I've been digging through the arcanum lately and found this gem.

Another note here is that Nightblood can sense where Vasher is. This is because Nightblood has ingested and fed off Vasher's Breaths in the past. When he does that, it connects him to someone. It's also, by the way, one of the secrets as to why Vasher doesn't get sick when holding Nightblood, even though he's a good person. It's not simply familiarity (though that is part of it). Nightblood has a built-in test. If he feeds off you and you survive, then you become somewhat immune to his powers.

Warbreaker Annotations (June 22, 2011)

Doea this mean that after the battle of thayelean Szeth wont be risking death every time he uses Nightblood? Does anyone who's read Warbreaker more recently than I remember what happens when Vasher draws it?

Szeth is immune to Nightblood killing him offhand and will probably always know where he is, just like Vasher.  However Nightblood is an equal opportunity eater. Nobody holding him is safe from him once he's unsheathed, bond or no. At most he'll gobble up Investiture reserves before feeding directly on the person if he's bonded to them.

'Somewhat immune' in this case means that you don't get the sick to your stomach reaction when around Nightblood but it does not mean you're immune to dying if Nightblood eats the Investiture that makes up your soul. Vasher was at risk of death when he drew Nightblood in Warbreaker (in fact, this is what Denth wanted to happen) and Szeth remains at risk if he ever draws Nightblood without a sufficient supply of Stormlight handy.

He might be able to let go of Nightblood in a similar situation to Theylen field but if he holds on too long he will die.

That means there's an easy way to find where Lift is too haha.

Wait if you chucked Nightblood into a Shard, would he be able to track the Shard indefinitely? Or just while the Shard's Vessel remained the same?

I just want to point out that the tracking mechanism might be a reaction to the destroy evil command. He could use this to destroy greater evil that he couldn't kill off the first time

Of course.  See if your lunch is missing.  If it is she is in the area.

Shards are omnipresent.

So then you can just chuck it anywhere! :D Just having NB on the world might allow him to track the Shard.

In a theoretical capacity, yes. But at some points there will doubtless be a congealing of power as they focus their efforts somewhere and that could be what Nightblood would track.

I guess he might be able to tell you about a perpendicularity if he got close enough...

Given that Shards warp the realms by their Physical/Cognitive 'presence' even if Nightblood could form a connection with a Shard to track it, it would be completely redundant. If you're in even roughly the right part of the Cognitive Realm and know what to look for, you can locate their nexus.

Still hilarious to try. Imagine a game of keep-away, only it's the Shard trying to keep away from an implacable Radiant with Nightblood running around the Cognitive.
