Not sure if this has been speculated elsewhere I am not that great at using the search feature on here. I am listening to WoR again and when Shallan first meets him she mentions his strange accent. Knowing he is a world hopper my question is is he from 6th of the disks planet? Or do we even know what planet he is from?

She does not consider him Shin. And that happens to Felt. And he has a babsk. It looks like he at leat grew up in Thaylenah.

I dont think that eliminates him from being an off worlder. Vasher is never described as Shin if I recall correctly

Here are some WoBs on him:

I think it's pretty clear in the book that Mraize is from Thaylenah.

Peter Ahlstrom

And I wasn't being sarcastic or joking when I said I thought it was obvious from the text that Mraize was a Thaylen from Thaylenah.

Mraize is said to come from Thaylenah. If it is true, then what about his eyebrows? 'Cause we didn't see any related descriptions from Shallan's PoVs. Did he cut/shave/dye his eyebrows?

Brandon Sanderson

Mraize...well, let's just say that much about him is mysterious. But no, you would not place him as Thaylen by his eyebrows.

So, I was hoping to get a confirmation on Mraize's age?

Brandon Sanderson

I'd probably-- Well, what did I say before?

Khyrindor

Not sure, I was just asking the question.

Brandon Sanderson

Okay good, I didn't think that I had confirmed this. I'm going to RAFO it.

Khyrindor

Like, is he older than a normal person?

Brandon Sanderson

I will RAFO it, yeah. Let's say though, that, though he has been off-world, he himself is a Rosharan.

Khyrindor

A Roshar native?

Brandon Sanderson

Yeah.

Yeah but I know what you mean. I thought he wasn't really Thaylen too. I looked it up on the Coppermind and the Arcanum and was quite surprised when I found out. Maybe Mraize is from way before the Thaylenah of today, maybe even during the dawn of the Silver Kingdoms, who knows (yet)?

Vasher is a Returned with considerable shapeshifting capabilities.

That's funny. I knew this, but until you said it, it never really occurred to me that Zahel might look very different from the Vasher we met in Warbreaker (or the way he looked most of the time at least). He's already suppressing his Returned form. No reason he wouldn't try to blend in by looking extremely Alethi. Totally changes my mental picture.

Are we sure his shapeshifting abilities are "considerable"? I mean, you're probably right about him being able to look like being from an other ethnic group, but would he be able to look like another person? I mean, is Zahel just Vasher with darker skin and smaller eyes or is he completely unrecognizable?

In Warbreaker,

Spoiler

Lightsong and the other Returned look how a god would ideally look in their culture: inhumanly tall & beautiful. In the case of some Returned, they looked older (Allmother) or much younger (Hopefinder).

Vasher & Denth can decrease their height to look like normal humans. And since the Royal Locks of Idris comes from the Returned, as Vasher indicates, they can change their hair colour as well (which we see Denth do reflexively at the end). They can also probably change their physical age.

The way Susebron reacted to Vasher makes me think that Vasher could alter his features as well not just his height and glowy-ness (or lack thereof).

The cult of the Returned was already present in Hallandren when Vasher & the other Five Scholars Returned, which means that they too probably looked drop-dead gorgeous, which Vasher and Denth do not. Denth seems to hint that being able to alter his features has been helpful in the past. Lightsong's transformation would indicate they might also be able to alter their body shape.

Denth's Speed

Yes, Denth is inhumanly fast. He's a Returned, after all, and has all of the physical enhancements that come with that. Even when he's chosen not to manifest most of them, he's still got an edge, just like Vasher does.

How do they hide that they're Returned? Well, it comes down to mastery of their ability to change their appearance. They can't shape-shift entirely; they can just alter some things about their appearance. They can change their weight, their hair color, and things like that at will. Vasher doesn't do this often, but Denth has been known to use it as a disguise. The problem, after you do this once and someone realizes it, your nature becomes very suspect.

They have learned to suppress their divine Breath. This allows them to hide, but they must be careful never to give away all of their Breath. Denth has been a Drab before—he's not completely lying—but never for longer than a few days. And his divine Breath is always there, suppressed. So he doesn't know what it's like to be a true Drab, which is why in this chapter he says he doesn't think it changes you that much. He's never felt it.

Warbreaker Annotations (Oct. 26, 2010)

I personally think of it as each returned having a really good group of Hollywood level make up artists on hand+a little extra.

Minus the artificiality. And without the crazy nonsense. I can't see a Returned making themself look like Killer Croc. But if you can change your weight with any level of localised precision you can massively change your face shape to the point it's borderline unrecognizable.

I wasn't disagreeing persae. Just, Hollywood makeup always reads as fake. I would guess an experienced Returned would be much less noticable.
