Her fingers found something—a ledge or a crack of some sort. She traced it down below the water, then took a deep breath and disappeared under the surface. Several moments passed. Long, long moments.

After almost two minutes, Corysande resurfaced and gasped for air. She stumbled back, almost plunging under the water again, but she stumbled back against Holt instead. She clutched his arm. 

The wall rumbled loudly, and the cave began to tremble.

Rebus smiled. "Excellent. Your Author does make things more interesting - it nearly killed me when she disappeared, actually." They were in a small room, now, shiny chrome and effectively featureless.

He looped his arms under hers and held her there until she could stand on her own.

"You s-sure?" he asked, teeth chattering. "Are you very cold or dizzy or anything?"
