I've been re-reading the Cosmere the last few months and I just got onto my Oathbringer reread. This time around I caught something that I hadn't seen talked about so I figured I'd point it out;

When Shallan is exploring Kholinar as Veil she encounters Hoid telling the story of Mishim. He recognizes her through her illusion. Shallan comments that Hoid has a white and black jar in his satchel. This is a jar of White Sand and is likely how he identified her since the Kinetic Investiture of her illusion would change the sand's color.

That could be it, which actually would make a lot more sense than what I thought he was doing (burning bronze) but out of curiosity, why would the sand not have changed color for his Lightweaving, only for Shallan's? (It's been a while since I read White Sand, so I'm fuzzy on the details)

@The Sovereign That’s actually been noticed multiple times before (I feel like there was a thread about this at some point in the past couple weeks, but I can’t remember for sure), but it’s still impressive that you figured it out for yourself!

@Invocation That’s actually a good point. The only thing I can think of to explain it is that Hoid’s Lightweaving, since it’s a weaker version than the Surgebinding form, uses very little Investiture so the sand can’t absorb any of it to turn white.

That's the thing, I don't think it is weaker. I think he just uses it more subtly, building off of dust and stuff to assist his stories so that it isn't noticed. I mean he can change the color of Shallan's room-size illusion, but out of all the things he can do, massive Lightweavings would ruin his covers more than anything else.

If there's a WOB that Yolish Lightweaving is weaker, though, please show me, because that would mean some interesting things for the rest of Yolish magic that might remain.

@Invocation Here’s the relevant WoB:

Where you *inaudible* Hoid as a Lightweaver in Era 2?

Brandon Sanderson[PENDING REVIEW]

Hoid was a Lightweaver in Dragonsteel.

Stormlightning[PENDING REVIEW]

I mean a spren Lightweaver. Unless the timeline's still, really--

Brandon Sanderson[PENDING REVIEW]

Meaning was I planning for him to become a Lightweaver?

Stormlightning[PENDING REVIEW]

Before Era 2 since we thought Era 2 was going to be Era 3.

Brandon Sanderson[PENDING REVIEW]

Hoid has never quite stopped being a Lightweaver. He is very happy to be fully empowered with things.

Stormlightning[PENDING REVIEW]

Does that mean he was not fully a Lightweaver?

Brandon Sanderson[PENDING REVIEW]

You will find out someday. His magic was not fully functional, but he was Lightweaving in Way of Kings

Skyward release party (Nov. 6, 2018)

I guess it’s not explicitly weaker, but that’s how I interpret “not fully functional.”

@Invocation I remember (but cannot find) a WoB about him being happy to have "full access" to Lightweaving.  Here's the closest I could find, that he is not "fully empowered" and that his previous magic was not "fully functional":

As for the scene in Kholinar, do we know for sure that he was Lightweaving his disguise (it's been a while since I've read Oathbringer)?  He frequently uses more mundane methods of concealment.

Whelp, @Scion of the Mists beat me to it.

EDIT: or, well, my ipad just glitched, actually. <_<

Here you go. The search terms were "happy+Hoid" :D

Stormlightning [PENDING REVIEW]

If Hoid could have picked to join any order of the Knights Radiant, regardless of the Oaths he had to swear, just the powers, would he have picked Lightweaver?

Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW]

He would have.

Stormlightning [PENDING REVIEW]

Tell me more!

Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW]

Lightweaving matches him very well, he's quite familiar with it and experienced with it. He's very good at using it and he likes it.

It's the fulfillment of a long, long quest of his to finally get full access to Lightweaving.

Stormlightning [PENDING REVIEW]

Even though he had some sort of Lightweaving?

Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW]

He did have some sort of, yes. He's a very very happy Hoid.

FanX 2018 (Sept. 7, 2018)

My theory on this would be that the version of Lightweaving he uses is either lower powered or just more subtle than Shallan's. Just like how Shallan's surges are quieter than Kaladin's.
