Her eyes went wide for a moment, a pang of sadness shooting through her chest. Then she snorted.

"Goodness, no- we- we never dated," she laughed.

Ah, alright. Thanks.

Tears prickled at the the corners of her eyes.

"Yeah. Um . . . I'm just- I'll just be right back."

The second continued to flee while the first harried her with telescoping spears or solid waves of utility fog. Rebus imprisoned a construct in a sphere of utility fog, then caught up to it while it was blasting its way out.
“I don’t know when it started; I hadn’t been around Nullite devices for a while.”
“It utilizes omnion conduction fields to invoke forceful translocality, compensating for the shunting with expansion of telekinetic membranes, ignoring relativity through ansible tachyons to transmit quala structure to a specialized retriever which can itself be translocated into place with relevant dimensional coordinates, using antimatter to power the translocal shift,  a jargon coordinator to account for complications and momentum cancellation, with metaphysical enabling of destinations, nanoscale machinery, predictive selection, and proprietary techniques.” Rebus grinned at Nemesis’s presumably stunned look. “If you want to know how it is operated, simply hit the button to go where you want, as long as there’s another node. It has a verbal interface if there are complications.”

She could feel something deeper beyond the power it shoved into her. An impression of a deep, underlying truth or reality that somehow brought to mind Ruia, Lady Bug, Beosta, her family, and Lytikyria herself.

He jumped and another ball went awry.

“Scuddit,” he muttered. “Hi.”

They flew for a while before reaching a forest. The trees grew gradually bigger and bigger until they could be seen at cloud level, blocking out half the sky. A fire raged somewhere far below.

The birds gently set the two humans on a flat, smoothed down platform of wood, far enough from any edges that they should be safe. The area would be perilous for them, though. Clearly they flew as much as walked, as evidenced by the steep slopes that feathered people slid down as if surfing, the tangled and uneven skinny walkways, and the lack of handrails anywhere.

“I’m guessing they’re merely important to Lytikyria… perhaps she’s endowed them with their power.”

Also plausible. It makes sense for you and herself . . . we should check the others. Maybe they'll have similar energy spikes to the objects?

It wasn't stunned--- just confused in a stupid and kind of adorable way. "Oh. Cool, thanks."

The first construct proceeded to run, bounding across what was indeed a trampoline. Evidently they shared a decision loop; Rebus had used the same tactics to once again corner one, leaving only three remaining.

"I don't know. You probably don't want to pick me."

Rebus found that amusing, though the man would be at best a lieutenant - they did not seem to be on the same level. "I have a potential list of targets for you - how do you acquire souls, and what can you do with them?"

He put the stick back. She didn’t need to know how bad he—

She probably already did. Scud it. He shoved a chair in his way with a little more vehemence than was necessary. Scud you, scud her— scud everything!
-

“She’ll be out for—“ his bird began, having changed back into a human with tanned skin and dark brown feathers, but the black-feathered bird changed as well.

“Don’t speak,” she said sharply, then stalked off down the branch. He squeaked and went quiet, moving to a sort of guard position to block them from the branch.

Symbol had, by this point, made many mental notes of items to gather and areas in which to improve. The trampoline provided another item of interest. She stepped on timidly, recalling how the construct had behaved on it physics-wise, and took a couple seconds to acclimate. After that, though, she used it to bound after the construct very efficiently and stab down from above.

-

“Probably not.” Rose hesitated. “Do you know how Bat breaks things? What he does?”

-

“It takes a ritual with fire. I collect them in these.” He lifted strings of glass beads off his chest. “I use them to power my teleportation, super strength, flight… though I’m experimenting with contracts to I can use their individual powers directly.” He pointed at Keys.
