She sighed and flopped to the ground.

"Didn't work," she muttered.

"Around the- how long have you been here?"

He stared at her for a good several seconds.

“I have to go,” he choked, then stumbled into the trees.

She shrugged, then pointed back in the distance. “You see that flag? The blue one?”

Drin nodded very seriously. "And once my Author is done with his homework - not his essay, he thankfully did finish that - I can joke again!"

"Wait, Bat, no . . ."

He looked in the direction she was pointing.

"Yeah?"

He didn’t really hear her.

At least Rose will be happy.

Gaioh hadn’t… he didn’t deserve that. He’d done nothing. He hadn’t even had any friends…

He felt awful. Guilt pressed down on him so hard he felt like maybe just flopping over.

“That’s the fifth one I’ve planted. Horizon to horizon. I like to keep track.”

Tam fell into step beside him.

"Bat?"

". . . Wow."

“Tam.”

“I impress myself too.”

“Five. Only five. I’ll make it around the world someday, though.”

“It’s light out.”

She nodded.

“So what about you, squirt? Why are you waiting?”

“In the short term, networking,” she replied. “The more people trust and respect me, the more people I’ll be able to unite. To be honest, I’m not sure what’s coming. Something… dark. I feel it all the time, and it’s impossible to know…” she trailed off.

"Have you considered the possibility that you're just crazy and there is no threat?"

The Ennuller blinked. I mean... I'm not sure. But he's... he's the former Witherlord! There are just some things you just don't do.

"Where does he live? I'll go ask him if you're so afraid." Subversion smiled. "Beats sitting around here waiting for you to find a student to test on me."

"If nothing changes, no."

"Hm." Malevolence tapped his temple in thought. "If he isn't going to leave... that does pose an issue. Wind, do you know of anyone who might be able to help me and the rabbits in finding the lost page?"

Ah. Okay.

He shrugged. "I guess . . . I guess I shouldn't wait for my family, so . . ."

He looked in the direction of the waterfall.

"I don't really know."

“I don’t know.”

Something was missing. Nobody should die under a bright sky that just kept on being bright.

Nobody should die alone, unloved, friendless…

He almost choked on his own emotion, then kept walking.

“I’ll come,” Gaioh offered.

Unintelligible immediately drew both of his revolvers, levelling them both at Ruia. "What is this?"

"Bat? Will you tell me what's going on, please?"

The boy nodded to him. "That would be nice. Thank you."

He nodded to Yrissia as well. "And . . . and thank you, as well."

“You should go back with Cricket. He probably feels alone.”

I don’t want him to be alone.

“What do you think’s on the other side?”

“Me too.”

After a minute, he added, “Do you think we’ll get a second chance?”

“He needs you more.” Maybe he always had.

Bat didn’t know much about who Cricket had been before. He just knew that he’d been on the run and that his life had been generally miserable.

He didn’t even know that about Gaioh. He was just gone. Bat had left him and now he was gone.

He turned to her. “We have to go back.”

“To live. If we didn’t… if we weren’t good enough.”
