She raised an eyebrow.

“Put you in a frame. What would you think?”

She raised her other eyebrow and now looked surprised. Then she laughed and brought them down, nodding and shrugging. Why not?

He grinned and carried the paper to the office in both hands, half worried she’d slip out.

Tam had not known there was an office there.

She wouldn't fall out, though.

Bat wasn’t taking any chances.

He found a nice frame and carefully put the paper inside it.

“There. Now you’re perfectly safe!”

She grinned and appeared next to him again.

If only it were that simple.

He smiled at her and tucked the framed paper into his bag. “You hungry?”

She shook her head. Not really. Then she gestured questioningly to him.

He folded his arms and frowned. “I don’t understand you when you talk like that,” he informed her, and then felt bad for being stern.

She gave him a strange look.

Are . . . are you? she said quietly.

He blinked, not quite sure what she meant.

Oh.

Er- right.

. . . Hungry? she added.

“Oh— uh, I guess not. I just wanna make sure you’re okay.”

She nodded and smiled a little. She was okay.

He frowned. “This doesn’t mean we’re not talking about it,” he told her. “It just means it’ll be harder for you when the time comes because you’re not used to talking normally.”

She frowned, then sighed and glared at the floor.

It wasn't like she'd chosen to feel like this . . . talking had legitimately become difficult for some reason. But, well . . . she didn't really know how to explain it without using words, and that made the whole thing tricky.

It would go away though, and she would be able to talk normally again. She was sure of it.

Scuddit, this was rather frustrating.

“I’ll be right back,” he promised. “I just need to check something. Okay?”

She nodded and glared at the wall instead.

“Okay.”

He left through the front door Abe softly closed the door to the cabin, looking up at the clouds. He felt suddenly uneasy.

H- hello?

Ah

A soft breeze blew through his hair.

I… I don’t know if I should be asking this… it’s probably not fair. But… I was wondering if you could maybe…

Actually, maybe not.

How do I help her?

“Need dragon?”

“What’re you looking at, pretty boy?”

“Sorry,” Bat apologized. “You okay?”

He frowned at her. "Just thinking. What did you ever do with that Plotblade, anyway?" he said, changing the subject quickly.

Balitan shrugged, not a hint of malevolence in his expression. "Considering your nature, I thought you would know what Prismite can do. I suppose that's why you're researching the essences though." He put his spectacles back on and examined the phone-thing he'd created. "It is commonly known in scholarly circles that Prismite is the source of all Narration. Using Prismite, or Narrativium as it is known outside of scholarly circles, even a normal man like myself can Narrate."

Rebus’s eyes go wide. “Interesting… Narration itself messes up any attempts to learn about this on my own.  It’s a candle next to a roaring bonfire, and even if it self ignites, it’s hard to disregard sparks as a cause.” He pauses. “That was a weird metaphor. Regardless, I need to actually speak with a scholar to learn something, because I accidentally modify books to match what I know.”
