The Rebus clone raises an eyebrow. “Who has it? Regardless, summoning the Witherlord will be detrimental to my long term goals. I’ve heard what happened to the Luxsprites.”

"No one has it. It is lost."

Rebus grits his teeth. “Why would I even need it, if I know what it says and don’t intend to follow its instructions? The Witherlord’s primary goal is to destroy the Thread, which I would very much like to prevent from happening.”

"It's okay, buddy. Let it all out."

He broke down into sobs. “Nobody loves me!”

She sighed, then smiled a little.

"What's wrong?"

She would have laughed if she hadn't been so worried.

She watched this all with interest.

Bat reorganized his bag again, glad to see that he hadn’t lost anything at all.

The ennuller sighed. Fine, if it's the only think that will convince you... but did you even consider asking for help?

Bat frowned. He wasn’t sure that would have been the best idea, given Tam’s aversion.

“I don’t know… it’s just being here, it brings up old memories, bad memories.”

Cricket paused. “Maybe not, but Stone was about to kill both of them unless I came! And… it’s up to Tam if you can join us.”

“Bad memories?” Bat asked. “Of which kind?”

“The worst.” he said, wiping his eye. “I came here after…” his voice broke. “after I first killed a man. After the first time I lost control.”

“Oh,” Bat said. “After the first time the enforcers came after… us?”

He’d kind of been traveling with them.

“Or was it before that?” Bat asked.

Sagerian nods. “I’ve noticed the same. There aren’t enough people, and those that are here are too quiet. I should find out why.”

“This place has always just been… quiet.”

The Constant shrugged slightly, but dropped his glass, shattering it. Sighing, he picked it up. However, one of the shards cut him, releasing blood that, strangely, evaporated directly after it was released.

“Or was it before that?” Bat asked.

“Before. I was barely fifteen, and… there was a criminal who found me one night, when I was starving and took me to his house. I thought he was a good man. He wasn’t. He put some sort of gadget on me that restricts my powers and decided to train me as his “apprentice.” That man taught me how to use my knives, taught me to steal. A year later, after being told to kill someone, I wanted out. He wouldn’t let me… and there was a fight. I killed him, and several others. That day I showed myself I was a monster.”

He took a trembling breath, then closed his eyes, trying to control his emotion.

The ennuller shook his head. No. If you aren't going to return to the Silent Halls, then I'm coming with you.

“Fine.” Cricket said, distracted, putting his head in his hands. “What’s your name anyway?”

Sagerian doesn’t write it down just then, as that would be rude, but he commits the strange phenomenon to memory.

Rebus gives the wind a flat stare. “My goal doesn’t have to be the preservation of the reality I live in? That is a necessary sub-goal for almost every possible desire!”

“Do you want a shell?” He pulled out a tiny little conch.

Bat felt a little better after giving him that.

“Oh! We were gonna test your blood,” he remembered. “Rax. I’ll get a sample after dinner, unless it’s feeling a lot worse now.”
