“He needs you more.” Maybe he always had.

Bat didn’t know much about who Cricket had been before. He just knew that he’d been on the run and that his life had been generally miserable.

He didn’t even know that about Gaioh. He was just gone. Bat had left him and now he was gone.

He turned to her. “We have to go back.”

“To live. If we didn’t… if we weren’t good enough.”

She was surprised at his sudden change of pace.

"Uh- okay. Let's go."

-

". . . Oh."

He didn't know.

"I hope so."

"Do you know what caused that shaking?"

"Wha- Bat, wait!"

She turned into a hummingbird and followed next to him.

What's wrong? Why the hurry?

-

"Maybe. That'd be kind of nice."

"What if they're dead, Tam? What if I left them alone and now they're all dead??"

He burst out into the clearing. Rose looked up at him, confused, and returned to sketching.

Relieved, Bat collapsed against a tree and hugged his knees.

You'll never be able to fix it.

He squeezed his eyes shut.

She shook her head and strode for the door. Before she got there, though, it burst open to reveal a man. His skin was a dark gray, his hair black with glimmering embers. He grinned, pointed white teeth peeking through his lips.

"Hello," he rasped.

Drin, formally known as The Scribe, appeared near the two, then addressed the one next to Atlas (am I right to assume it is Bacon?). “Hello! I am known as The Scribe!”

"Ah. The Scribe. That makes much more sense."

"Ah. The Scribe. That makes much more sense."

Bacon blinked, then became one.

Bacon conjured muskets and horses for the four of them.

"Where does he live? I'll go ask him if you're so afraid." Subversion smiled. "Beats sitting around here waiting for you to find a student to test on me."

The Ennuller gave her a look, then shook his head.

"Hm." Malevolence tapped his temple in thought. "If he isn't going to leave... that does pose an issue. Wind, do you know of anyone who might be able to help me and the rabbits in finding the lost page?"

"I do. Several, in fact, each of varying usefulness."

@SpiritOfWrath, did Onyx give Tull the quest to find the lost page, or did I just think I did?

Rebus sips his cider. “You made a mistake, there. Dramatic timing can be a problematic force.”

The palace erupted into flames. Ruia yelped and turned into dust.

He nodded, pulling out his list from earlier. He crossed out Gaioh’s name.

It would be best if he never thought about that again. He had to focus on the people he had left, or they’d all vanish too.

“Nothing new,” he replied, leaning back against the tree. The leaves looked so pretty— like gems, thin gems, filtering the light through.

He missed the light in the caverns. He’d considered going into the industry, chiseling lights, but he probably would have broken the Nullite tools.

But what if he hadn’t? Maybe he would have been happy, with no reason to break things. Or maybe he wouldn’t have been able to break those things.

He felt himself relax. Good, good. These thoughts were safe. Almost happy, even.

He hoped Gaioh was happy, wherever he was.

But-!

She made a frustrated noise and hopped in anxious little circles.

Then she sighed and sat down. She just felt defeated, and sad, and very . . .

And very . . .

. . . small.

She curled up into a little ball.

Let me know when you figure it out, she said quietly.

He blinked, suddenly feeling like he’d done something wrong. “Tam? I… I just…”

He carefully picked her up, making sure not to hurt her.

“I don’t know if I can stand to hurt like that,” he whispered.

“I… sometimes I don’t… sometimes I can’t think about things or I break down and start crying in front of everyone and break things and I’m absolutely sick of it and I’m not ever gonna do it again so I’ll think about it later just not right now because if I think about it now I’ll start crying and I don’t wanna have problems because you have enough to deal with— and Cricket, that is— and it’s okay, it really is, I’ll just think about it later and everything will be okay.”

He swallowed the lump in his throat and forced down the hot tears that suddenly really wanted to embarrass him further.

I . . . I'm sorry. You're not a burden, though, Bat. It's not a bad thing to . . . talk to us and let us help you. It's okay if you want to let go of things and express how you feel . . .

"Ah. Well, you picked the wrong time to do so." The rabbits began fanning out, surrounding the cloaked man. "I will of course accept your oath of fealty, but I would suggest you leave now unless you wish to be eaten by rabbits."

"Oh! Yes, of course." he said, bowing one final time, before disappearing.

"Oh, Bat . . . I'm sure you helped take him down still. You couldn't  have done nothing, right?"

She gave him a hug.

She glared at it.

The light bobbed rapidly, circling the sword, and briefly transforming into for emphasis.

She scoffed. "Dead? Or out here?"

He shrunk in on himself in her arms. "Cricket had to protect me. He got hurt because of me... maybe twice. I don't remember."

"Bat... that's unfair to yourself. In the end, you're a better person, in every way."

Cricket sighed, and started into the woods. He needed to think.
