The next morning, the boys’ respective maids came to collect them for breakfast. They knocked on the doors of their bedrooms.

Orchid flew out of her drawer, got big, and answered the door.

Thanks for the description! See you tomorrow 😁

Nemesis tilted his head, then looked up at the sky. “A rest?”

-

Symbol summoned Beginnings and parried, twisting behind and to the left. She pulled her sword from the parry and stabbed at the construct.

Do the constructs’ blades have cross guards or anything?
-

“And fire. I harvest fire too!”

“Yeah. You have to come with me now or something.”
The red ones did, the green don’t.
A shield of green utility fog stopped the strike, though the Plotblade did punch through it. The construct leapt backwards, the shield blasting apart into a brief smokescreen.
Did you miss the vision part?
“Interesting… I may sponsor you, actually.”

“Uh…” he glanced at the sky again. “Sorry. No time.”

Symbol stepped back from the fog and waited until she could see the construct again. Then she sprang, dismissing the Plotblade and hauling herself up onto a thin walkway to her left to chase the construct from above.

Rose frowned. “Portal… cuts?”

-

“Oooh! Sponsor?”

Rebus, who had never left, shrugged. "Utility is telling the truth, though not all of it. I shall do the same - in fact, true lies are very bad for me. I began this for three reasons: I refuse to let Malevolence beat me, the Thread is overflowing with love plotlines and on-off villains that get killed after like ten pages, and my own self preservation, both because I need to be interesting, and because I live in the universe and would rather it not be conquered or stagnant. What I need to become is not necessarily a villain, but rather an antagonist. Admittedly, I'm probably also some manner of sociopath, but I've been taking steps to minimize actual harm while being all the more threatening and evil because of it." He smiled sweetly.

"Uhhh . . . wait, what?"

Jack was bewildered. “Well, I do hope you get your soul returned.”

The construct had bolted during the brief confusion, leaping between several elevated platforms at a diagonal to her. Meanwhile, Rebus had cornered a construct and killed it - evidentially they were fairly unskilled in melee.
“Yes. The portals that Cricket makes, if something is halfway through them when they close, can cut through nearly anything.”
“Yes. I would provide you resources and direction in exchange for you taking out some immortals I don’t like, not harming my allies unless I tell you you can, and me getting partial credit for enabling your actions.”

"Yeah. Malan mentioned it once or twice, talking to his friends."

There wasn’t.

The ice cream was gone too.

Aden looked up from the tub of ice cream, looking guilty.

-

No, wait, shush! You’re not supposed to do that!

“If you’re really as smart as I am, you should speak up more.” She rolled another small glass sphere and frowned at the resulting metal one. “Why do you think it was encased like this?”

She snorted and threw the tub away.

"You're going to make yourself sick," she laughed.

He grinned.

Why?

Spoiler

She rolled her eyes and focused on the metal pod.

Not sure. Could it be for protection of some sort? That wouldn't make much sense, though . . . do you know of any possible motives she could have for sectioning off her power like this? If that is what this is.

She thought for a moment.

Open another one.

“Huh? Oh, I never had one!”

She copied a gesture she’d seen earlier and launched herself with a pillar of utility fog, wincing against the jarring sensation in her legs. She’d have to try that again.

Stabbing downward, she landed almost on top of the construct, wincing against

She cracked open the one she’d brought. It was a small wooden box.

You said the last one seemed like it had some of her power? What about this one?

“I was speaking to her, actually.”
The construct tried to sidestep, took the hit, then tumbled off its platform and to the ground.

Which one’s the normal one? The one with no tattoos, or the Nullite one?
“I don’t know whom your nemeses are. I would doubt it.”

Nullite
