light runs through the veins of metal.

"Never." Fox tried to pull Nath back into an embrace. Someone had once shown her that it was possible to look past one's actions, and into the person hiding inside. She was going to give it a try.

I fall into Fox's embrace. "How?" My voice is a whisper which seems to carry with it the secrets of the ages. It floats upon the air grabbing at the very fabric of the universe threatening to unravel existence. The single ever present question strips my soul bare. Every insecurity of my eons long life are brought out from the vaults where they hide. I seem to weaken each moment that these truths are out in the open. My eyes seem to gain an ever more haunted look.

She walked with a brisk pace, passing the rest of the group, headed...somewhere. Anywhere besides here. She shouldn't have agreed to this. She should have asked for combat magic training, then she'd be able to fight, and her private thoughts wouldn't have been compromised.

"Yami, please step inside. I do not know what this woman wants, but she has bothered me enough today."

He pauses, as if listening to something.

"Then I apologize, but you cannot help me in this fight."

Winter seems to gently grab something, placing it on a balcony of a tower above--a shadow? A tear in reality? But whatever he grabbed had no meaning; so it was pointless to care. He turns, facing Cir from the sky, his silver wings catching--no, magnifying the light of the sun above. They seem clear for just a moment, then gold, then silver again.

His bright, yet deep red eyes shone.

"I will kill you now."

Then he was gone.

There was a slight brush of air from behind Cir, and a whisper seemed to taunt her wordlessly in her mind.

Behind you.

She spins away from the feathers, but she is a moment too slow. The edges catch her armor and create a rend in it. In her shock she is caught by the feathers again and a laceration appears in her flesh. Emerald drops fall from the would. Circestran grits her teeth as she ducks under the wings and lunges forward with her blades out.
