Pheonix released Star, blushing slightly. "It sounds like he's looking for a peaceful resolution, which is good." He grinned. "Maybe he's finally seen the wisdom of submitting to you."

Star cocked her head. "What are you doing?"

The sky above opened, bathing the fields of gray grass in white. “The void gives me power over space and time. I can reach between realms—reach out to people.”

A beam of light shot down in the center of the field. When it dispersed, a single figure stood there.

A man.

The man raised his head and looked at his surroundings. “Where am I?”

”Back from the Beyond,” Jaywalk whispered.

“Star, this is an act of mercy. I’m sorry for everything I’ve done to you.” He turned, walking back to his throne.

”You may approach.”

No, Star thought. I could have turned back time and brought him back. But I didn't. I didn't because he deserves his rest. She stepped toward Marsh anyway. Spikeless and perfect. She smiled "Hey," she muttered, tears forming in her blue eyes. She felt crushingly unworthy.

This isn't permanent, is it?

She’s not the only one who needs this. Jaywalk reached out into the world, gathering all the ones closest to Marsh. Rose, Granite, and Kelsier.

He had another surprise in store for Jasnah and Max.

A young girl rose up behind Marsh. “Uncle?” she asked. “Where are we?”

Star hugged Marsh. "I'm so, so, so sorry," she said.

Narrator Pheonix's heart began to sink slowly as he watched the pair. He lowered his head and stared at the floor.

Hand in hand, Kelsier and Jasnah walked forward as well. “Daughter,” Jasnah said.

Edna turned. “Mother!”

The sounds of joyous reunions reached Pheonix's ears, but he heard nothing.

I thought... I thought I had a chance.

But he had been wrong. His master had been right. He shouldn't have tried to involve himself in the Narrative. He shouldn't have made himself a character. It had led to disaster in Queen of Shadows, and it had led to disaster here.

Marsh felt a hug around his leg. “Daddy,” Rose cried, Granite standing behind her. “Daddy and Mommy are happy!”

Pheonix felt his heart begin to crack. He could stop it, he knew. He should stop it.

And yet, he didn't. He couldn't let go of his feelings. Not yet.

The tears began to fall from Marsh’s eyes. “I know,” he said, pulling her close.

"You have to go," Star said. "I'm going to miss you. But I think it's okay now. We'll be alright. All of us." She let go of him and looked over at Pheonix, staring at the floor. She would have to do something about that later.

Pheonix hung in the balance. He was close. So close to erasing his feelings and stepping back.

But then he realized; it wasn't permanent. Marsh wouldn't stay. He still had a chance.

So why did he still feel so cold?
