Cricket hesitated, standing there for a moment, before walking through. If this had something to do with Rose . . . it was worth exploring.

He emerged in a dark, cobwebby room. 

Rose stood by a dusty window. Well, leaned on it. She looked several years younger, maybe sixteen or seventeen. She drummed her fingers nervously on the windowsill.

She turned, feet scuffling the dirt on the floor as her dull eyes and slightly rounded features came into view. “Already?” 

Her gaze went right through him to a woman at the doorway he could recognize as her mother.

”Yes. Already.”

Silently, she followed her mother out of the dusty, quiet, peaceful attic.

He stepped through the door into a cave with lanterns hanging from the walls. Rose was even younger in this one, though it took a moment to pick her out of the crowd of kids— well, middle scholars.
