what time of day is it?

Evening.

"Perfect!" said Selene. "Follow me, please!"

She moved off down the street, moving quickly, shooting a glance back every so often to make sure Bacon and Erryin were still following.

After several turns, the party arrived at a rather sturdy-looking building with a wooden sign proudly proclaiming it to be the "ROUGH STONE INN". Selene pushed the door open and called inside. "Father! Customers!"

"I've designed a titanium alloy for the purpose." Malevolence examined the room, then nodded and muttered a voice command under his breath. With a flash of lightning, several construction robots appeared and began setting up lights. "I suppose I could source it, although it would be easier if I could just give you the specifications and allow you to Narrate the surrounding rock into the proper metal."

He paused, then leaned a little closer to Sequence. "I have taken the liberty of installing an investigative network of drones around you planet for early warning purposes, so let me tell you this: Rebus is a madman and a fool if he thinks anyone can control the power of the Mantle. You know firsthand the corruptive power even a regular withergeist holds. So far as I know, not a single host of the Mantle has done anything aside from working to destroy all creation." He took a deep breath, adjusting his cloak slightly. "And please believe me when I say this, I want to rule TLT. Not destroy it. The power of the Witherlord would be incredible to hold, but I hold no illusions about what I would do if I were to take it up."

Sequence blinked at him a few times, processing his somewhat alarming words. She decided it was okay for the moment, and clasped her hands together with a smile.

”Splendid! I could certainly do so, if you tell me a bit about the metal. I am a Narrator after all! I Narrate things… I like to think I’m rather good at it.”

”The surveillance network is… Perhaps a tad unnecessary, as I know about everything that goes on in this world at all times, but one can never be too careful I suppose.”

As the pair entered the inn, the rich scent of cooking meat washed over them.

At the bar, a burly man was cleaning glasses. He looked up as Selene called out.

"Greetings, travelers," he boomed. "I take it you are here for rooms?"

He nodded. “Yep. Yep. I’m um… I’m not doing well. Yep.”

Small Strands of glowing yellow, exited his chest, and, with a struggle, re-entered them. “My um… my friend died. That’s bad. Yep.”

He sneezed, erupting in Strands that destroyed everything within a two foot radius. “Well crap. I’ve gotta keep that in check. Can’t be overly mad. Yep.”

Atreides smiled. Symbol. That was . . . interesting, to say the least. Leverage? It could work, but it could also bring down the full wrath of the Antagonist upon himself.

"No. It's strange, really. Why do they struggle? You've subjugated most of the Thread, and yet few are willing. They harbor resentment."

Rebus noticed, and wished to note that Atredies was allegedly working for him. Of course, trying to blackmail an employer was a suitably villainous thing to do - especially if the same tendencies could be applied to useful work and Rebus was fairly certain the actually scheming could be thwarted.
“That would be for two reasons, both of them metafictional. Firstly, the Authors want to write stories on their own terms, which means few of them want to have their characters become random civilians in my empire. Secondly, nearly every important character in the Thread has interacted with a Narrator and hence knows I’m evil.”

On 8/31/2025 at 11:21 AM, Hawks said:

"i understand." They said softly. "That feeling when you would kill everyone just to save one person."

Mwuahahha

Rebus glanced down at the Nullite-infused vines that were - if Heir recalled correctly - still binding him. “Do you wish to free me because of your newfound empathy for my position, or are you planning to keep me here indefinitely?”

But why not an impact for good—one that will truly last through the ages.

Supply and demand. There were plenty of heroes, but almost no villains that existed for more than the time it took a heroic character to find and obliterate them. People remember the Witherlord, the killing of Plot, and all the other epic villains of the Thread far better than any former heroes.

God Killer turned around. "I am a Killer of Gods. As you can see, it has become my identity. So, when I ascended, I was... afraid. I had become the thing I wanted to destroy. I, and I see now hastily, gave it away to seek my truth. They were always temporary holders of The Dragon Fanatic, which holds the powers of an Avatar. These people had power. They squandered it, not me. I might have made a mistake giving it to them, but I was not the one who had to be shackled in order to prevent immense destruction." He paused, then turned to Rebus. "And don't think I don't know about you. One who wishes to summon a God. This Witherlord. One who wishes to become the god of this thread." He turned back around. "Dear Rebus, as long as you wish to be a god, you will find me on the other side of this battlefield." He paused. "I might not know your motivations, but your actions reek of godhood so." He starts to leave.

“I’ve killed a couple gods myself. How do you know I don’t wish to bring the downfall of the Witherlord by causing it - through me - to wield Antagonist and be doomed to eventual failure?”

Any alternative,” She said, her voice raw. She leaned heavily on her cane again as she was overwhelmed by a particularly nasty fit of coughing.

”… Choosing… To try to undertake that mantle…” She said as the coughing died down. “Tells me that you don’t have that self-control. I’m sorry Rebus, but… I’m really not sorry. You can’t be allowed to have that paper.”

Rebus smiled. “Would Conflict, then, be a sufficient substitute in your eyes? And I did not choose this - it was the price of a deal I made to save someone I love.”

Bacon choked. "Uh... excuse me, what do you mean by self-control?"

Bacon stared at Rebus for a long moment.

"You're serious?" he said. "Well, $#!*"

“Have you ever had a conversation with a Withergiest, Bacon? The Witherlord can wait and plan, and that’s enough for it to be manipulated.” Rebus smiled knowingly, though most sane people who couldn’t read his mind would strongly contest the idea he knew what he was getting into. “And I am always serious, or at least truthful.”

Rain began to pour. Bolts of lightning struck and booms of thunder sounded, while Venom died off to the side, finally rolling to a stop, legs curled above.

Betrayal froze, but strengthened his resolve, free hand forming a fist.

“Perhaps not. However, I would not be able live with myself had I not attempted to stop this.”

The pattering of rain could be heard from his jet black armor. Light glimmered off the rain on his sword when the lightning struck.

”I know you will win. But I plead to all that may be listening.”

He glanced to the sky

”This monster must be brought down. My death may be in vain, but I will die knowing I fought that which must fall”

He raised his sword and charged, footfalls muted slightly by the rain.

Rebus waved a hand and a rush of utility fog slammed into Betrayal, throwing him backwards. “Am I a monster? Would you not have done this to any who undertook these trials, even a child as innocent as the one you condemned me for killing?”

The Priest's mouth fell open. "...Truly? You... actually... agree? You'll change your ways?" He closed his mouth with a snap. "That is... unexpected. Is this some sort of trick?"

“Probably,” said the man who looked like Rebus. “For instance, the last thirty seconds or so of my memory are blank.  But if you’ll give me a chance to atone, I’d accept.”

As I understand it, the Thread will revolve - even more so than before - around Rebus and whoever holds Protagonist.

No reason to apologize! There's plenty of characters from other books and stories in TLT, or at least there used to be.

And why would you think I wished to return him? I've said nothing to indicate that. The voice chuckled. I merely asked if an Author would wish to be one of three. Hardly a suspicious question.

Yeah
