“Thank you.”

[Three, two, one!]

The world shifted around them, and they appeared somewhere new.

Somewhere cold.

Their mechs had thankfully activated in the Shift, because they appeared in the middle of space.

Asher squirmed trying to figure out what's happening. "Where? What? We are foatiiinggg"

Pyk was still panicking. “Something prevented the Shift. The only thing that could do that, though… is the Strands…”

He squinted at the area around them. There wasn’t anything in sight.

Asher was still spinning around. She had somehow managed to get herself spinning around in like a cartwheel. "Uhhh where are we? Why is it so dark here?"

“Oh, yes.”

The box clearly had plenty of Nullite components. Random other devices were scattered everywhere as well.

”I made that clock over there, too! See, the hands spell our last name at nine fifteen!”

The clock had strange swirly shapes on the face, and the hands were strange swirly shapes.

“Sometimes I think he's crazy,” Bat told her. “One day he’ll be working on a propulsion engine or something, and the next day he’ll be putting together a singing telegram.”

”I’m technically an engineer for the government. But they don’t need much engineering done unless things get broken.”

"Cool."

He says the government- are there other caverns besides yours, with other people? she asked Bat.

He hesitated, looking uncomfortable. Yeah there are please don’t think about it please.

“Dinner,” Mrs. Whitlock yelled.

Mr. Whitlock grumbled something, but went to go eat.

“You hungry?”

“We… we are in the space between planets.”

He twisted. “I think I know a place we can go, if it’s still functional.”

She nodded. Ah, right, sorry. I won't.

"I guess I am . . ." Is there ever any Nullite floating through the air in this area?

"good cause im getting dizzy." She said drifting a bit farther off. Still spinning.

He activated his boosters, catching her wrist. They shifted again, and this time they appeared in a busy city street.

Pyk sighed in relief. “We’re here. We’ll have to enlist the help of the local government.”

He grimaced. “They… they don’t like me very much.”

He said it with a small vestige of shame.

”Cool! I uhhhh… not really.”

“Huh. I get really hungry sometimes. But I won’t eat you!” The thing-in-the-darkness (I don’t remember the name you gave it) smiled, though a human would not identify its expression as such.

32 minutes ago, Halcyon The Only said:

“Mmm… how would we go about that?”

“Well, we’d have to threaten more people. Protagonists often have personal stakes, but the conflict often threatens their community as well. And I now have the coordinates to the caverns.” He teleported them nearby the entrance, though outside the area he’d surveil if he had been in charge. Thus, the two of them were in for several miles of transportation. “We can timeskip this, of course. When we get there, we should at least start nonthreatening. They should be to difficult to find, but I could likely find them even without a trail - if I come trying to trade advanced technology for Nullite technology, they will probably buy that I found them on my own. The rest of my plan probably shouldn’t be said out loud - storytelling comes with restrictions, unfortunately.”

Not probably. It’s the industrial areas you’ll hafta look out for.

They returned to the main hall, then the dining room. Three of Bat’s siblings squirmed in their chairs.

“Where’s Moss?”

“at the University library for her test. If she does well, she might be able to live on campus next semester.”

“Aw. Tell her I said hi.”

Mrs. Whitlock nodded, serving a dish that looked like ham, cheese, and mushroom casserole. Or something like that. “River! RIVER!”

A kid walked slowly into the room, buried in a book. He had glasses like his father , but his air was red like his mother’s. “Coming,” he said absently, then tripped on the cord of the broken lamp and stumbled into the table, losing the book in the process.

Just looked it up - was Whan.

Tel was a bit more than a human. He smiled back. “Thanks!”

“It comes with the territory.” Rebus constructs a hovercart, stepping into it.  “Actually, if we avoid a timeskip we can have a conversation or too. After all, we don’t want the storylines to intersect.”

Whan smiled more, not questioning the fact that Tel could see through the darkness.

He’s just ignoring the fact that he blames himself for… other stuff.

Looking over the crowd, he frowned, then waved a taxi over.

”This is we’ll get around, for now.”

Kintlen is the corrupt leader of the Pact.

Pyk nods. “That’s actually a pretty accurate assessment of what it is.”

He enters the car, offering a hand to Asher. “Hundred Nation Embassy, please.”

Symbol stepped up with him.

“I’d say avoiding a timeskip would be preferable, particularly as I have some things to say. I would like to be, if not a partner in whatever you’re planning, an assistant.”

He smiled gratefully and began eating, again poring over the book. “Nerd,” Bat teased.

“Giant.”

“Not my fault you’re short.”

”Not my fault you’re illiterate.”

Bat chuckled and started eating as well.
