He shrugged. “Our colony is a couple thousand. Not huge. Not tiny.”

They got to the other side. The majority of the buildings were rock pillars cut away in some shape, less worked on than the buildings below, but still rather nice. Several people stared at Bat as they passed, but he didn’t seem to notice. Much of anything, really. He seemed hyper focused on the ground several feet in front of him at any given moment. 

Tam eyed them all as they passed, putting a hand on Bat's shoulder.

The houses were smaller and more cramped here. Bat stopped in front of one. All the lights were still on, and the sound of raucous laughter and banging into things could be heard inside. 

Bat took a deep breath, not sure why he was hesitating.

After a second they separate. Jack walked up. “They have to go back inside now. But hopefully someday you join us.” The kids and jack went back inside leaving pyk and Asher alone. Well besides Cade and seraphina who were standing like 50 feet away arguing quietly.

The chaos inside momentarily paused. A shrill voice screamed "I'm not getting it!"  and then all the noise resumed. Bat smiled to himself. His mother would sigh, set her reading glasses aside, and---

He was mildly surprised when she actually opened the door. She hadn't bothered to take off her glasses, though. She'd just pushed them down her nose. She was slightly shorter than her son, just old enough for gray to begin tinging her hair, which was clearly supposed to be in a bun but had mostly escaped. They had the same eyes. 

"Oh, Bat," she said, sounding mildly happy to see him. "Come in. Who's this?"
