Ack you guys go fast :P

Deteca joined the influx and sat by Eiran, looking behind her for Tena, until her attention was captured by the holograph Lusk showed them. Her mouth opened slightly as she stared at it - and then closed, her lips pressing together. She could swear she'd seen something like that before...

Mac glanced at the Holograph, questions flying throughout his mind, but first and foremost, he needed to know the layout of the building. Coughing gently, he asked "Lusk, do you know where this was in the building? What kind of measuring equipment was around it, and any computer systems or papers about it?" While he was sure that this was the thing that had alerted Voidus during their training meeting, it was possible that it was different. At the very least studying it could provide important information about plasmacore's goals.

Laurelai watched with increasing concern as a number of figures stepped into the room, someone from the Ghostbloods which caused her to immediately begin planning how best to collapse the roof without hitting herself, followed by the head of TUBA, and finally four figures from the DA, one of which she didn't recognize but could make a guess given the company she kept.

They began seating themselves around the room as the Ghostblood gave a presentation about what they'd found at Plasmacore, but Laurelai kept her eyes fixed to the group from the DA. She was curious why they were there and concerned that it might be something that she'd done, terrified once again that she may have brougt some horrible harm upon herself.

Voidus seemed to briefly catch her gaze for a moment as he scanned the room, and the corner of his mouth twitched ever so slightly into what seemed to be a grimace before immediately settling again. That definitely wasn't good, was he snarling at her? Or disappointed? Or just eager for bloodshed? She didn't know him as well as she did Mac but he didn't seem the type to relish in violence for violence's sake, but then why did his expression seem to contort like that?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Voidus followed the others into the room, his eyes were distant as he tried to keep a firm hold over himself. His heart was still beating erratically due to the close encounter with HR, and as he stepped into the building it began to speed up again. He calmly took a seat and cast his gaze over the room, ignoring the Ghostblood as he began a presentation. It didn't take long before he saw her, he tried to keep it brief, pausing only briefly to give her a quick look over, but as he did so he could feel the instinctive urge to smile pulling at his lips. He struggled to force his face to stillness but was sure she must have seen him grinning widely at her.

Keep it under control. We can't have anyone else getting suspicious and snooping around. Although come to think of it, if there are no other survivors then it wouldn't matter if they saw would it? There are a lot of dangerous creatures in the city at the moment, if one small bar happened to vanish in the middle of all this would anyone pay too much attention? And it would let me have a minute to ourselves.

The light around his hand began to flicker and dim as he drew closer to the Void, expression somewhat contemplative as he continued to scan the room.

Lita turned away from the Ghostblood leader and his holographic image when Voidus, Mac, and the Stranger stepped fully into the diner. All three seemed strangely shaken - though what could possibly rattle all three of them, Lita had no idea. She pushed her tin back to a near-flare, listening for heartbeats. Unnervingly, the DA woman in the back had no heartbeat. Lita tried not to think too hard about that, listening instead to the other three. Two began to calm as they settled in to listen, but a third sped up again - hard

What? Lita looked at them out of the corner of her eye, following their gazes. Mac was fixated on the hologram, asking pointed questions. His breathing was coming even, now. Not him, then. It was impossible to tell what the Stranger was looking at, though he, too, seemed to relax. Her gaze moved to Voidus, watching a vein in his throat pulse hard and rapid beneath his pale skin.

Found you, she thought, listening to her own heart begin beating faster too. This was risky - not quite as risky as eavesdropping back in Alley 0, but risky nonetheless. Voidus's mouth twitched as he looked their way; Lita tried to follow his line of sight without moving her head.

Rusts, what are you staring at? His light eyes pierced a spot over her shoulder, pupils dilating slightly. Lita looked next to her, only spotting Laurelai, who was staring back over Lita's shoulder with poorly-concealed terror. What in the name of the Survivor was going on here?

Lita looked back at Voidus, muscles in her eyes aching from all the strain on her peripheral vision. An odd darkening shuddered around one of his hands, and the Coin in her palm started to burn hot again. She squeezed it in her hand, wondering when her brassmind would melt off her arm from all the heat she was storing. Her thumb brushed the raised faces - even hidden in her hand, Lita could tell that at least one side showed the sun, and the other, the scales?

Odd pairing for a time like this, Lita thought, worried. Had Laurelai angered Voidus in some way? Was he about to kill the lot of them in some kind of guilt-by-association execution? Her other hand shook slightly, and she squeezed the Coin again, willing it to do...what? Protect her?

I can transport back into an Alley, she thought wildly. Maybe I could take Laurelai too? Did it work that way? How much trouble would she be in for abandoning a mission? The darkness around Voidus's hand continued to deepen, and she cast one true, frightened look at the Stranger, willing him to notice. But what did he care? Maybe he'd find it enjoyable to watch his old friend obliterate this place. After all, it was full of enemies. Rust, rust, rusting hell. She looked at Mac next. Mac wouldn't want Laurelai dead, would he?

How was no one else noticing this?

Mac felt Voidus' attention focus on something, then watched as the area near him grew darker as Voidus drew closer to the void.

Mac glanced around to see what he was looking at, and saw Laurelai. Aww storming heck. Seriously? He was almost as bad as some new recruits. If he Voidmade in here He was going to not only cause a guild war and permanently scar his daughter as well, but also bring HR down their backs for sharing protected secrets.

He needed to stop him. Unfortunately.

Quickly Mac ran through his options. He needed something subtle and humane. That ruled out contingency [REDACTED] and summoning HR.

Storm it, those were his best options. He needed to see if anyone else had noticed. He quickly scanned the room and it didn't seem like anyone was focusing on him or his question yet, wait, Lita had noticed what was going on.

 Storms, this couldn't be contained.

Regardless this might be his only chance, he would have to cut his losses. Maybe bendalloy.

That could work. He had that on him right?

Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out two vials, careful to hide them from anyone watching. He quickly, but carefully pressed an A-Bendalloy spike into his thigh, and then whispered quietly enough that no one would hear except for Lita: "Everything's fine, nothing is happening." With that he downed the second vial and started burning bendalloy. Counting the seconds in his head he quickly said "Voidus, don't. You will damage her if you try anything."

2 seconds had passed, barely a fourth of a second had passed outside.

“Our scouts haven’t sent back anything regarding machinery,” Lusk said, noticing the edges of the room begin to grow dark. Probably the influx of powerful beings here. Lusk grimaced, he wouldn’t mind if this entire building got destroyed, including him, but he sure as storms wanted to finish his speech before it happened.

“But they did come into contact with one of the scientists, and on his person were found letters of importance about what PlasmaCore was doing. He pressed some more buttons on the device and the hologram switched from a picture of the Vortex to a rendering of the two letters that had been photographed by Zokora.

He turned to the man who’d let him in.

“Yes, we’ve tracked the name to Lord Ajax, supposedly the leader of this whole Vortex scenario.” He narrowed his eyes at the man. “But now the Ghostbloods have revealed their information, what about TUBA?” And then the DA, he implied, but getting then to reveal what they knew would be a challenge he’d save for later. Hopefully they would understand why knowledge needed to be shared, but then again, it was the DA. He would be surprised if they even considered the Vortex a worthy issue to tackle.

Voidus was lost in idle thought as he continued scanning the room, trying not to pause for too long he let his eyes settle on others as well, though even then he used his periphery vision to try to see her.

Of course she might be a little shocked if everyone else suddenly vanishes. And do I tell her? If I didn't then she wouldn't know what was happening, but if I did then she might not believe it.

He noticed a slight temporal shift and immediately became alert, his eyes rapidly scanned the room, checked that she was safe, and then continued to scan, looking for the source.

"Voidus, don't. You will damage her if you try anything." Mac's voice called out in the accelerated time, speaking low and fast.

Hmm?

There was a brief moment of confusion as he wondered what Mac was talking about. Had he noticed someone from HR again?

And then Voidus saw the gathering darkness surrounding his own figure.

Ah. Right. Idle thoughts.

He quickly dismissed the darkness, allowing light to flow through the area normally once more. He said nothing in reply to Mac, simply waiting for time to resume its normal passage. Though he did berate himself mentally.

Rookie mistake, this is exactly what you were trying to teach him about keeping control over your thoughts and now you've lost control twice in one day.

He turned his gaze back to the Ghostblood who seemed to be wrapping up his speech and tried to look interested.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Laurelai stood, pinned to the spot and frozen with fear. She watched as the room seemed to darken around them, almost imperceptibly to start with but gradually and menacingly increasing. She watched as Voidus' eyes seemed to flicker past her and regard the rest of the room as well but somehow she still felt that he was keeping an eye on her. Trying to make sure she didn't escape? Letting her know he was watching?

Her breathing quickened under the attention and a knot of panic began to form in her chest as she tried to think of what she could possibly have done wrong. Had they taken too long? Was it because they weren't disguised?

And then suddenly the room became light again, as though all that darkness had simply been a trick of the mind. And as her eyes darted up to watch Voidus again she saw that he seemed to simply be watching the presentation.

What the rusts was that all about?

Posted

Mac breathed a sigh of relief as the Void nearly immediately was dispersed. He stopped the bendalloy immediately. Only a little over two seconds had passed, good. With that potential mass destruction averted Mac began to listen to the presentation again. The letters were interesting,  but the actual information they contained wasn't very much. Combined with their current knowledge about the initial burst that caused Voidus to pay attention, he could see why it's purpose would corrupt that of the void.

Still, they would need to perform some measurements to be sure about what its purpose and goal was, and maybe through that they would be able to see what plasmacore's goal was.

Zokora cursed as soon as Lusk was gone. He’d left her. Left her alone on this bridge. She closed her eyes, counted to five, then opened them. Only staring at the device she used to report to Althea, she typed a report, attached everything she might need and then added a plea for her to come, to leave whatever she was doing to someone else. She was alone on this ship, probably now in charge of directing their troops, of supervising them. With Lusk gone there was no one left to do it. Alone with the ghosts and the space marines. She send the report, prayed for Althea to come, to be able to come and then stared at the screens Lusk had observed. She saw the city, their troops, saw where some of them got in trouble and were killed, and saw others succeed, kill the monsters instead. Hesitating she reached out for the controls directed a squad to help another one. It was easy, and she smiled when she saw how the monster lost and her men won. There was something to standing here, in control, mighty and powerful. A shadow passed behind her, but she only barely noticed it, concentrated on the controls instead. The guns n’ ninjas were still questioning the scientist, maybe they could learn something from him as well. Another shadow, this time closer and she whirled around.

A woman stared at her with wide eyes. Her throat was open, her eyes empty. And dark. She reached out for her, her hands thin and like those of a skeleton. Zokora stared at them, saw them move closer and closer and then she screamed, screamed and scrambled backwards…

Her hands hit the control panel and she whirled around, quickly stopped whatever she had accidently started. Looking over her shoulder the woman was still there, her hands closed around her throat, pressed and pressed. Zokora touched her skin, forced herself to breath, even though it felt like she was dying. The woman vanished and she leaned forward, pressed her hands against the panel, gasped for breath. Lusk didn’t know, she’d never told him, or the council. Only Althea knew. A list she needed a list. She needed something to hold on, something she could control. They would vanish once she was in control, once things were organized again. Whimpering when a man stepped towards her, his skin pale, a deep wound in his neck, where she had showed a knife up to his brain. They always told you, that you would forget, that the faces would blur. But they never had. They followed her around, they were always there. She never had learned how to detach herself. Once she observed someone for a while, got to know them, they would follow her around. At first it was only a shadow now and then, but now they were here, they were with her. Especially at places where ghosts lived. Like here, on this ship with its creatures, where the rules of mankind had been turned upside down. He stabbed her and she doubled over, a hand pressed against her stomach. With shaking fingers she took out a pencil and started to write a list.

Look after the troops. Make sure as much people as possible get evacuated.

Rely any information to Lusk.
Keep Althea up to date.
Breathe.
Send an Underling to Oasis to fetch my folder. Maybe there is some kind of emergency protocol I can follow in there.

She started with point five. That one was easy. The woman stared at her surprised, but she rushed of, when Zokora snapped at her. Point four was harder, but she managed. Point 3 and 2 were already done, that left her with point 1. Zokora concentrated on what she was seeing, changed a few of Lusk’s orders, to distribute their forces better. She didn’t care if they were helping TUBA or a single individual. It was about the people. She was surprised, that Lusk had send many to the Bakery district, and left them there. It was about the people, not about guilds, at least not for her.  There were times when you had to care politics and times when you had to focus on what was really important.

“Everything is fine, nothing is happening.”

Mac’s measured whisper sliced through Lita’s growing panic, and even before she could glance at him, the darkness at the corner of her eye dissipated like it was never there.

Lita risked a full glance at Laurelai, who looked very pale, even paler than usual, her light blonde hair curving down over one ear. Lita twirled her pen, sending the woman a message while turning back to the hologram and pretending to pay attention.

What was that about? Are you alright?

Lusk paused in what he was saying, looking between the DA members. A slight blur from the powerful ones, a quick glance between the not-so powerful ones, something was going on. And a life spent disciplining underlings told Lusk when something off was going on.

He smiled, trying to practise his deduction skills. He hadn’t done that in a while. The darkness was Voidus’ anger? He looked at some of the DA members when it had grown dark, maybe he wanted to end them. Maybe they were a traitor? But then why would he hesitate? And then why would the darkness go away?

So, he was conflicted about killing the DA people. Which either meant he wanted to kill them but knew he couldn’t, or he didn’t want to kill them but knew it needed to be done. Lusk knew there was very few things the DA couldn’t do, so it had to be the latter. But why would Voidus feel the need to kill some DA members?

“If we could keep our destructive tendencies aside for a second,” he said, looking pointedly at Voidus. “It would really be appreciated.”

Eiran didn't pay too much attention to the DA members. Every guild had their internal politics, some more than others--it wasn't his place to watch and judge.

"Share everything," Eiran recommended softly to Deteca. Everything as in everything. Even the things that hadn't happened yet and might not happen. Everything everything. "Don't feel a need to hold back anything."

He sat back in his seat, hands holding a warm cup of tea. TUBA might not have had as much solid information as the Ghostbloods, but they did have information the others likely had not known about.

The fate of the Alleyverse depended on how this went, to an extent. The number of poor outcomes decreased greatly when they shared everything. There still were many not so pleasant futures, but he hoped the decrease meant an increase in positive ones.

Posted (edited)

Deteca tried not to let her flutter of annoyance when Mac spiked himself show. He's not bleeding anywhere and he's spiking his leg, not that of any TUBAists, so it's his business. Making a big deal out of it will just slow this whole thing down. So she didn't say anything when a time bubble flickered over there. Fine. She was just happy that it seemed to make the blackness at the edges of the room and around the Dark Alley's leader stop. She had a feeling that could have gone very wrong very quickly.

She listened to the Councilman, Lusk, and when he noted that the Ghostbloods had revealed their information and now it was TUBA's turn, she nodded - at him and at Eiran, and she smiled at Eiran too - and stood up.

And then she definitely said things, but I need a minute to determine what things. I'll edit if no one's posted when I come back.

“If we could keep our destructive tendencies aside for a second,” The Ghostblood said, looking Voidus' way. “It would really be appreciated.”

Voidus arched an eyebrow in reply, momentarily distracted from his previous thoughts. He could count on one hand the number of times anyone outside of the department heads had spoken to him like that in recent decades. His admiration at the Ghostbloods courage was almost enough to quell his irritation. Almost.

"If I had destructive tendencies then your guild would have been destroyed when it attempted to invade the city two decades ago." Voidus replied. "Tell me. Were you a part of that ill-conceived plan?"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Laurelai was still breathing rapidly, her skin still felt cold like she'd just been doused in icy water. But at least she wasn't being stared at anymore, the immediate promise of danger had faded, though she was sure that the discussion was not over for good. She'd likely be called away from all the other guilds at some point to answer for whatever she'd done wrong. There would be no point in running, they'd be able to Alleytravel far faster and more efficiently than she could. Then the only solution was to try to pile up some achievements to offset whatever problems she'd caused and hope she could balance things out.

She felt the twitch of an arriving message as she tried to think her way out of the dilemma, the familiar process of translating it helped give her something to focus on.

What was that about? Are you alright? Lita sent.

Laurelai considered lying, or pretending that she was fine. But Lita was a tineye, and Laurelai's heartbeat was probably almost audible without Allomantic assistance. It was also possible that Lita might be able to provide another perspective or some additional insight.

I have no idea. She signed back. He seemed fine the last time we spoke. They even told us to stay safe during that last message.

She didn't know which of them had sent it, it may even have come from someone else in the DoCI. But surely they would have said if she'd done something wrong right? But Voidus was the only one who'd looked like that, the others all seemed composed enough. Could it have been a secret? Or could this be what the message had been referring to? Had Mac known she'd done something to upset Voidus and tried to warn her? Possible but it didn't seem likely. He could have said something a little less cryptic if that were the case.

She shook her head for a moment and looked back to the Ghostblood leader, trying to catch what he'd been talking about. Not listening to a critically important mission briefing seemed like a sure way to worsen her situation.

“If we could keep our destructive tendencies aside for a second,” The Ghostblood leader said, looking towards one corner of the room. “It would really be appreciated.”

Laurelai briefly winced, already aware of what lay in the path of the Ghostbloods gaze and who he must be talking about. She gave the Ghostblood an astonished glance, arching one eyebrow in surprise.

He's got to be a lot stronger, braver or stupider than he looks. I'm just not sure which one, or which one would be the worst for the rest of us.

Lusk continued looking towards Voidus, but out of his peripheral vision he caught one of the less powerful DA denizens arching an eyebrow as well. Huh, he thought, attention back to the god in front him. Same reaction.

“No, actually,” Lusk said, simply. This was a person he couldn’t overpower, couldn’t challenge authority of. His forty-one years was nothing compared to thousands. But, he met Voidus’ gaze and tried to play his cards as best he could. He tried to keep his voice cool and calm, emphasising each word.

“However, for an ‘ill-conceived plan’, I very distinctly remember the ‘all-powerful’ creator of the universe trapped within a cage for 16 years.”

But, veiled daggers weren’t going to win this battle. He had gotten Voidus’ attention, now it was time to divert that to the issue at hand. The image of the Vortex flickered into view again, and Lusk stepped back to give a better view of it.

“But speaking of ill-conceived, the enemy’s crown jewel, this... Vortex, is not. Excuse for thinking that such power is your domain, or rather your guilds, is it not?” He finally broke eye contact with Voidus and looked at the hologram.

“And yet, I see it in the hands of a random organisation, newly formed and already attacking the city with unprecedented levels of force. I can’t help but think this may be a security concern, or am I reading too far into it?”

Edited by I think I am here.
Oof, Lusk’s... one of the three things Laurelai mentioned. Can’t tell which though :P

Voidus' eyebrow dropped and he stared impassively at Lusk for several heartbeats. His expression didn't alter in the slightest, but he seemed to be wavering between two options, teetering until finally he quirked a small smile.

"You know I think I might like you." He said as the oppressive air around him diminished once more. "But to set a few things straight: I've never claimed to be all powerful, and the reason I was as you say 'trapped within a cage for 16 years' was because breaking out of that cage would have let out everything within it, not merely myself."

But I missed 16 years of her life due to that incident. Perhaps I should have just broken it immediately after all, let those guilds that wanted to liberate the city try to take a shot at protecting it. Then again there was no way to know at the time. And it might have simply placed her in further danger if I didn't know.

For a fraction of an instant his gaze flickered to Laurelai before returning to Lusk.

"This 'Security concern' would also already be dealt with had we not agreed to allow others to make the attempt first." He continued, gesturing towards those present from TUBA. "But if the rest of the city is no longer a concern then I'd be happy to take a more active approach in cleaning up."

His smile widened just a little further before he directed a questioning glance towards those present from TUBA.

It would be far easier, faster than leaving it to them and less tedious than dealing with it ourselves. Perhaps start with something small scale, project Phoenix was kept somewhere near the city, that would have been a nice start. Something of a nice spectacle for the city as well.

Posted

Deteca stopped right before speaking, cautiously watching the back-and-forth and hoping to the God Beyond that this wouldn't lead to a fight. "The rest of the city is still a concern, thank you," she said finally. "And will continue to be for as long as it's here."

All seemed to be going well until Voidus dropped his eyebrow and Lusk felt chills as the god stared into him, eyes like they were hemalurgic spikes themselves, piercing into his soul. When he finally let out a small smile, Lusk tried his best to return it, slowly exhaling.

“You know I think I might like you,” Voidus said.

That’s a first, Lusk thought, but didn’t say anything as Voidus continued. Of course, Lusk already knew the details about how and why Voidus was trapped, the Ghostbloods had done substantial research in the area. However, the mention of ‘let everything out with it’ seemed to confirm the theory that there was some creature or creatures with him in it. So far, their only evidence of that had been one witness, all the way back at the Seven Day War.

“Agreed,” Lusk said in response to TUBA’s statement. “Although there’s no doubt the DA have the resources to take care of this, we have chosen to give our information on the Vortex because we want the most efficient solution that does not involve more collateral damage than it has to. We all care for the city, but the only way to remove PlasmaCore the fastest without levelling every other building in the process is to work together, and part of that is sharing information, and...”

He stopped. How much were the Ghostbloods ready to team up? They had already given valuable information and had sent evacuation vehicles to districts that didn’t concern them, but were they ready to go all in?

“...And resources.”

He looked to the TUBA representative. “I believe you had some information to share?”
