As they crested the final part of the mountain, an sprawling city cam into view. Buildings of stone, gold, silver, marble, and all sorts of other precious materials filled the mountaintop, which seemed to defy its previous size. All kinds of people walked the streets; magical folk, monsters, even some humans.

An enormous marble palace stretched into the sky at the center of it all.

Holt gaped.

Bat was there. He stared at the huge dam above them with wide, fascinated eyes. Rose and her friends were eyeing him, whispering among themselves.

Rose approached with her gaggle. 

"Don't look at that," she ordered him. 

Bat turned to her, confused. "Huh?" 

"You'll break it!" 

Her gaggle snickered, and she grinned. Bat's shoulders lifted defensively, and he turned away. 

"What, you want it to break? Of course you would." 

Bat didn't respond, but Rose's gaggle giggled. Rose leaned forward slightly, looking eager and almost hopeful. 

Nothing happened.

Cricket stiffened slightly. Rose was suffering too. he thought to himself. It's not her fault she's a jerk. She's just following the example her parents have given.

They finally arrived at the opulent palace. She led them inside without hesitation, then signaled the announcer and took her place on a stool by the burning hearth.

The circle flashed, solidifying into a simple braided choker. "And you will never allow this circlet to be removed." 

My apologies - my weekend consisted of a bunch of family and scout events I didn’t realize were happening, plus writers block (though we get to write science fiction for a school assignment, so that’s nice). 
The reflection tilted her head to the side.“Probably… that does look like it might hurt.” It did. The various problems in the mirrors were getting worse. The ink-bird somehow tore her tattoo ink from her body. In the fighting mirror, she lifted her absurdly dangerous flashlight, and the mirror was suddenly consumed in blinding light. In the next mirror over, the darkness fully enveloped her, just as rock went over her head in another. A bolt of Ennulling energy hit the blank-faced reflection, the disintegrating one was left as a pile of ash, and the final mirror was left as an incomprehensible distortion. 
Rebus smiled, briefly going over the contract to ensure there weren’t any loopholes. He came up with a few inconsistencies, mainly involving the definitions of weapon, take, and violence, but decided that it was mostly sound. It also gave him a few ideas… “I have no objections to this contract, aside from one thing: you will not directly or indirectly Narrate away the binding of the contract, nor allow another to do so.”

There was a dull, deep thunk. Bat gasped and stepped back. The whole class froze.

The dam began to lower. Water poured down into the reservoir beneath. The banks were assailed by waves, bigger and bigger. 

"Everyone in the bus!" The teacher bellowed. 

Rose's face turned pale, and she couldn't tear her eyes away from the dam. Deep in the fear was... a little bit of wonder. 

She'd done that.

"Ah! That's a good catch," Symbol said. 

Lady Bug sighed. "Fine. Let's get it over with." 

Symbol smiled and floated the choker towards her. Lady Bug clasped it on, and it flashed with golden light. 

Then she vanished, and was gone. 

"Perfect. Thank you," Symbol told Rebus.

she pressed Bat into doing it, and so she sees it as her fault 

Rose grabbed Bat and dragged him toward the bus. Bat didn't seem to notice. 

The scene wavered and faded into a council room. Rose sat on the council, looking out of place around the circular table full of adults.
