Toaster Retribution he/him Posted February 1, 2020 Posted February 1, 2020 Mraize seems to have grabbed a position as a close bodyguard to Ialai in OB. He stands at her side and is carrying her chair to a meeting. This despite that he behaves quite strange (wandering around with a chicken and a super-scarred face). So how did he get such a position in Sadeas household so quickly? Or do we think that he spied on the Sadeases for a long time?
Honorless he/him Posted February 1, 2020 Posted February 1, 2020 It isn't difficult to imagine that Mraize would have a lot of skills that people like those of House Ialai might appreciate. He's probably skilled enough to ingratiate himself at an opportune moment or already had an in with House Sadeas.

In fact that may be the reason he is using an Aviar. 6

I am almost certain that the aviar is for detecting the investiture(in this case the unmade) kind of like mistborn Spoiler bronze He might be one of the spies that Ialia employs and as such has worked for her for some time. Remember she supposedly has one of the largest networks. 1

Also if people start to ID him by his chicken then he can easily go undercover by just leaving it at home. Edited February 2, 2020 by Karger

SwordNimiForPresident the sword/that sword Posted February 3, 2020 Posted February 3, 2020 Mraize is actually the chicken. He moves between human carriers to keep tabs on all of the factions. He just scratches their faces up really bad so they all look the same. 10

I always remember reading this, but have struggled to see how Ialai benefited from this during my readings. Makes me wonder what all of her spies were doing. My memory is bad and need to do a reread again, but if I recall she doesn't treat Mraize like he's somebody important, and Mraize tells Shallan that he's just there to keep an eye on them but that Ialai isn't really connected to the Ghostbloods, which in my opinion would have boosted the reputation points of her spy network. 1

If he is undercover then there really is no reason to treat him like something special. In fact the reverse seems much more likely. 6 hours ago, Rock's Stew said: Makes me wonder what all of her spies were doing Keeping track of Dalinar and Co as well as her "allies." Remember, no trust is actually involved in the Sadeas coalition.

If he made himself uniquely useful to Sadeas and Ialai, they would want to have him around a lot. And we see Mraize frequently elsewhere. It's not hard to imagine him using Ghostbloods connections and very possibly various forms of off-world Connection forming or Soothing/Rioting-type magic to get a position in the same guard outfit as would be assigned close duty to Ialai, and then draw that day's assignment. 1

Actually conversely that would sound super likely to me. Using connections and abilities to become a close guard to Ialai, and then arrange to be assigned for that day that Adolin is coming to speak to Ialai. Mraize can get messages onto Shallan without her noticing and she is a radiant. They were able to track her movements in an occupied city that had two Unmade present, and was taken by the enemy force. They were able to track her movements enough to know she made contact with Sja-anat and that she is amendable to change sides. So I do not think it would be very difficult for Mraize to arrange someone watching Ialai, and when he knew Adolin and Shallan would be confronting her, he take that spot. For all we know the ghostbloods have a limited access to future sight as well. 1

That was my impression. He used his resources magical and mundane to insinuate himself into the Sadeas house guards. I don’t know why they let him walk around with a bird while on duty, but Sadeas’ troops are notoriously undisciplined in general. Don’t follow the codes or even their dress code very closely.
