Karger he/him Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 I was rereading Way of Kings and then I saw this From WoKs Quote Captainlord Malan,” Adolin bellowed. “Take your soldiers, go with this man. Get my father out!” and then I though that is odd. Malan sounds a lot like Melaan. Wait a minute... Dude's dead, and there was probably a body due to Dalinar's certainty. Quote "This is troubling," Dalinar said. "We face a terrible threat that would wipe our kind from Roshar like leaves before the stormwall. I don't have enough time to worry about a murderer slinking through these tunnels." He looked at Adolin. "Most of the men I'd have assigned to an investigation like this are dead. Niter, Malan ..."

I find it difficult to think that a kandra would choose to die in the middle of a large fight like that. Unless you were talking about them voluntarily keeping their shape when the body "dies," in which case I just want to mention that Malan was likely lighteyed, which meant they would have Soulcast the body to stone anyway, which would have its own issues.
RShara she/her Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 MeLaan doesn't really seem like she would particularly be interested in going undercover on Roshar. And her behavior in SoS and BoM doesn't really seem to indicate that she's an experienced worldhopper. 1
Halyo_Alex he/him Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 It's probably another naming coincidence, like how Malata sounds like the perfect name to have the god-metal of Malatium, but we know that's an alloy of Atium and Gold.

They could have a confirmed report of his death. This could be why Dalinar is so certain. 6 hours ago, RShara said: MeLaan doesn't really seem like she would particularly be interested in going undercover on Roshar. They wouldn't have made a confirmed report without some visual evidence of a body, and if it were to be MeLaan, she probably wouldn't have stayed still for long enough for that report to be confirmed dead.

If he was not accounted for during the evacuation of Narak they would have considered him dead. The probably also see Nazh as dead.

In particular Dalinar, considering he must have trusted Malan a fair amount to even consider putting him on an investigation like that, would have wanted to be somewhat optimistic about the missing people's fate in front of other people.

RShara she/her Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 Erm. But the kandra is already on Roshar, and Hoid only just received the Letter from Harmony. Who was shocked at the correspondence. 1

Also, how long Hoid has been on Roshar isn't really relevant. The point was the timing of the Letter, and the time the kandra has been on Roshar, indicating it's not likely for Hoid and the kandra to have met prior to that point or for the kandra currently on Roshar to have been sent specifically to meet Hoid. When Amaram sees Hoid in WOR he makes a comment along the lines of "So this is the new Wit..." that would indicate that Hoid has been the Wit for at most 7 years. Judging by how Dalinar and Adolin initially react to him I would guess it is much less time than that. That doesn't rule out the possibly that Hoid was on Roshar longer doing other things but still the implication is he hasn't been there that long. Edit: @RShara beat me to the same point regarding the letters. Removed. Edited October 16, 2019 by The Sovereign
